St. Jerome Catholic Church Fr. Scott Janysek Purification In our Church, there are many opportunities to offer reverence and devotion our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. This includes reception of communion at least weekly in Mass, visiting and praying before the exposed Blessed Sacrament in our time for Adoration on Wednesdays. One way that we also show reverence that is often overlooked is in the purification of the sacred vessels. We must remember that as Catholics, we believe that Jesus is present body, blood, soul and divinity in the host and the chalice. In fact, every drop in the chalice and every crumb from the host contain the entirety of Jesus physical in our world. This is why we must be aware of every crumb and drop during our Eucharistic celebration. During the purification of the vessels, we are making sure that not one crumb or drop of the Precious Body and Blood of Jesus is in any way forgotten about or ignored or disposed of like some ordinary leftovers. It is one of the reasons that I have always disliked hearing of the purification being referred to as “doing the dishes.” There is something much more precious than the left over pot roast at the house or the unfinished glass of wine left after dinner. Because of our love and reverence to Jesus, we strive to make sure that he is honored and revered. This gives us a very unique opportunity to spend a little time meditating on the reality of the Eucharist, that our God came down to Earth and became something as fragile as a piece of bread and a cup of wine. He trusts His physical presence to us in a very real and deeply personal manner only shown to someone who loves us deeply. I pray that we all continue to grow in our love, appreciation and devotion to our Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament, present in our very lives. Please contact the Parish Office if you would like to sponsor either the 4 statue candles at $20 for one week or the Sanctuary Candle at $10 for 1 week. This week, The Blessed Mother, St. Joseph, St. Jerome and Our Lady of Guadalupe Statues are sponsored by the Castillo Family.
