My favorite place to visit is the island my mother comes from. It’s not a very large
island but its beauty is being known far and wide. There are fir and pine trees everywhere
as well as other types of vegetation, as during the winter there is such a lot of
rainfall. The houses are traditional and made up of huge stones. The walls are very thick
in order as to keep the houses cool in summer and warm in winter. Cars cannot be
driven into certain areas because most villages have been narrow cobble-stoned streets.
There are many pretty fishing villages. The fishermen get up very early in the
morning to catch fish and sell them to the local people or tourists. Sometimes the fish
or other seafood such as octopus, they may still be alive. Tourists like to eat such
delicacies at the small restaurants in these fishing villages. Another nice place to
visit is Sunset Hill, where you can sit on the cliffs and watch the sun to disappear over the
horizon. There are many beaches where you can go for swimming but the nicest beaches
are the ones you can only get to by boat.

The flag of the United States is one of the oldest national standards in the world. No records give
precisely the name of the person who designed the original Stars and Stripes, but historians believe
Francis Hopkinson, one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence, probably modified the
unofficial continental flag into the design we now have. Hopkinson requested compensation from
Congress in 1780 for his design, but Congress denied it, saying that others had worked on the project
as well, including Betsy Ross who stitched the first official flag. Some believe she was responsible for
changing the stars from being six-pointed to five-pointed. That shape was easier for her to make.
Officially, the Stars and Stripes were born on 14 June 1777, two years to the day after the birth of the
Army. On that day, which is now the Flag Day, Congress decided that the flag of the United States be
13 stripes, alternate red and white, and that the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing
a new constellation. The colours on the flag are important. Red symbolises valour. Blue symbolises
justice. White symbolises purity.
According to some historians, the Stars and Stripes was first raised over Fort Stanwix, New York, on
3 August 1777. In the army version of the flag, the stars were arranged in a circle. When the next two
states (Vermont and Kentucky) joined the Union, the flag was modified so that there were 15 stars and
15 stripes. The flag inspired Francis Scott Key to compose the Star Spangled Banner, the US anthem,
and the flag became the national banner from 1795 until 1818.
In 1818, Congress realised that adding a stripe for each new state would soon spoil the appearance of
the flag. A law was passed, fixing the number of stripes at 13, and providing for the addition of a star
for each new state.
One of the most memorable flags is the one that flew over the Capitol in Washington on December
7, 1941 when Pearl Harbour was attacked by the Japanese. The very same flag was raised again on
December 8, when war was declared on Japan, and three days later at the time of the declaration of
war against Germany and Italy. President Roosevelt called it the ‘flag of liberation’ and carried it with
him to the Casablanca Conference and on other historic occasions. It flew from the mast of the USS
Missouri during the formal Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945.
Another historic flag is the one that flew over Pearl Harbour on December 7, 1941. It was also present
at the United Nations Charter meeting in San Francisco, California, and was used at the Big Three
Conference in Potsdam, Germany. This same flag flew over the White House on August 14, 1945,
when the Japanese accepted the terms of surrender.
The American flag is usually flown from sunrise to sunset; it can be flown at night but only if it is
properly lit. The only time the flag should be flown upside down is when used as a signal to call for
help. The US flag should not be dipped in salute to any person or thing. When the flag is too worn to
be flown, it should be disposed of in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
