“Marine Careers: So You Want to be a Marine Biologist?” 2014 SUMMER PROGRAM Grades 5-8 DAY 1, MONDAY 12:30 pm – 5:00 pm Dive Into a Career in Marine Science From underwater photographer to great white shark tagger, there are many exciting careers for those that love the ocean and want to protect it. Today we will be exploring Mote Marine Aquarium to meet some scuba divers and explore some underwater jobs. Wear: Comfortable and lightweight clothes, closed toe and heel shoes, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen Bring: Closed-top sports bottle filled with drinking water, extra sunscreen, towel, lightweight long sleeve shirt. Full Day Campers: remember to bring a lunch! DAY 2, TUESDAY 12:30 pm – 5:00 pm You to the Rescue! Have you ever wanted to help save sea animals? Today we will be visiting the Marine Mammal Center and simulating some of the work of Mote’s veterinarian staff, stranding, and rescue teams to find out what it takes to care for these animals. Wear: Comfortable and lightweight clothes, closed toe and heel shoes, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen Bring: Closed-top sports bottle filled with drinking water, extra sunscreen, towel, lightweight long sleeve shirt. Full Day Campers: remember to bring a lunch! DAY 3, WEDNESDAY 12:30 pm – 5:00 pm Out in the Field Mote Marine Laboratory was founded in 1955 as a shark research facility and has since branched into many areas of marine research, from coral reefs to red tide. Today we will be going out into Sarasota Bay to practice some of Mote’s break through marine science research and answer the question “What’s in the Bay Today?” Wear: Bathing suit under clothes, comfortable and lightweight clothes, closed toe and heel shoes, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen Bring: Snorkel, mask, fins, towel, closed-top sports bottle filled with drinking water, water shoes (must have durable soles, closed toe and heel), extra sunscreen, complete set of extra clothes, lightweight long sleeve shirt. Full Day Campers: remember to bring a lunch! DAY 4, THURSDAY 12:30 pm – 5:00 pm Aquarist for a Day What does it take to care for all the fish in the Aquarium? Today we will be living the life of the people that take care of our animals in Mote Aquarium, the aquarists. You will experience feeding, checking water quality and checking for health problems. The fish will thank you! Wear: Comfortable and lightweight clothes, closed toe and heel shoes, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen Bring: Closed-top sports bottle filled with drinking water, extra sunscreen, towel, lightweight long sleeve shirt. Full Day Campers: remember to bring a lunch! DAY 5, FRIDAY 12:30 pm – 5:00 pm Sit Manatee Sit…Good Manatee How can we talk about marine science careers without talking about training! Today we will learn what sets Mote apart from other marine mammal training facilities, get to experience some training sessions with our resident manatees dolphin, and/or sea turtles and even get to do some hands on training of your own. You will be training your little brother or sister before you know it! Wear: Comfortable and lightweight clothes, closed toe and heel shoes, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen Bring: Closed-top sports bottle filled with drinking water, extra sunscreen, towel, lightweight long sleeve shirt. Full Day Campers: remember to bring a lunch! Important Parent/Guardian Notes: 1. Your child must be signed in and out when dropping off/picking up every day by a parent/guardian. 2. All items listed above to be brought/worn to camp are REQUIRED. Failure to follow these directions will affect your child’s participation in camp activities. Please label everything (including snorkel gear) with your child’s first and last name, and place in one overall bag. 3. Each child must bring a closed-top, filled water bottle every day. There will be several water breaks throughout the day. A light snack will be provided mid-morning. Please do not bring extra food. 4. Students will be rotated through stations throughout camp: Aquarium/Goldstein Marine Mammal Center, our Classroom, and outdoors. Please dress them in comfortable, lightweight clothes and closed toe and heel shoes. NO flip flops or sandals; tennis shoes are recommended. Please put sunscreen on your child before coming to camp and send extra with your child. Hat and sunglasses are recommended every day. 5. Please arrive and pick up promptly. Camp starts promptly at 8:30 a.m. Please arrive no earlier than 8:15 a.m. and no later than 8:30 a.m. An additional charge of $15 for every 30 minutes, or fraction thereof, will be assessed for late pick up. If you have a camper(s) in aftercare, pick up will be at 2:30 p.m. in the MERC building. Mote Marine Laboratory reserves the right to modify the above schedule.
