HCV 1 (SPECIES DIVERSITY) Definition from Malaysia National

HCV 1 (SPECIES DIVERSITY)
Definition from Malaysia National Toolkit (2009): Concentrations of biological diversity
including endemic species, and rare, threatened or endangered species, that is significant at
global, regional or national levels.
HCV 1.2: THREATENED AND ENDANGERED SPECIES
As mentioned in the Toolkit: “Any species categorized as either Critically Endangered (CR),
Endangered (EN) or Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, Appendix I of CITES or listed
as protected under Malaysian legislation (federal or state), is HCV 1.2. However, for practical
reasons forest managers may want to limit field surveys of fauna to mammals (particularly
large ones, over 20kg in weight), birds and herpetofauna, unless literature indicates that there
are other species in the area which require specific attention. This does not mean that other
taxa are unimportant, and wherever possible, if the expertise and survey protocols are
available there should be covered too. It is also recommended to cross check the IUCN Red
list with the Malaysian Red Data Book, once that is available. Where there may be difference
between the Malaysian Red Data Book and the IUCN Red List, the Malaysian Red Data
Book should always take precedence.”

Actions
The USM SFMP area constitute part of largest remaining Malaysian
non-fragmented forested block in Sabah (Yayasan Sabah
concession), which if managed conscientiously, will pay a major role
in harboring the highest numbers of large Bornean mammals. This
area is an important refuge for key wildlife species such as the
Sumatran rhinoceros, Bornean pygmy elephant, tembadau, sun bear,
clouded leopard, bay cat and other endangered species. The USM
SFMP is a critical habitat of 56 terrestrial species mammals (23
species were classified as threatened and 33 species were classified
low risk under IUCN red list), and 174 bird species (10 species
classified as threatened, 54 species near threatened and 112 species
least concern)
 Establish/Enhance a long term monitoring system for fauna
diversity
 Field staff is required to go for wildlife monitoring training to
enhance their skills and knowledge
 Collaboration with wildlife experts to enhance the current
monitoring system
 Continuous monitoring program for critical endangered species
 Periodic survey for threatened species
 Aerial nest counting for orang-utan executed once in 5 years
 Regular wildlife survey at designated areas i.e. Malua and Bukit
Piton FRs (night survey, morning survey, camera trapping, salt
lick monitoring, birds observation and opportunistic sighting)
Measurable Effectiveness Indicators
The wildlife management activities are actively conducted within USM SFMP especially in
Bukit Piton FR and Malua FR. The activities involved such as direct and indirect sighting
through transect (night spot, morning drive and hornbill observation), opportunistic sighting
and camera trapping. All method been used was adopted and followed from the
comprehensive field manual of monitoring large terrestrial mammals in Sabah by Ancrenaz
(2013). Any wildlife species detected during survey should be recorded to determine the
species concerned. Every time wildlife spotted, the team will stops for species identification
and for collecting additional information (e.g. numbers of animal, behavior upon detection,
times and distance). All wildlife signs detected will be analyze by using linear kilometric
index (number of sighting/km).

1.0 Findings of Fauna Assessment
2016
In 2016 several activities were carried out such as nightspots, morning drive, opportunistic
wildlife sighting, inspection to artificial saltlick, setting-up camera trapping, hornbill surveys
and ground Orang-utan nest census. Most wildlife monitoring session in year 2016 was
postponed due road and logistic problem.
Based on current ground Orang-utan nest census suggested that the Orang-utan densities
ranges within Malua FR and Bukit Piton Rehabilitation Project area was between 1.03 - 3.25
individual/km2 and most nest detected on the medium size tree and lower crown of dominant
trees i.e. pioneers species (Table 1 and Figure 1).

census within Ulu Segama-Malua Sustainable Forest Management project area

Survey Period
Presently, 58 (or 26.36%) species of terrestrial mammals with 24 families were identified and
recorded within to USM-SFM project area since 2009 (Table 2 and Table 3). According to
Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 classification, we realized that seven (or 12.28%) of
species recorded was categorized as under schedule I (means totally protected) such Bos
javanicus, Helarctos malayanus, Nasalis larvatus, Neofelis nebolusa, Pongo pygmaeus,
Dicerorhinus sumatrensis and Elephas maximus, and more than 40 (70.18%) species under
schedule II (protected species-limited hunting with license) and eight (or 14.04%) species
inclusive under schedule III (protected species-hunting with license) (Figure 2). While in
IUCN red list criteria, 36.21% (or n=21) species was classified as “Threatened Species”
(3.51% critically endangered, 14.04% endangered and 19.30% vulnerable), 56.90% of
wildlife species recorded was considered as “Low Risk” under IUCN criteria (the listed was
inclusive 46.55% least concern and 10.34% near threatened) and 6.90% wildlife species
recorded was listed as “Data Deficient” (Figure 3).

Based on nightspot and morning drive information, we found that wildlife species (both
arboreal and arboreta) detection per km/day was < 1 detections with average ranges between
0.01 – 0.14 and 0.01 – 0.04 respectively (Figure 4 and Figure 5). Similar for opportunistic
sighting whereby detection per day was also < 1 (ranging from 0.01 – 0.53 detections/day)
(Figure 6). Activity on direct (physical) and indirect (prints) sighting, we found that the

For bird’s assessment, currently more than 100 bird’s species were recorded within Malua
forest reserve and Bukit Piton rehabilitation project area (Table 4). Based on birds taxa, we
realized that 6.63% (or n=11) of species that were recorded was categorized as threatened
species such Helmeted hornbill, Storm’s stork, Black crowned pitta, Blue headed pitta,
Bornean wren babbler, Scaly-breasted Partridge, Great slaty woodpecker, Large billed blue
flycatcher, Large green pigeon, Short toed coucal and Wallace's hawk eagle. While, 92.35%
(or n=164) of birds species recorded were identified and listed as low risk under IUCN red
list criteria (Figure 7).
