April 2014 - Ridgewood Community High School

Issue: Easter 2014
Time to Shop
The Community Group have had a busy term with many
outings. As fun as these outings appear, there was a lot of
learning involved! As part of the ASDAN Early Milestones
“Towards Independence” the class have been visiting
various indoor and outdoor markets. The staff took the
students to indoor shopping centres such as ASDA and
Tesco in Burnley and Rossendale and also markets such as
Todmorden outdoor market. Whilst at the locations the
pupils enjoyed a full sensory and learning experience!
Before they set off, the students created a shopping list.
The list included items for their own snackbox and a list of
items needed to use in the Life Skills Kitchen on Friday.
Using a picture shopping list, the students located their
intended items around the store, counted the items as they
put them onto the conveyer, and handled the money
paying the cashier. The staff were please at how well the
students learned to adapt to the different lay outs of the
different markets. If you desire to know more, talk to
Joseph or Corey who are very keen to give more details of
the experiences their class have had, they would love to tell
you!!

From March 3rd to March 5th five pupils from Ridgewood CHS’s
Community Group attended a residential at Hothersall Lodge. The
students (aged 15-18) loved all the activities, finding them all new
and exciting. Hothersall Lodge is located in a beautiful little corner
of the Ribble Valley. They are equipped with their own climbing
wall and lake for water activities. The pupils enjoyed picnicking
and playing on the lovely grounds. Along with many walks around
the grounds, they also walked around the Valley
and even walked up Beacon Fell! They were so
relieved when they reached the summit. The
group all experienced the climbing wall, a
campfire, and had fun on the zipwire. The lake
came in very handy when the group went
canoeing for the first time. Luckily no one fell in
while playing games in the canoe. A big thanks
and well done to all the staff at Hothersall Lodge and to the
Community Group staff for arranging the fun times.

Sing to Victory!!
th
On Friday 7 March our very own “Why Try?”
Choir took part in a singing festival and
competition held at Sir Thomas Whitham Campus
in Burnley. We were joined by other Burnley
schools. Two primary schools sang first; they were
unbelievably talented. We had to accomplish a
score of 83 points or more; Ridgewood’s choir
achieved 85 points! Mr Bridges and Miss Tullet
were so proud of our progress that when we
returned to school we performed for the whole
school during assembly. The song that put us on
the road to victory was “A Thousand Miles” by
Vanessa Carton. The choir singers would like to
say Thank You to the staff for entering us and for
all the hard work you have put us through!

Editors Note:
Firstly, I must say welcome and thank you to our newest
member of the editorial team, Katie D. She has proven herself an asset, just as
the boys, to our team. I was very impressed with the team, the end of term is
a big issue to get out. They exceeded themselves from their interview
questions, research skills and writing of articles. Thank you also to Matthew R.
and Niall N. for their artistic additions, it really glams up our paper.

7G Celebrate World Book Day!
On 10th March class 7G visited WH Smith in
Burnley town centre. As part of celebrating
World Book Day each pupil received a £1
token to spend on books. The class went to
spend their book day
tokens and managed to
buy a book for each pupil
as well as some books for
class leisure time.
They
had a lovely morning in
the sunshine after finding
their books, too.

“Why Try?” Choir—Something New
Miss Nicholson, a member of an Adult Choir, has
started visiting our school on a Thursday to
encourage all members of our “Why Try?” Choir
to sing with confidence, enthusiasm and
movement. She has taught us songs from all
around the world that have a lot of enthusiasm
and movement. She has, also, heard a couple
of our songs and was VERY impressed. Sadly
Miss Nicholson only got to visit us until Easter
break. Such a same, we really enjoyed her
company!

KS4
A group of our fab swimming stars were
chosen to represent school in the annual
All the Ridgewood Swimmers with their certificates
swimming gala in Lancaster on
and awards in assembly.
Wednesday 19th March. We were up
against other talented swimmers from different schools and we saw a great dance to the song
“Together”” featured in High School Musical from Our Lady’s Catholic School—Ridgewood
students were on their feet! As each Ridgewood participant swam, we were cheered on by
our school. We also showed our support to other challengers, cheering on the other schools.
Ridgewood cheered loud as we collected our medals. We were all proud of our progress and
all the hard work we put in, even though the water was really salty. Thank you staff for
choosing us and for all your support.
This last week of term there are currently 26
Daffodils
KS4 pupils attending a week long residential.
They will be enjoying the wonders of Lake
Coniston in the Lake District. They may be
climbing, hiking, canoeing, trying out the
sailboats, going for a leisurely ride on the
catamaran. However, there will be more to
follow in the next issue as the pupils will have
much to report to the news team.
Duke of Edinburgh Awards
On Wednesday 26th February a group of Year 11 students
went to Turf Moor in the evening for the Duke of
Edinburgh Award Ceremony. We were joined by our
Ridgewood Staff to accept our Bronze Awards and we
even saw some other Ridgewood leavers there to accept
their Silver Awards. We also got to see many other
people our age from other schools and clubs around
Burnley accept their Bronze or Silver Awards.
We had our awards presented to us by Mr Matthew
Hargreaves and Ms Pam Sleigh, operation officer for Duke
of Edinburgh in the Northwest. The Year 11’s were so
pleased when they received their awards, standing in
front of all their peers and shaking hands with Ms Sleigh.
The Ridgewood staff were so proud of all the hard work
the pupils put into their Duke of Edinburgh.

The students of FE4 have been growing and selling
daffodils for £2.00 to raise funds for FE horticulture
equipment and they have certainly brightened up
the main entrance where they were for sale. Daffodils
are native to Europe, Northern Africa and Asia. In
the Western part of the world, the daffodil is a
symbol of vanity. While in the East, it is a symbol of
wealth and good fortune.
The daffodil is the national flower of Wales, where it
is traditional to wear a daffodil or leek on St David’s
Day. American, New Zealand, Australian and Irish
cancer charities use a daffodil as their emblem.
Years
7, 8 and 9 pupils went on a music
trip to Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall to see the
famous Halle Orchestra, who played some music
from the years of WW1, to mark this war’s centenary
year. We had an amazing time, and we were even
given some scratch cards which enabled us to smell
the smoke, mud, army rations and ginger beer. We
all had lunch together outside the orchestral hall,
and then set off back to Ridgewood afterwards.

Mr Shy
By: Lee
Mr Shy didn’t like
looking at people. He
would close his eyes
and didn’t want to look
at anyone. Mr Shy
was scared every time he had to meet
someone new. Mr Shy woke up one
day and decided that he was going to
be brave and look at someone. Mr
Shy went to Mr Happy’s house and
knocked on the door and Mr Happy
answered. ‘Hello, I have come to look
at you’ said Mr Shy. ‘Would you like to
come in for a cup of tea?’ Mr Happy
asked. ‘Yes please’ said Mr Shy. Mr
Happy and Mr Shy had a cup of tea
and a lovely chat.
Mr Shy said
goodbye to Mr Happy and walked
home. On his way home he looked at
everyone and said hello.
