Fifth Grade Summer Math Packet Happy Summer! Below, I have provided some directions/things to remember that I think will help the students complete each worksheet. My recommendation would be to do all of the work on theme paper because majority of the problems require a few steps. Please make sure to turn in all of your work when handing in your summer math packet. Worksheet 1-Crossword Remember to use Order of Operations to solve each problem correctly. (PEMDAS) Worksheet 2-Decimal Place Clues The following are examples of how to write the decimal 0.654 in the three different decimal forms. o 1) Standard form: 0.654, 2) Word form: six hundred fifty four thousandths, 3) Standard form: 0.6 + 0.05 + 0.004 Worksheet 3-Chapter 8 Posttest When dividing decimals, remember to bring up the decimal point into the quotient and divide regularly. Worksheet 4-“What did Captain Hook Say in the Bakery?” Use a ruler when connecting the two boxes to make it easier to see which number and letter the line crosses through. When finding the GCF, or Greatest Common Factor, list the factors of both the numbers and find the largest number in both lists. When finding the LCM, or Least Common Multiple, list the multiples of both the numbers and find the smallest number in both lists. GCF of 6 & 10 = 2; LCM of 6 & 10 = 30 Worksheet 5-Subtraction Code Rewrite the problem on the worksheet. Do the work on a separate piece of paper. Remember when subtracting fractions, you first must do “times sign, line, equal sign, line” to find a common denominator and then subtract. If the top numerator is smaller than the bottom numerator, you must borrow! Worksheet 6-“What did the Ms. Snerd Say…” When multiplying mixed numbers, remember to change to improper fractions, then multiply the numerator and denominator. When diving fractions, remember to do the Division Poem: The first one is fine, now change the sign, flip the second fraction on the line. Worksheet 7-“What Happened to Mr. Meter…” When finding the perimeter of a parallelogram, remember to add all FOUR sides. The formula for finding the area of a parallelogram is: Area = base x height. Remember when adding decimals, line up the decimals. When multiplying decimals, do the “Decimal Dance.” Worksheet 8- The Gift of Volume The formula for finding volume is: Volume = length x width x height Worksheet 9 & 10: Problem Solving Decide whether you need to add, subtract, multiply, or divide to solve the problems. Remember decimal and fraction operation rules when solving each problem. Problem Solving Directions: The following word problems require students to add, subtract, multiply, or divide to find the solution. 1) Mr. Finnigan bought 3 1/8 quarts of lemonade and 6 ¼ quarts of iced tea for the school picnic. He needs a total of at least 9 ½ quarts of lemonade and iced tea. Did Mr. Finnegan buy enough? 2) Sara is baking chocolate chip cookies for the school bake sale. She uses 5 1/3 cups white sugar and 3 ¾ cups brown sugar. How much more white sugar than brown sugar does Sara use? 3) Steven and his friends are preparing food for a party. Lisa is able to fit 2 2/3 bags of chips into a large bowl. Each bag contains 6 ½ servings of chips. How many servings of chips are in the bowl? 4) Mary Kate and her friends are preparing food for a party. Eddie has washed a dozen strawberries. She cut each strawberry into fourths. How many pieces does Suzanne have now? 5) Melissa went to the gym to exercise. She walked on the treadmill for 30.45 minutes. She played basketball for 33.25 minutes. Then she stayed on the bike 25.7 minutes. How many minutes was Melissa’s exercise? 6) Jenna and her sister paid $9.50 for tickets to a bike race. They bought one adult’s ticket and one child’s ticket. The adult’s ticket cost $5.75. What was the cost of Jenna’s ticket? 7) Each class period at school is 35.5 minutes. How many minutes is the school day if there are nine class periods? 8) In one hour, a 27-student class collected $9.45 from recycling cans and bottles. If the money was divided evenly, how much did each student receive?
