letter to give to the teachers

“What the heart gives away is never lost. It is kept in the hearts of others.” Dear Caring Teacher, Our school is embarking on a meaningful, impactful and educational community service project called C hange of H eart, a program in support of Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services. You are invited to make change! Jacob’s Heart started 16 years ago when a kindergartener donated 41 cents to help a boy with cancer named Jacob. That 41 cents grew and now Jacob’s Heart has provided services to more than 530 local families whose children have cancer. Jacob’s Heart provides emotional, financial, expressive and practical support to the entire family when a child has cancer and keeps families strong and children smiling during long hospital stays. Jacob’s Heart is a lifeline to families in crisis. Our class can be the trendsetter to make change with their change. If, over the next 4 weeks, your class gathers $100 worth of change, your students can experience the joy that direct giving offers. Your students can give 10 families who have a child with cancer: ♥ $10 gas cards to help pay for gas to get to and from the hospital, or ♥ $10 grocery cards to help buy food for the brothers and sisters when a child with cancer is in the hospital. ♥ $10 Target cards so that children with cancer and their brothers and sisters can have a special gift for their birthday. If your class gathers $200 in change, they can make change for 20 families. A Here’s what you need to do to participate in C hange of H eart: ♥ Schedule a time for Jacob’s Heart volunteers to visit classes so that we can introduce the program to the students or show the video found at jacobsheart.org/change to explain the program to your class(es) and inspire the students to participate. (Contact info is below) ♥ Choose 3 or 4 student leaders to run the program for your class. ♥ Place the “Change of Heart” jar in the front of your classroom and remind the students every day to give their change to make change. It’s fun to have your classes guess how much is in the jar at the end of each week. ♥ Have your class(es) decorate a big, beautiful card for a child with cancer and their family. ♥ Jacob’s Heart volunteers will collect the change, purchase the gas, grocery and Target cards and deliver them to each family inside your classes decorated greeting card. (This means a lot to the children in the hospital and their families.) Here’s what your students will learn: ♥ Compassion and creative fundraising ♥ Giving even a small amount, you can make a big difference ♥ Estimation and multiplication (by guessing how much money is in the jar) ♥ Teamwork with their own class, other classes and other schools The class with the most change will be rewarded with a pizza party. Please contact us as soon as possible so that we can visit your class and bring jars for change, letters to send home to parents and any additional information you need. We are here to help make change! For more information email: [email protected] or call 831-‐724-‐9100. Thank you! 2007 Freedom Blvd. Freedom, CA 95019 – jacobsheart.org/change
