~ MEWSLETTER ~ Bolton & Radcliffe Branch Summer 2009 Edition 1.2 Summer 2009 Hello and another big meowy welcome to the summer edition of the Cats Protection Bolton & Radcliffe branch ‘Mewsletter’. Despite several attempts we have finally managed to track her down. Ms CP Bolton & Radcliffe herself.. Carol! Our welfare officer is always busy rescuing cats in the Radcliffe and Bolton area but we managed to grab 5 minutes with her for a quick cat chat. Read page 6 for this world exclusive! As the country falls deeper into recession, animal welfare charities are really feeling the pinch . This branch is no exception. It has been widely reported that more animals are being abandoned as individuals tighten their belts as a result of the ‘credit crunch.’ There is also the added blows for animal welfare charities that donations are falling and fewer people are coming forward to offer animals a home. This branch is full to capacity with 45 cats currently in need of a home. Last year we rehomed on average 16 cats per month, compared to an average of 9 per month so far this year. Last year the branch was in the black, but since January we have lost £1,000 a month after vets’ fees, pet food and cat litter costs were accounted for. It is now more than ever we really need your support. For more information on how you can help please visit bolton.cats.org.uk or email [email protected]. As always thanks for your continued support, the branch really couldn’t run without it. Until next time ‘Me-Out’! 5 ‘When I grow up I want to be a Cats Protection volunteer’ 1 What’s in this issue: 1 It’s been a really busy few months for the branch with all our fundraising activities. I really think I deserve it. ‘Please can you give me a home, I’ve been here for ages!!!’ Charlie Daisy: Loving 12 year old seeks quiet retirement home Hello, I'm Daisy & I'm looking for a new home where I can laze my days away, pottering in the garden & sleeping mainly ! I'm no trouble & I would be your friend for life - please come & meet me !! ‘I’ve still got plenty of love to give’ Daisy Sandy White & ginger 3 year old male Hello folks, I'm Sandy. I didn't have a microchip so these lovely people couldn't find out where I'd come from ! They reckon I'm somewhere between 6 - 8 years, but hey, I say, what does age matter - it's style that counts ! I'm a real gentleman cat who likes a quiet and relaxed sort of life so they reckon I'd be best suited in a home with no children to disturb my peace! I do like to stroll around the grounds & survey my patch, so a home with a garden would be nice. ‘Do you have room for me?’ Suri ‘I’ve been with the branch by far the longest.. Please take me home’ Henry Suri: Tabby & white male seeks happy ending I'm Suri, a rather handsome tabby & white lad aged approx 2 - 3 years old. I had a tough life before I came here, living as a stray on the streets. I was here with my friend Tux but he's now gone to his new home, so I'm feeling kind of lonely. The lady who's looking after me is great, but I'd really like a home of my own with people who will understand that I've had a tough time & am still wary of people but I'm improving every day. I do like other cats, so I wouldn't mind sharing. Emma Hedley flew out to the island of Tenerife to take part in a 7 day trap, neuter and release (TNR) programme as a volunteer ‘cat trapper’.Here is her story The purpose of the programme is to control the cat population on the island which is a real problem in terms of the welfare of those cats. There are thousands of feral (wild) cats on the island and the numbers are increasing every day as they continue to breed within their colonies. The average life span of one of those feral cats (if they survive beyond kittenhood) is just 2 years compared with that of a domestic house cat which is on average 14-20 years. Some of the problems faced by the feral cats of Tenerife include:- Whilst the cats are under anaesthetic, the tip of one ear if snipped off so that they can be identified as a neutered cat; this ensures that they are not trapped again in the future and operated on unnecessarily. There is also a recovery area where the cats are cared for over the next 48 hours so that they can be fed and kept warm whilst the anaesthetic completely wears off, after which the cats are returned to the same spot where they were trapped. Disease - which can be spread through mating and fighting (both of which usually stop after neutering). When left untreated the cat will die a slow and unpleasant death, usually infecting others along the way; Injury – a cat wounded in a fight, by a predator or hit by a car will usually die a slow and painful death after weeks of suffering without any veterinary treatment; Poison - which is put down by some local people/farmers who view the cats as pests; Starvation – in the mountains the cats tend to live on lizards, whilst in the towns they must rely on scraps from the tourists and locals; The TNR programme was organised and funded by an animal welfare charity called ‘San Francisco’ which is based in Tenerife. The TNR programme involved a team of volunteer trappers using humane cat traps (baited with tasty treats of course) to trap the feral cats in order to transport them to a make shift ‘clinic’ where volunteer vets were waiting to neuter the cats. The ‘clinic’ was actually an apartment set up as a temporary veterinary surgery with operating tables, equipment and drugs to neuter the trapped cats. One of the Tenerife kitties trapped. He will neutered and then returned to the wild During the trip the team managed to trap, neuter and return 218 cats in 7 days – preventing the birth of thousands of kittens who would have struggled to survive and would have faced a very tough life even if they had. Whilst the outcome of the trip was a fantastic achievement for all of those involved, in reality it was just the tip of the iceberg as there are thousands more unneutered feral cats on the island. The drugs and equipment used by the vets during this 7 day trip cost in the region of £4,000 and therefore the charity must now raise the funds for the next TNR programme. If you are interested in volunteering for the future TNR programmes in and would like more information, please contact Emma at [email protected]. Did you know that in just 5 years a un-neutered female can be responsible for 20,000 descendents? If that’s not enough encouragement to get your cat neutered then read on… Neutering facts There are around 2.5 million stray cats living in the UK Cats can become sexually active from 4 months old Gestation in cats (the length of pregnancy) is nine weeks and a female cat can come into seasons again just six weeks after giving birth. A cat can have up to three litters a year with 5 or 6 kittens. That adds up to 18 homes for Cats Protection to find each year, just for one cat’s kittens! ‘I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again .. There is no shortage of kittens!’ 1 Some of the benefits of neutering can be: Neutered male cats Will become less likely to roam (reducing the risk2 of being run over). Will become less likely to fight, thus improving their chances of avoiding serious diseases, like 3 feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) which are transmitted by cat bites and reproductive activity. ‘3 Litters a year?!… I’m glad we’ve been done!’ Will be less likely to mark their territory with urine (spraying). Catscats have 290 bones in their body, and 517 Female muscles Can avoid unwanted pregnancies (It is NOT beneficial for a female cat to have a litter before spaying, this is a myth). Won't call and wail during their sexual cycle. Will be less likely to contract diseases spread by bites and reproductive activity. Cats Protection run an assisted Neutering Scheme to help those on benefits pay for the cost of neutering. For more details email [email protected] Cats recover very quickly from neutering operations but we'd recommend following your vet's advice on how to look after your cat after his operation. We have finally pinned her down! Ms ‘ CP Bolton and Radcliffe’ herself Carol Farrell! Carol has been a dedicated welfare and homing officer since the branch was established and is now quite a celebrity in the local area! She managed to take 10 minutes out of her busy cat-protecting timetable to have are chat with the Mewsletter: How and why did you get involved in the Cats Protection? I originally began helping at Cats Protection with my daughter who was interested in cats. We already had our own cats and we lived nearby What is your role and what does it involve? I am the Welfare & Homing Officer for the Bolton & Radcliffe Branch. Being Welfare Officer involves speaking to people who have cats that need to come into our care for rehoming, arranging to pick them up and be checked by the vet. I also organise the routine vet visits for the cats and provide general support to the fosterers. As Homing Officer, I speak to people who would like to adopt a cat or kitten from us and arrange for them to have a Home Visit. Both roles require lots of paperwork to be complete and this need to be recorded and filed with National Cat Centre every year. Carol is pictured with her 1 Persian cat, Piper, who was rescued after being dumped on a railway line What is the best part of volunteering for the Cats 2 Protection? The best parts of volunteering for Cats Protection are handrearing kittens who have lost their mother and seeing them grow into happy, healthy cats and also seeing our cats and kittens going to their new homes and a happy ending. And the worse part? The worst part is seeing cruelty and mistreatment first hand and not having the resources to help all the cats and kittens we hear about. What the volunteers say: ‘Carol was my first real insight to CP and from first speaking with her I realised the dedication that she puts into her work with the cats. She is one in a million!’ JH Which cat do you remember the most and why? Many years ago, we had a pregnant cat come into care which was kept in a fosterers house while she had her kittens. One “Tiny & not good with names…. morning, I went to help in and we found Cats havedown 290 bones their body, that andshe 517had only But ours” PP had one kitten. We weremuscles sure this couldn’t be right as she has seemed to be too big just to have one kitten. We searched the ‘An absolute star, BRCP could house and found, one after another, 3 other kittens. But as not function with out her, they had been born some hours earlier they were cold and Thanks Carol from all at BRCP lifeless. We revived them using warm water and once they including all cats’ CM appeared to come round we put them with their mother. After a ‘Thoroughly dedicated to the few minutes they began to suckle and they all survived and CP cause, hundreds of cats eventually went onto new homes. now have better lives and And finally.. Why do you think cats are the nation’s loving homes as a direct result favourite pet? of Carol’s hard work’ CV Cats are independent free spirits but they have lots of love to give. Well we would love to hear from you and discuss the volunteering options we have available at our branch. The branch is solely staffed by willing volunteers who commit some of their precious free time to the welfare of our feline friends in and around Bolton& Radcliffe, and we are always looking for new enthusiastic volunteers. The branch does not have a specific cat centre and the opportunities for volunteering are more varied which will ensure there is something to suit all levels of availability & involvement. The opportunities available are: Fundraising: This could involve helping out at fundraising Don’t let the photo put you events (fairs, car boot sales and auctions), generating off volunteering...we’re really fundraising ideas or providing admin support for events. We not a bad gang! have a very active and committed fundraising team who play a vital role in allowing the branch to keep ticking along! Helping Fosterers: The cats in our care are homed in specially designed cat pens, these pens are situated in our fosterer’s gardens as we do not have a cat centre. Therefore we need volunteers to help our fosterers by doing shifts at the cat pens where you will feed; water, administer medication and health check the cats in our care, as well as changing litter and generally keeping the pens clean and tidy for the cats. This could also involve the transportation of cats to the vets for appointments or delivery of supplies to the fosterers. Home Visitors: This involves visiting the homes of people who wish to adopt cats in our care. These opportunities are not immediately available to new volunteers. There really are loads of opportunities to get involved. So if you are interested committing some of your free time to helping the cats & kittens of our area, please contact us asap! Pets at Home The branch is delighted to be partnered with the Bolton, Manchester Rd Pets at Home store. So far this year we have held two fundraising weekends at the store, raising valuable funds and increasing awareness of the branch. During the events our volunteers are on-hand to share cat care advice and provide information about the work of the branch. The staff are very welcoming and many of them are as mad about cats as our volunteers. A purrfect match in our opinion! Located at the back of the store is a Cats Protection food collection bin and Cats Protection posters. Please feel free to have a look and of course any food donation will be gratefully received. For the next in-store event please visit our website. Two of our volunteers, Phil & Chedia, had the exciting (yet daunting) opportunity to talk to approximately 150 year seven’s about the valuable work of Cats Protection and also about general tips and advice regarding cat care. ‘At kitten school we’re being taught valuable skills.. How to look cute!’ Topics covered in the presentation included: Where our cats come from, success stories, the cost of cat ownership, neutering, rehoming and cat welfare. The sessions were very interactive and involved the children generating ideas and discussing issues with their school mates. All the students who attended were presented with a goody bag at the end of the session and the children could be seen sporting their CP badges & balloons hours after the event. We were made to feel very welcome by all the staff and students at the school. The feedback from both Bury Church School and Cats Protection volunteers was extremely positive; it was a valuable exercise for all involved. Look out in the next Mewsletter for poems created by the Year 7s about cat welfare. If you are interested in the possibility of Cats Protection attending an event you are organising or delivering an educational presentation at a school, please contact us. ‘Where there is hope…’ Last month saw the launch of B&R Branch photo competition. Due to a poor number of entries the competition was withdrawn. This will also allow the Branch to focus limited resources on more popular events and features. Nevertheless we felt we had to publish the winning photo from the March entries. The photo is of Tyler, who at the time the photo was taken was just 2 weeks old . She was one in a litter of four. Sadly one kitten died and Tyler was born with very deformed feet. She is very healthy despite this and a real fighter. Annette, her owner, is hopeful that Tyler will go on to lead a full and happy life as an indoor cat. Suitably Annette suggested the caption to this photo should be ‘where there is hope..’ The Branch would like to thank Annette for taking the time to send us the photo and would like to wish her and Tyler a very happy future. It’s your Aunt Kathleen here again, ready to listen to all your kitty problems. This is the only part of the Mewsletter that is written by a cat for cats. However my lovelies a cruel, cruel rumour has emerged on the kitty circuit suggesting that this feature is not written by me Kat the cat! Suggestions include a dog or maybe even a human. I can guarantee I am a cat, just look at my photo! Don’t make me purr… As if a dog could discuss such complex issues in such a sophisticated manner! Remember possums a problem shared is a problem solved Dear Kat, How do I go green? I keep hearing on the mews that we need to ‘go green’ to help the save the Earth but I’m a black and white kitten and don’t fancy dying my fur! What can I do to help? Love Confused in Clifton xx Dear Confused, Going Green has nothing to do with the colour of your fur! It’s about taking little steps to save the planet. For example reminding your owners to recycle your empty cat food tins with a loud meow is one way you could help. And I know its tempting to want that cosy warm fire on all the time, but on sunny days try and not guilt your stroker into switching it on.. Go and lie in the sun and save energy! Oh and for future reference us kitties are allergic to hair dye so please don’t use it! All my love & head rubs Kat xxx Molly and Oscar Update You may remember in the last Mewsletter we featured Molly (pictured below) and her son Oscar (left), who were looking for their forever home. We are pleased to report that shortly after the Mewsletter was released ,they found a loving home with their new owner Jackie. As you can see by the photos they are doing absolutely great! Their recent adventure has been exploring the garden. Well, Oscar has been to play out in the garden and Molly has peered out of the door with a frightened look! By the look of the photos they seem to like the lazy indoor life! Jackie reports their personalities are really showing through now. Oscar gets up early every morning to shout for his breakfast and Molly follows downstairs.... if she's got the energy to get out of bed....Jackie can't imagine how quiet the house would be without them now! ‘Me? The only way we can continue to care for desperate cats is through a regular income, which means even the smallest fundraising event can make a world of a difference. We look forward to seeing you at one of our exciting 2009 events very soon. Events so far…. The fundraisers have been extremely busy organising events since the March Mewsletter. But it doesn’t stop there, just look at the timetable of events below!! Since March fundraising events have included a fantastic fashion show, 2 pub quizes, a Pets at home weekend, a dog show (yes we realise the irony!), a pet show, the Bury Carnival and several car boots! All events have been well attended and the Branch is overwhelmed by the generosity of the general public in both giving donations at events and donating items for the car boot sales. There is still a long way to go however in raising sufficient funds to maintain the branch. One of the few ‘summer’ events where the sun came out! There are loads of way you can help the Branch and attending one of our event is one of the most fun and easiest ways to do this; you can’t miss us at the summer fates and festivals.. We’re in a large, bright yellow gazebo! If you’re having a clear out why not donate your items for use in our car boot sales? Or maybe you own a business or know a celebrity and can donate something to sell at our biggest fundraising event of the year; ‘The celebrity auction’ on the 13th November. This event sold out last year so please email us asap to register your interest. Misty This lovely young cat wasn't in our care for long...we knew she'd win someone's heart quickly & we were right. Misty was adopted on 2 March & her new owners have sent us an update on her: “She is settling in very well. Now she has got to know us she is so affectionate and just loves to sit on our knees and be petted. She is reluctant to go to bed at night as we are sure she would rather be in bed with us than in her own basket but she is getting the hang of how it all works. She has given us hours of pleasure playing with her toy mice and she loves chasing a ping pong ball around the room. She has not shown any signs of wanting to venture outside yet but enjoys watching the birds in the garden from the bedroom windowsill. She is quite vocal especially when she wants fussing over Misty Posing for the which seems to be 24-7 but we wouldn’t have it any other camera.. Beautiful! way. We are just pleased that we have been able to give a cat a 1 second chance of a good life. " Pudding A letter from one of our satisfied moggies! Pudding has written us an letter ( with the help of his new 2 mum Sophie), here it is : ‘Is that another cat in my garden?’ Pudding "I just thought I'd drop you a line to let you know how I'm getting on in my new home. I get lots of attention from my 3 new owner, Sophie who says I purr very loudly and that I snore when I'm asleep ( but of course I don't !) I spend my time looking out of the window and staring at the other cats who dare to enter the garden. I go to the front door and say hello to Sophie when she comes in from work. I also like to say hello to her at 4 a.m. in the morning , but she doesn't seem to like this so much. I like to stay inside where it's nice & warm & I can snuggle up on the sofa and go to sleep. Sophie got me some toys & I like to play with my ball & my clockwork chicken. So I'd like to say thank you to everyone at Cats Protection who looked after me when I was in your care. Lots of love Pudding." LAST BUT NOT LEAST May we convey our heartfelt thanks to each and everyone who has helped our cause, from Cash Donations Jumble for car boots Prizes for Raffles Gifts for Tombola Time and effort in supporting our events We hope to have your continuous support that would be PURRRRFECT………….
