Extended Essay - Commack Schools

 Extended Essay Timeline
Extended Essay Coordinator: Mr. Michael Jeziorski
The Extended Essay (EE) is a 4,000 word research paper required by all International Baccalaureate diploma
candidates. The EE offers diploma candidates the opportunity to investigate a topic of special interest and
acquaints students with the independent research and writing skills expected at the college level. In other
words, the extended essay is an in-depth study of a limited topic within a selected subject area.
Below is the EE timeline that all diploma candidates are expected to follow. It is the responsibility of the
student to periodically check the timeline for up and coming due dates.
Junior Year
February Students will be introduced to the Extended Essay in their Theory of Knowledge (TOK) class. The Extended Essay Coordinator will visit all 11th grade TOK classes. Early March Students will find a professional within the district to serve as their mentor. To validate this, the students must submit their “Mentor’s Signature Form.” Late March Students must complete the Extended Essay worksheet found on ManageBac. Late March – Early April TOK classes will spend time in the High School library conducting research on their Extended Essay topic. Students must submit their “Library Research Form.” Mid April Students will have a formal meeting with their mentor to discuss the subject area criteria and to create a 1‐2 page outline of the Extended Essay. This outline will be uploaded to ManageBac. Early May Students will have a second formal meeting with their mentor to receive professional feedback on the first 2 pages of their Extended Essay. Early June Students will submit a 5‐page rough draft of their Extended Essay to ManageBac. Late August Students may attend a two‐day Extended Essay workshop held in the Commack High School library. This is optional, but highly recommended. Senior Year
September Students will submit a completed rough draft of their Extended Essay to ManageBac. October November Students will upload their Extended Essay to www.turnitin.com through ManageBac. Once this is completed, students will meet with their mentor to make all final formatting and citation adjustments. Students will submit a final copy of their Extended Essay to ManageBac and to the Extended Essay Coordinator to be submitted and graded by the IBO. If any changes are made to the EE calendar, students will be informed via email and through their TOK classes. If you
have any questions pertaining to the EE, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].
