Lesson 7.44
Add-on Lessons
2016 World Series Champions
Using the Order of Operations
Overview
A simple formula is a mathematical expression with only one
operator, such as addition. A complex formula has more than one
mathematical operator. When there is more than one operation,
spreadsheets will calculate formulas based on the following order
of operations: operations enclosed in parentheses, exponential
calculations, multiplication and division (whichever comes
first), then addition and subtraction (whichever comes first). It is
especially important to enter complex formulas using the correct
order of operations; otherwise, the spreadsheet software will not
calculate the results accurately. Parentheses are the best way to
define which calculations should be performed first.
In this lesson, you will use formulas
to compute baseball statistics for the
216 World Series Champions.
New Skills / TEKS
Creating Complex Formulas
TEKS: 11.A.iii
Instructions
1.
Create a new spreadsheet.
2.
Use the default font and size of the spreadsheet software being used.
3.
Type the data as shown in Figure 7.44-A.
4. Resize all columns so that all data is displayed.
5. Save the spreadsheet as CHICAGO CUBS .
6. Bold cell A1 and change the font size to 14 point.
7.
Bold rows 3, 23, 25, and 38.
8. Underline cells A3−K3 and B25−I25.
9. In cell F5, compute the Batting Average (AVG) by typing the formula =E5/D5.
10. Use the AutoFill feature to copy the Batting Average (AVG) formula in column F down to cell F21.
11. Format cells F5−F21 as numbers displaying 3 decimal places.
12. In cell G26, compute the Earned Run Average (ERA) by typing the formula =F26/E26*9.
13. Use the AutoFill feature to copy the Earned Run Average (ERA) formula in column G down to cell G36.

14. Format cells G26−G36 as numbers displaying 2 decimal places.
15. In cell C23, compute the total number of games played by typing the formula =SUM(C5:C21).
16. Use the AutoFill feature to copy the Totals formula in cell C23 across to cells D23−K23.
17. In cell B38, compute the total number of wins by typing the formula =SUM(B26:B36).
18. Use the AutoFill feature to copy the Totals formula in cell B38 across to cells C38−I38.
19. In cell F23, delete the formula and compute the Total of the Batting Average (AVG) by typing the
formula =E23/D23.
20. Format cell F23 as numbers displaying 3 decimal places.
21. In cell G38, delete the formula and compute the Total ERA by typing the formula =F38/E38*9.
22. Format cell G38 as a number displaying 2 decimal places.
23. Center align cells B3−K38.
24. Adjust the page scaling to fit to one page.
25. Carefully proofread your work for accuracy.
26. Be sure any changes have been saved.
27. Print preview and be sure that all cells containing data will be included in printing. Adjust the print area
if necessary.
28. Print a copy of the spreadsheet if required by your instructor.
