Early Civilizations in the Americas - What happened?
GRADE LEVEL(S);

TIME ALLOTMENT:
90 minutes a day over 2 days
OVERVIEW:
Students will see two videos of past civilizations and compare the two;
discussing the differences between then and now
SUBJECT MATTER:
History - World History (Post- Classical and Medieval Civilizations)
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
To Analyze the factors that led to the emergence and expansion of the
multi-ethnic Aztec and Inca empires in the Americas. (Post- Classical and
Medieval Civilizations and Expanding Zones of Exchange: 600-1450)
STANDARDS:
MN State Standards for 9th Grade History
Hemispheric networks intensified as a result of innovations in agriculture,
trade across longer distances, the consolidation of belief systems and the
development of new multi-ethnic empires while diseases and climate

List of words to be defined and then observed during the movies
PREP FOR TEACHERS:
Login to Worldbook online and Google Earth.
List the words on the board that students will need to find examples of in
each video
Students will use plain paper and a pencil to make a T-chart (see below)
Print the Venn Diagram (see below) and use a document camera with
markers so students can write on the paper
LCD projector will be used
INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY - SETTING THE STAGE : MATERIALS:
(remember to number each step)
1. Bring up an electronic map of the Americas 600-1450 from online
World Book Encyclopedia
2. Google earth could be used too, so students can see the location and
terrain of these cultures
3. List of words written on the board to discuss before viewing videosthese words are:

LEARNING ACTIVITIES: MATERIALS:
1. Students will make a T-chart. The Incas on one side and the Aztecs on
the other.

3. Viewing each video, they will list what they see from the word list;
noting things about geography, dates of empire habitations and
expansions, engineering feats, type of art work done, history of the
empire, the culture (people), archeological evidence and religious
practices
4. These T-charts will be collected and graded. Students will receive one
point for each entry of each word, for each group for a total of 16
points

This activity is related to math, art and Spanish language classes.
Collaboration with these teachers can be explored as part of a bigger
project

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS:
Spanish language classes take a trip every 2 years to Mexico. This activity
could prepare students for the upcoming trip.
Community members with a Mexican heritage can speak about their
connections to the past and how that affects their culture today.
