Evergreen museum & library Director’s Trip
Se pte m b e r 19 – 2 5 | 2 0 16
Dear Friends,
I invite you to join me on an extraordinary exploration of Mexico City inspired by
Ambassador and Mrs. Garrett’s many years of friendship with the Mexican artist, writer,
and anthropologist Miguel Covarrubias (1904–57). Today’s Mexico City is a beautiful and
vibrant city, with plazas and palm trees, murals by Mexican masters, and contemporary
street art. Its rich, 1,000-year history intermingles distinctly modern atmospherics created
by stunning contemporary art and architecture. We will visit Aztec ruins, tour some of the
city’s great fine art and cultural institutions, and share in the energetic modern culture of
this most exciting North American city. Throughout the tour, great meals are provided at
top restaurants, affording a varied sampling of Mexico’s wide-ranging cuisine.
As ongoing supporters with strong ties to the Johns Hopkins University Museums, we are
offering you the opportunity to join us on this exclusive tour. The trip price is $3,200 ($2,750
land-only) based on ten travelers, of which $200 may be considered a tax-deductible
charitable contribution to Evergreen Museum & Library. As you will read in the following
itinerary, the all-inclusive trip includes international flights, accommodations based
on double occupancy (the single supplement is $600), private ground transportation,
extensive and personalized cultural activities and tours, and exceptional meals.
Please complete the enclosed Reservation Form and return it with your deposit of $600
per person by May 15, after which time deposits cannot be refunded. Full payment for
the trip is required by July 15. This trip has already generated significant interest and the
number of travelers is limited. Reservations will be recorded in the order that completed
forms and deposits are received.
If you need additional information, please contact Nancy Powers at 410.516.0341 or
[email protected].
Sincerely,
James Archer Abbott

Monday, September 19
Depart 5:20pm from washington dulles airport, arriving in mexico city at 9:05pm.
Our local guide will escort us to the sumptuous Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico, our home
for the next six nights. This splendid five-star hotel is housed in the city’s most dramatic
Art Nouveau palace, with an enormous Tiffany glass dome, and perfectly located in the
prettiest part of the Centro Histórico near the Catedral Metropolitana, one of Mexico
City’s most iconic structures. Enjoy light refreshments upon arrival at the hotel.
Tuesday, September 20 | Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Explore Mexico City’s zócalo, the beating heart of Mexico’s capital and one of the world’s
largest city squares, and view spectacular murals completed for a post-revolutionary
Mexico that embraced public art to help educate the masses. At the Palacio de Bellas
Artes admire immense murals by Rufino Tamayo, Diego Rivera, David Siqueiros, and
José Clemente Orozco in a phenomenal white-marble palace built in 1905 under Italian
architect Adamo Boari, who favored Neoclassical and Art Nouveau styles. Continue to
the Palacio Nacional to see Rivera’s most famous murals, depicting Mexican civilization
from the arrival of Quetzalcóatl (the Aztec plumed serpent god) to the post-revolutionary
period. Visit the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, a stunning, compact amphitheatre that
is dominated by Rivera’s first mural, La Creación, which depicts the creation of science
and art through figures and symbols. Following a luncheon of Mexican specialties, see
Latin America’s largest collection of decorative arts at the Museo Franz Mayer, housed
in a gorgeous 18th-century building with a quiet cloister, which once served as a hospice
run by the San Juan de Dios order of monks. Also visit the Museo de Arte Popular, a major
showcase for Mexican folk art housed in an outstanding example of 1920s Art Deco by
architect Vicente Mendiola. This evening attend a welcome dinner at one of Mexico City’s
best restaurants.

Wednesday, September 21 | Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Friday, September 23 | Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Explore the Mexico City of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera—
the fascinating couple that painted in extraordinary and
post-revolutionary times. Visit La Casa Azul–Museo Frida
Kahlo, the beautiful three-winged house where memorabilia
and personal belongings evoke Kahlo’s often tempestuous
relationship with Rivera, and the leftist intellectual circle that
they entertained here. The world’s most important collection
of works by Rivera and Kahlo are housed at the Museo
Dolores Olmeda Patiño in a magnificent hacienda setting
surrounded by lush gardens. Also visit the Museo Casa Estudio
Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, a modernist building comprising
two separate wings that was built for the couple in 1932 by
architect Juan O’Gorman. Following lunch, drift through the
magnificent chinampas (floating gardens) of Xochimilco
in a colorful trajinera (gondola) amid a network of small
canals—once an extensive agrarian canal system that fed
the Aztec capital. Explore quiet, colonial coyoacán, one of
Mexico City’s oldest neighborhoods with sixteenth-century
mansions and the church of San Juan Bautista, one of the
oldest churches in Mexico City. Enjoy dinner together at a
local restaurant.
At Chapultepec Park, discover the turbulence and grandeur
of Mexican history at the lavish Castillo Chapultepec, the
location from which Mexico made one of its last stands
against the Spaniards. Emperor Maximilian used the castle,
parts of which date to 1783, as his residence and seven
presidents followed his example until it was turned into
the Museo Nacional de Historia, with checkerboard marble
terraces, fountains, historic artifacts, and tremendous
views. Continue to the Museo Nacional de Antropología,
one of the world’s most spectacular museums, and explore
Mexico’s ancient cultures from pre-Hispanic Mayan
civilizations to the Spanish conquest. Following lunch, visit
the chic neighborhood of polanco and admire the superb
museums of Soumaya and Jumex, housing expertly curated
private collections of European and contemporary art
in stunningly-designed modern buildings. Enjoy dinner
together at a local restaurant.
Thursday, September 22 | Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Explore the Aztec city Teotihuacán, one of the most
remarkable and haunting archaeological sites in Mexico.
Mystery envelops this former city of 200,000; although
it was the epicenter of culture and commerce for ancient
Mesoamerica, its inhabitants vanished without a trace.
Walking down the expansive site’s Avenue of the Dead see
some of the world’s most awe-inspiring ancient structures,
including the Pyramid of the Sun, the Pyramid of the Moon,
and the Temple of the Plumed Serpent. Enjoy lunch near
the ruins. Continue to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora
de Guadalupe, Mexico’s most important religious site.
Designed by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, the basilica is a vast,
round, open-plan structure with a capacity of more than
40,000 people. Enjoy dinner together at a local restaurant.
Saturday, September 24 | Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Tour the Ciudad Universitaria campus at Universidad Nacional
Autónoma de México (UNAM), the most notable collection of
buildings in the city, thanks to its ambitious scale, historical
motifs, vast art holdings, and famed sports facilities. Among
the stand-out buildings are the ten-story Central Library,
covered with colorful murals by Juan O’Gorman that are
rich in Spanish and Aztec symbolism; the 1968 Olympic
Stadium, carved from volcanic stone and bedecked with a
Diego Rivera sculpture; and the Rectory, an administrative
tower most notable for its three-dimensional Siqueiros
murals. The afternoon is at leisure for independent
explorations through the Bazaar Sábado, showcasing some
of Mexico’s best handcrafted jewelry, woodwork, ceramics,
and textiles. The huge artisans’ market held every week
along the cobbled lanes of colonia san ángel includes both
indoor and outdoor shops and booths. Tonight bid adiós to
Mexico during a memorable farewell dinner.
Sunday, September 25 | Breakfast
Fly mexico city to washington dulles, arriving at 3:35pm.
