The rent man knocked.
He said, Howdy-do?
I said, What
Can I do for you?
He said, You know
Your rent is due.
I said, Listen
Before I'd pay
I'd go to Hades
And rot away.
The sink is broke,
The water don't run,
And you ain't done a thing
You promised to've done.
Back window's cracked,
Kitchen floor squeaks,

It's not up to me.

If it's money you want,

Summary
This poem is about a conversation between a woman and
the agent who has come to collect rent for her landlord.
The woman refuses to pay, saying that the sink is broken,
the water isn't running, and the landlord hasn't done
anything he promised. The agent says he is not pleased,
and she says she isn't either, and that they therefore
agree.
The poem highlights the plight of those to poor to pay rent;
the woman is portrayed as a woman of conviction rather than as a groveling poor woman; she tells
the agent that she will not pay, not because she is poor, but because he has not fulfilled his end of
the contract.
