REFLECTIONS ON THE SENIOR CAMPUS
‘...It’s not just about the art, it’s about the hands that draw the pictures and play the
music, turn the pages and write the essays. The hands that transform themselves when
their on stage, who save their owners when they can’t think of a single thing to say. The
hands that shake one another, that are placed on a back in need of comforting and raise
friends up high in the air when they are too low to raise themselves. The hands that reach
out to those in need and to those we are yet to understand.
Intrinsic with our experience of Sandy every single day is our connection to the real world.
As Global Politics students we can both attest to the fact that we engaged with the world so
far beyond our own experience. Flinging ourselves into classrooms without so much as
hello and emphatically exclaiming ‘did you watch Q and A last night?’ ; cue: excited nods,
cries of approval, counter-cries of disapproval and, inevitably, spirited debate.
The fresh newspapers meticulously laid out in the Library every morning end their lives
crumpled, read and reread by students, not because we feel we have to, but because we’ve
had a hunger entrenched in us from day one, a thirst to know and understand experiences
different from our own; from people our age affected by the catastrophic floods of last year
or the Libyan, Egyptian and Tunisian versions of ourselves overthrowing dictators. Every
student in this room knows no news isn’t good news, it is missing news, and is not only wellequipped to stand up for themselves, but also to stand up for others. Our power comes
from our ears and our mouths as we listen to everything and then sing it from the rooftops,
even when it isn’t easy.’
Jessie Matheson and Tom Allen
ALUMNI
Introducing just a few of
our former high achievers.
HARRISON CRAIG - Recording Artist
Harrison attended the College from 2007-2012. A Performing
Arts student Harrison enjoyed his Music studies at the college.
He shined in College Productions with leading roles in Return
to the Forbidden Planet, Pirates of Penzance and Bye Bye
Birdie. Harrison performed at College Music and Dance
Nights and on the Out n’ Back Music Tours. He was a soloist
at the State Schools Spectacular for his final two years of
school. Winning ‘The Voice’ in 2013 is testimony to his talent!
GRACE HOLLANDS - 6th Yr Medicine Monash University
Grace attended the College from 2005-2008. Grace has now
started her sixth year of medicine at Monash University. Whilst
Grace enjoys all aspects of medicine she is hoping to specialise
in Emergency medicine. Last year Grace completed an optional
Honours Research year focusing on Indigenous Women’s
Health. Grace has enjoyed the work that she has done in the
hospitals around Victoria and this year will work in five
different hospitals during this her final year.
CHELSEY (NASH) TREGEAR - Podiatrist and former
Vice-Captain of the Vixens
Chelsey attended the College from 1996-2001. As a member of
the Science Program, Chelsey’s pathway of choice was to
become a podiatrist, an occupation that she very much loves.
Her other passion is Netball where she has been equally
successful as the former Captain of the Vixens. Chelsey is one
of the Patrons of our Sports Academy and is currently very
much enjoying motherhood.
GUY STAYNER - ABC 7.30 Report Friday Night Host
Guy attended the College from 1980-1985. As a very talented
English student and performer on the stage as an actor and
singer, it was easy to understand why Guy entered Journalism.
Guy comments on, ‘..the variety of places I travel to and the
many weird and interesting characters I meet to do my job is
wonderful. Travelling to the Beijing Olympics and the 2010
FIFA World Cup in South Africa were particular highlights.’
