Were the factors preventing the applicant from completing the program within the usual program length
unanticipated and beyond the applicant’s control? (See examples below)
Was the amount of outstanding work required minimal, and were all degree requirements completed and
recorded on ROSI prior to the relevant SGS deadline(s)?
Was funding already provided to the applicant during the final session of registration (e.g. fellowships,
scholarships, OSAP, TA/RA-ships)?
Has the applicant met all other eligibility requirements?
Examples of ELIGIBLE reasons for completion beyond program length:
•
•
Student was hospitalized for a significant amount of time, delaying course/research work but remained
registered full-time.
Equipment for research experiment was damaged or faulty and took significant amount of time to be
fixed/replaced due to no fault of the student.
Examples of INELIGIBLE reasons for delay:
•
•
•
•
Longer than anticipated time for experiments and data collection are considered part of program experience;
REVISIONS to experiments: revisions to experiments are not considered unexpected events and are
considered an expected and foreseeable component of research;
REVISIONS to thesis/research paper: requests for edits and revisions from your Supervisor and/or thesis
committee are not considered unexpected events but an expected and foreseeable component of the paper
writing process and should be taken into account from the outset of your research;
Longer than anticipated time for scheduling committee meetings and defense date: Students are expected
to organize committee meeting dates and/or final thesis dates well in advance (e.g. minimum 6-8 weeks) of
expected meeting and/or final thesis examination dates.
