Elijah A SPRING MASTERWORKS CONCERT 2017 The East Texas Community Chorus by Felix Mendelssohn & The Longview Symphony Orchestra Melanie Sullivan, soprano Virginia Boaz, mezzo-soprano Jon Starling, tenor Eric Thomas, bass Dr. Jim Taylor, director M endelssohn’s oratorio, Elijah, more than almost any other major work, was immediately recognized at its first performance as a masterpiece. It is a gripping chronicle of the life of the bold prophet who by prayer withheld and later restored rain to the land, who challenged the prophets of Baal to a trial by fire, who confronted the evil monarchs Ahab and Jezebel, and who rode to heaven by a whirlwind. Mendelssohn’s music is passionate and clear, and his commitment to the Christian faith rings through from beginning to end. Presented free of charge to the greater East Texas community through the sponsorship of Kilgore College, Trinity Episcopal Church, and local businesses and donors.
