ADMINISTRATION
Parents, we want to thank you for ensuring
your child arrives to school on time each day. As we
know, valuable instruction begins promptly at 8:20.
Parents of students who walk to school, on days of
inclement weather, please send your child to school
with the proper rain attire or an umbrella. Also,
please keep in mind that children who arrive to
school by car must be dropped off in the back parking lot. Many times, our buses can not unload in a
timely manner due to "drop off" cars blocking the
area in the front of school. Also, please do not drop
off students prior to 7:45am unless they are enrolled in Morning Host or a special early morning tutorial program. Thank you so much for your help
with this matter.
Sincerely,
Connie Chisholm

Kindergarten News
Reading:
At the end of kindergarten, kindergarten students should be reading at a DRA level 6/reading level
or above.
To achieve this goal read, read, read with your child!
Games help build Phonemic Awareness:
Play the “Say It Slowly” game. Say a word at a normal rate and then have your child say the same
word slowly, one sound at a time.
Play the “Rhyme It” game. Say a two-word rhyme (“cat” and “hat”) and ask your child to say a word
that rhymes with your words.
Play the “I Spy” game. After reading a book play “I Spy” with letters, words or sounds. Open to a
page and say “I Spy the letter____.” Or “I Spy the letter that makes the ____sound.” Or “I Spy
something that begins or ends with the sound___.”
Reading Comprehension:
Retelling stories in sequence with details.
After reading or listening to a story ask your child to orally describe, write or draw what happened at
the beginning of the story. When you feel that your child is ready for more ask him/her to tell what
happened at the end and lastly, what happened in the middle.
Writing:
At the end of kindergarten, kindergarten students should be able to write several sentences on a
single topic, with a beginning, middle and end.
To achieve this goal your child should keep and write in a home journal every day.
Math:
At the end of kindergarten, students should be able to recognize, and write numbers to 50. Count to
100 by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s. Count by 2’s to 20. Use a 100’s chart to help your child recognize the
numbers and number patterns.
We have been working on representing numbers in different ways. Ask your child to show you 3 or
more ways to make a number.
Technology:
Myon.com
I-Station
Activities to Build Fine Motor Skills:
Tweezer - pick up small objects
Garlic Press - place play doh in the garlic press and squeeze
Newspaper, cardboard, tissue paper – use your fingers and tear the paper

Reading
We have been learning about main idea and details in a story. We have also learned about
traits of a character; such as, being responsible, greedy, selfish, generous, etc. We just introduced biographies to the students. Within the biographies our focus is still finding the
main idea and details in the text. Starting on Oct 11 we will begin the Book It program.
Students will have a reading log in their homework folder where they can record their daily reading. Our first goal for them is to read for 15 min. a night. If they meet their goal
they will receive a coupon for a personal pan pizza at Pizza Hut.
Writing
We concluded an informational piece of writing. We will continue to
learn
different crafts students can use in their writing. Various crafts include specific details,
vivid verbs, and strong nouns.
Math
We have been
practicing several different strategies to help us with addition and
subtraction. For
example, students have learned about counting on, counting back,
drawing a picture to help solve a problem, and making a ten. The next topic that we will
be learning about is 2-D shapes.
Science
We just finished learning about properties of matter. Some of the properties
were: floating and sinking, temperature, color, size, and shape. Now we are learning about
pushes and pulls and gravity. Congratulations to the science Olympics winners for 1 st
grade. Liam’s aqua foil held the most marbles from Mrs. Osorio’s class. Petrunique was
the winner from Mrs. Moore’s class. Maliyah’s aqua foil held the most from Mrs. Timothies' class and she had the most of any other first grader. Maliyah will be representing Lomax at the Hillsborough County Science Olympics in November.
.
Reminders:
We will have a field trip on Oct. 12 to see a puppet show at Cyrus Greene.
There will be a field trip on Nov. 3 to the Glazer Museum.
The 1st 9 weeks awards program is Nov. 10.
The Great American Teach-In is Nov. 17. We would love to have you share
about your job! If you are interested in coming in please contact Ms. Maillet.

2nd Grade News!
What we are learning…
Math: In math students are working on adding
with multiple addends, making 10 to add, using doubles to add, and reviewing fact families.
Students can spend extra time practicing their
math facts with flash cards or by visiting
www.ABCya.com
Science: Students and teachers alike are anxiously awaiting Lomax’s Science Olympics
competition! Two representatives from each
class will compete in the grade-level competition. The second grader who engineers/flies the
furthest-flying airplane will go on to represent
Lomax in the upcoming district-wide competition at MOSI. We’re also excited about visiting United Skates on the 11th. This fun-filled
expedition is guaranteed to enrich each student’s understanding of Force & Motion. The
kids will also be working on classroom STEM
Fair projects this month!
Language Arts: In reading we will continue to
develop comprehension skills by responding to
a variety of texts. Students are required to cite
text evidence to support their answer. Other
important skills we are working on when we
write responses to questions is to include part
of the question in our response, to be specific,
and to write in complete sentences (capital letters, punctuation, spelling words from the text
correctly, and including supporting details).

child’s agenda nightly as this is
the best way to communicate
with teachers. Students should
also be writing down their
homework in their agenda.

Our 3rd grade students have been busy at work since day one!
We got the opportunity to go on an awesome field trip to the
Florida Aquarium and learn all about the ocean and the amazing creatures that inhabit it. In science, we also made solar ovens and used the power of the sun to cook some s'mores. It's
amazing how a little pizza box with some foil can heat up so
much and cook something fast!
In math, we have been hard at work learning all about
multiplication and division. You would be surprised how
many different ways there are to model multiplication!
We are also working hard to practice all of our multiplication math facts.
In reading, we have been reading several different genres
including historical fiction and informational texts. We have
been learning to compare two texts and identify text features in different types of genres.

GRADE 4 NEWS!!
Writing: We are now entering the "ESSAY ZONE". We are starting to write multi
-paragraph essays- Opinion and Informative. The district will be providing our
first formative assessment on October 13, 2016 , so we have been preparing
our students with writing essays by pulling evidence to support their ideas,
and writing with an introductory sentence for each paragraph.
Reading: Students are finding figurative language in their reading but also applying it in their writing. We are learning skills like
inference, main idea, and ways to find evidence to support their
answers.
Math is focusing on number sense and operations. Make sure to study your multiplication facts each night up until your 12s! This is very important as it will help you succeed in class! Remember you can always log into your Student Connection account from home to access your GoMath books, FASTT Math and several other resources that will help you in math! Homework is Monday through Thursday and students can bring home their books and journal filled with notes to study
Science is underway with science fair Mondays and our class study of motion
and speed. We have completed an LDC unit on building and testing a marshmallow flyer! Congratulations to Sherrodd Raines, Ray'Niya Neal, Gabby Gibson
and Jazmin Banuelas from Ms. Kerney's classes on having the longest flyer built!
Please make sure to study your vocabulary words each week to help you. Parents - please check your child's science fair timeline each week to check in with
them and see how they're doing. We discuss one part per Monday and the following Monday is when your child's part of the project is due. Handouts and examples are always given in class so your child knows exactly how to complete
their pieces! Contact Mrs. Williams and Ms. Kerney for any further questions or
assistance. Science Fair will be due in late November.

-Have a person of age escort the children
-Bring a good flashlight along
-Try to visit homes where you are familiar with the residents
-Inspect all of the Treats your kids bring home
-Please limit the amount of candy the kids eat
