Tim Malloy, Assistant Director (203) 645-8043 Rubenstein Pat Smith (212) 843-8026 FOR RELEASE: MAY 25, 2017 GOP HEALTH PLAN BACKERS COULD FEEL PAIN AT THE POLLS, QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY NATIONAL POLL FINDS; ONLY 20 PERCENT OF U.S. VOTERS SUPPORT PLAN Only 20 percent of American voters say they are more likely to vote for a Senator or member of Congress who supports the revised Republican health care plan, while 44 percent say they are less likely and 31 percent say this issue won’t affect their vote, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. American voters disapprove of the new health proposal 57 – 20 percent, compared to a 56 – 21 percent disapproval in a May 11 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-peack) University, shortly after the revised plan passed the House of Representatives. Republicans in the House cancelled a vote on the first attempt to “repeal and replace” Obamacare on March 23, the day a Quinnipiac University poll showed voters opposed the idea 56 – 17 percent. Among independent voters, a key bloc, only 17 percent are more likely to support an elected official who backs the health care plan, while 41 percent are less likely. Republicans are the only listed party, gender, education, age or racial group to support the health care plan, by a lackluster 42 – 24 percent, and the only group where more voters say they would support a candidate for reelection who backs the latest health care plan. “Advisory to Republicans who support the replacement for Obamacare: Backing this bill could be very hazardous to your political health,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. “What was heralded as a cure for a failing plan could have toxic side effects.” Under the Republican health care plan, their health insurance costs will go up, 44 percent of American voters say, while 12 percent say they will go down and 33 percent say they will stay the same. -more- Quinnipiac University Poll/May 25, 2017 – page 2 Fewer Americans will be covered under the GOP plan, 57 percent of voters say, while 11 percent say more will be covered and 21 percent say it will be about the same. Voters disapprove 62 – 32 percent of the way President Donald Trump is handling health care and say 50 – 45 percent that he should not support efforts to repeal Obamacare. Attitudes on Democrats, Republicans in Congress American voters disapprove 70 – 21 percent of the way Republicans in Congress are doing their job and disapprove 63 – 28 percent of the way Democrats in Congress are doing their job. Favorability ratings for congressional leaders are all negative: 27 – 54 percent for House Speaker Paul Ryan; 30 – 50 percent for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi; 15 – 47 percent for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell; 29 – 34 percent for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Trump and the Media American voters disapprove 57 – 39 percent of the way the media covers President Trump, and disapprove 62 – 35 percent of the way Trump talks about the media. Voters trust the media more than Trump, 53 – 34 percent, to tell the truth about important issues. A total of 86 percent of voters, including 69 percent of Republicans, say it is “very important” or “somewhat important” that the media hold public officials accountable. Trump and his administration make statements without evidence to support them “very often,” 50 percent of voters say, while 22 percent say, “somewhat often.” From May 17 – 23, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,404 voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points, including the design effect. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and the nation as a public service and for research.
