Transferring Courses - Basic Rules

Colleges typically grant transfer credit for QCC courses that are
completed with a minimum grade of “C” or “C-” and that may be
used towards general or major-related requirements.

Transferrable courses also need to be college-level—that means,
courses that begin at the 100 level and up. Courses that begin with
090-099, are considered developmental, and do not transfer. In
most cases, ESL courses are also considered developmental.

Credits transfer, grades do not. The receiving college will apply
transferable credits to your program of study there and you will be
begin with a new GPA at that school.

Colleges usually have a transfer credit cap (or maximum) for the
number they will allow students to transfer in. In many cases, 60-65
QCC credits are transferable to a four-year college. Some colleges
allow between 70-90 credits. Check with the specific school to find
out what their transfer credit maximum is.

More and more colleges offer online course equivalency databases
at their websites where students can check for matching coursework. You can also make an appointment with transfer admissions
counselors at four-year schools to find out how QCC courses will
transfer.

At the admissions appointment, bring a copy of your grades or an
unofficial transcript. The transfer admissions counselor can look it
over and provide an unofficial estimate of transfer credits. You still
need to send official QCC transcripts when you apply for admission
to receive transfer credit for your courses.
Check out Course Equivalencies under “Advanced information” at the
Transfer Office website, www.qcc.mass.edu/transfer, for more
information about schools that accept QCC courses.

Transfer Events
WITS (Walk-In Transfer Sessions)
Students are encouraged to drop in—no appointment necessary to any
or all WITS dates. Students can get quick answers to transfer questions
and learn how to develop a transfer plan. WITS are held throughout the
fall and spring semesters.
Transfer Visits
Each semester, admissions representatives from area colleges and
universities visit QCC to meet with students to help with transfer
planning. These are great opportunities to meet with transfer
admissions counselors to learn more about transfer requirements and
steps to enroll.
Transfer Fairs
Transfer fairs take place each fall and spring semester. Representatives
from over 30 colleges and universities participate. Students are
encouraged to attend the fairs to collect information and ask questions
about transfer opportunities.
Transfer Services Website
Transfer agreement information, steps on how to transfer, scholarship
information, the transfer appointment calendar, and much more is
available at: www.qcc.mass.edu/transfer.
Details on the WITS schedule, Transfer Visits and Transfer Fair are posted
at “The Q” student portal, in the Open Door student newspaper, and on
flyers around campus.

Basics of Transferring
Think of transfer as a “project”
1. Start thinking about majors. Pick one that interests you! For help,
view the “Career/Major Search” link at the Transfer Services website.
2. Identify colleges that offer your choice of major. For help, go to the
“College Search” link at the Transfer Services website.
3. Start a list of colleges that you want to learn more about.
4. Use college websites. Look for information on majors, transfer
application requirements and steps, cost of attendance, and the financial
aid process.
5. Attend QCC Transfer events: WITS, Transfer Visits and Transfer Fairs.
6. Visit colleges. Ask questions about transfer admissions requirements. Bring QCC transcripts and ask for a transfer credit evaluation.
7. Talk about your transfer plan with your Academic Advisor, your
Instructors, and Transfer Services staff.
8. Apply for admission: Look for TRANSFER application deadlines and
follow TRANSFER application steps. Make a list of documents you will
need to send when you apply.
9. Apply for financial aid. Estimate cost of attendance and check with
colleges to confirm the forms needed. Need help? Go to the “Financial
Aid & Scholarships” page at the Transfer Services website.
10. Follow-up! Contact the admissions office at the four-year college to
make sure all necessary documents have been received. Remember to
send a final QCC transcript. Follow directions to next steps in enrollment
at your new school. Congratulations!
