MARCH NEWSLETTER ISSUE #31 THE IMPORTANCE OF FLEXIBILITY Flexibility is defined as the ability to move freely and effortlessly within a given range of motion. Flexibility is extremely important in everyday activities and movements. Bending, lifting, twisting, are all movements essential for our health. There are several factors that can reduce our flexibility, such as age, lifestyle choices/habits, activity level, nutrition etc. Poor flexibility can eventually lead to decreased movement, and mobility, possible injuries and in some cases chronic pain. This newsletter will focus on some of the specific areas important in improving flexibility and in turn our overall health and well-being. As we age our flexibility tends to decrease, joints can become stiff and immobile. The immobility within our joints is mainly caused by a reduction in movement. The connective tissue surrounding our joints becomes more and more inelastic. Our workplaces, daily postures and sedentary lifestyle can create imbalances within our bodies, leading to further immobility. When our joints do not move freely within their given range of motion, bigger problems can develop, such as injury, pain, arthritis etc. Therefore the best thing that we can do for our flexibility is to STAY ACTIVE! “MOTION IS LOTION”- it increases circulation, lubricates joints, and helps in maintaining overall health. BENEFITS OF IMPROVED FLEXIBILITY *DECREASES TENSION WITHIN MUSCLES *INCREASES JOINT AND CONNECTIVE TISSUE HEALTH *DECREASES RISK OF INJURY AND CHRONIC PAIN *IMPROVES CIRCULATION, DECREASING STRESS ON THE HEART *IMPROVES POSTURE AND MISALIGNMENTS *INCREASES STRENGTH & CARDIOVASCULAR TRAINING *STRENGTHENS SPECIFIC CORE & SPINAL STABILIZERS *PROMOTES BOTH MENTAL & PHYSICAL RECOVERY MOST COMMON TYPES OF FLEXIBILITY WORK 1.
