Using the present in
Ice Cream
Although Nigel Slater is writing about a summer holiday in the 1960s, he writes in the present tense. This is
sometimes called the dramatic present – the story becomes more real because he writes in the present tense
and not the past.
As you know, with he/she/it in the present, you need an -s or an -es at the end of the verb, like this:
I sing
you sing
Father/Mother sings we sing
you sing
they sing
A
I wish
you wish
Nigel wishes
we wish
you wish
they wish
Underline the correct alternatives in this text.
My father sing/sings as he come/comes into the
seaside town. The seagulls squawk/squawks right on
time. The beach stretch/stretches in front of us.
My mother fuss/fusses about finding a parking
place. She spot/spots one. My father sail/sails past it
– again. We miss/misses parking spaces all the time.
We finally manage/manages to find one not too far
away from the hotel.
We unpack/unpacks the suitcases and all the
paraphernalia we bring/brings with us every year –
always the same. The room look/looks the same as
last year – clean but a bit shabby.
The next morning we go/goes to the beach.
I wear/wears red plastic sandals into the sea. I hate/
hates them. None of the other boys wear/wears

sandals. My father play/plays ball games with me.
I catch/catches the wretched ball sometimes, but not
very often. My father sigh/sighs quietly.
We always take/takes lunch at one special café.
I eat/eats as quickly as possible. My mother and
father eat/eats so slowly. Don’t they know ice cream
is what it is all about? The best moment is when
the waitress put/puts the ice cream on the table.
Heaven! I eat/eats every last bit.
In the evening, we walk/walks. Not on the beach.
We walk/walks slowly along the path. One evening,
a young man get/gets changed right in front of us.
He pull/pulls on his jeans but we all see/sees what we
shouldn’t.
‘Golly,’ say/says my mother, ‘in Bournemouth!’

A horse called Rainbow
Well, the words summer and holiday make me want
to neigh and jump around because they make me so
happy. Every summer I’m off on my summer holiday
to meet with friends on a nearby farm. We spend
all day munching sweet grass. This year my holiday
lasted about eight weeks. Eight weeks of non-riding,
as my owners say. Bliss.
I was born in Ireland, in Galway to be precise, and
I’m proud to be able to call myself an Irish Cob. I’m
ten years old. I’m a mare, but have never had any
foals – not yet. And it is not easy to find a partner on
the farm either, because they keep us mares pretty
far away from the stallions.
My owner is a very sweet girl of 13. She normally
rides me four times a week, and so does her mum.
We have had some wonderful trips over the hills
and into the deep forests. Sometimes my owner
and her mum let other people ride me too. Usually
women, but there is also this very experienced rider,
a gentleman who is around 80. As you might have
guessed, I’m a pretty good-natured horse!
As I said – my summers are usually spent playing,
eating, sleeping and running with other horses –
away from my owners. However, this summer I had
to go to the animal hospital. I love eating grass, I
really do, but at the end of this summer there wasn’t
much grass left, and silly me ended up eating some
dirt and sand. It stayed in my stomach and caused me
a lot of pain. So my owners took me to the animal
hospital. This was a surprisingly good experience. I
had my own paddock for three days, and was served
first-class hay and oats. The vets cured me with
some strange medicine that took all the pain away.
My owners are now talking about sending me
to a different farm next summer where they have

ordinary farm animals. They have been told that it
would be good for me to share a paddock with cows
and sheep and a goat! I don’t know really. I suppose
it is OK, but it is just not the same as being with my
own kind.
To be honest, I already have one cow friend on
the farm, but she doesn’t have a name – she is just
Number 34 to the farmers. Both of us are bothered
all summer with all the flies and gnats, so I’m glad I
don’t have a straggly, thin tail like Number 34. My tail
is much bushier and definitely more elegant, as well
as a more effective flyswatter.
When summer was over, I was picked up and
taken back to my stable - and to my saddle. As
always, I had gained a bit of weight during my holiday,
and it’s taking a little while to get fit again. But my
owners are patient and we’re getting there – slowly
but surely.
I wonder if one summer my owners will take me
back to visit Galway. It is a long, long way away, I
know that. But that doesn’t stop me from dreaming
about green grass and the rich, green paddocks
where I grew up.

Hop-on hop-off to Hadrian’s Wall
Language work – past and present
Mark all the verbs and put them in the correct box below.
Remember! You can find the past tense of irregular verbs in the back of a dictionary.
Starting from Newcastle, the AD122 is a hop-on
hop-off bus service. Named after the year in which
the Roman Emperor Hadrian ordered the wall to be
built, the bus covers the 73 miles of the wall. It stops
at all the main Roman sites. People used to think that
the wall was built to defend the Romans from the wild
tribes in the north. But modern historians think it was
simply a border to control who went in and out.
We – myself, my husband and our two young
teenage boys – took the bus from Newcastle Central
Station. The weather was great at the beginning of
the day, so we jumped off at Chesters Fort, which is
the first stop.
500 cavalry soldiers lived at Chesters Fort, and
you can still see what remains of the first underfloor
heating system in the commandant’s house. There
is also a good example of the bathhouses that the
Verbs in the
present tense
Romans were so famous for, so the boys started
climbing down into the baths and had to be hauled
back before someone came and threw us out!
Sometimes they are really embarrassing.
Next stop for us was Housesteads, one of the
forts on the wall. Housesteads was built in about
124 AD. It is the best example of the thirteen forts
on the wall, and you can really imagine how the 800
soldiers lived there. Lots of the walls of the buildings are still there, and then, of course, there are the
toilets. The boys did not cross the barriers this time,
but they were fascinated by the communal toilets.
They couldn’t quite believe that the Roman soldiers
all sat there and chatted while they did their business. You can see two huge basins too, where the
soldiers washed their sponges – no soft toilet paper
in those days!

Hogwarts School aka Alnwick Castle
Just a short distance from Newcastle Alnwick
Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in
England. The family of the Duke and Duchess of
Northumberland has lived in the castle since 1309,
but it has become famous in the last few years as
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Of course, only a few of the scenes of the Harry
Potter films were actually filmed at this location,
but when you visit the castle you will recognise the
greens where the Quidditch matches are played.
It’s also where the students at Hogwarts’ learn
to ride broomsticks. And remember Harry crashing the flying car? Yes,
that’s Alnwick Castle he crashes into. Inside the castle itself, you’ll find the
Hogwarts Library aka the Guest Hall. Not bad for an 11th century castle in a
21st century film.
But Alnwick Castle is much more than a film set. More than 500,000
people a year visit – and lots go just to see the gardens. The Duchess of
Northumberland started work on the new gardens in 1996. Now there is a
maze, a secret garden, the biggest tree house in the world (6,000 square feet
and used in the Harry Potter films as classrooms) and truly amazing water
fountains. You can try out the miniature tractors or play games like Knights’
Quest or Dragons’ Quest. But the most unusual part of the gardens – which
all youngsters want to visit – is The Poison Garden.
As you enter the gardens, you are met with a spooky mist and a notice,
These Plants Can Kill – and many of them can. You cannot go in without
a guide, and the guides tell you ‘Do not touch any of the plants. Don’t even
smell them.’ The gardens opened in 2002 and the Duchess of Northumbria
needs to have police permission and special licences for many of the plants.
For example, there are opium poppies, magic mushrooms and cannabis plants
in the garden – just don’t be tempted to pick them! The local drugs squad
keep a careful eye on the plants.
Altogether, there are about 90 dangerous plants – some have been used
in famous murders, some to drive people mad, some as a sort of chemical
warfare. Armies in the 12th century used Monk’s Hood to poison the enemy –
they simply put the plant down the wells and poisoned the water. If you know
what you are doing, a plant called Henbane can be used to make you ‘nearly
die’. You will seem to be dead, but you will get better. Now, can you think
how that plant can be used?
The castle itself is just an amazing place – and you have to remember that this
is a family home – wow! Just go and see for yourself.

The Great North Run
If you happen to be in Newcastle when the Great
North Run is on, it would be impossible to miss it.
The centre of Newcastle is closed off for the runners
and thousands of people descend on the city.
There are professional runners, but the majority
of people running in the Great North Run are
running for personal reasons. Some want to prove
something to themselves. Some are running in
memory of a friend or family member. Most are
raising money for charities - perhaps to buy a special
machine for sick babies, or for diabetes research or
to raise money for a special centre – there are
thousands of reasons.
Some people are famous. Some people are in
wheelchairs. Some people are blind. Some people
run in their work uniforms. Some people run as a
group. Some people dress up in fancy dress, which
makes running quite difficult.
But whatever the reasons for running, everyone
wants to finish the half marathon race. The Great
North Run is the world’s largest half marathon,
and around 100,000 people apply to run every year.
Although the first run in 1981 had only 12,000
runners, there are now 47,000 – and there is a story
behind every one of the runners.

Many other newspapers wrote about the plane crash on the Elgin O’Hare Expressway.
Here are two of the articles:
Small plane crashes

Article 1
“A flight instructor and his student crash-landed on
Elgin O’Hare Expressway Sunday afternoon when
their plane lost engine power shortly after takeoff
from Schaumburg Airport,” state police said.
The Piper plane flipped over as it landed on
the expressway near Irving Park Road, said Police
Master Sgt. Ted Vernon of the Illinois State Police.
“The instructor, aged about 62, was taken to
St. Alexis Medical Center with head wounds.
His student, about 18 years old, walked away
uninjured,” Vernon said.
“Shortly after taking off from Schaumburg
Airport, the plane began having engine trouble
and the men tried to fly back to the airport. But
the engines lost power,” Vernon said, “forcing
them to land on the Elgin O’Hare Expressway
about 12:40 p.m.”
No motorists were hit, but the plane
clipped a pole or tree and flipped over, he said.
Westbound lanes of the expressway remained
open, but police closed down eastbound lanes.

Article 2
A small plane crashed Sunday afternoon onto an
expressway near Chicago while trying to make an
emergency landing, authorities said. No serious
injuries were reported.
“The plane didn’t hit any vehicles on the
highway,” said Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Ted
Vernon.
The plane, carrying flight instructor John R.
Vashko, 63, and student Kenneth Mattuck Jr., 18,
crashed around 12:40 p.m. on the Elgin-O’Hare
Expressway, less than a mile from Schaumburg
Regional Airport, Vernon said.
Vafhko was hospitalized with a head wound and
was in a fair condition, hospital officials said.
“The student walked away uninjured,” Vernon
said.
“The plane had just taken off from the airport
when it experienced engine trouble. The instructor
first tried to turn the plane around, but the engines
failed and he tried to glide it down onto the
highway,” Vernon said.

After the Boom!
This is what happened after the boom:
The space ship exploded. Flames and wooden pieces
of space ship everywhere. Quickly, Vuyo pulled
Shadow down to the ground. He covered his head
with his hands.
…
Vuyo stood still on the bare hillside. He felt rather
shocked by the noise of the explosion. Shadow leant
against him, pleased to be with him.
“Don’t just stand there! Get something to cover
Children in trouble

Vuyo with a big coat.

legs crossed and his hands placed carefully in front of
him.
Shadow suddenly noticed the commotion below
as the film crew chased after William.
Shadow ran off to join in the fun.
