Champagne’s Happy Highlights September 22-26, 2014 Spelling: contractions: I'm, it's, he's, who's, she's, I'll, haven't, didn't, can't, isn't, aren't, hadn't, won't. Your children should memorize the following: Contractions are short ways of writing words. Learn these rules: Contractions with has, have, or had as the 2nd word -"Ha!" it's easy! Drop the "ha" add an apostrophe and you're done! we have= we've, etc. Contractions with "will" as 2nd word, drop the "wi" and you're done! I will= I'll, etc. Contractions with "not" as the 2nd word, drop "not" and put apostrophe in it's place. is not=isn't, etc. Rule breaker: cannot-drop the "no" then put apostrophe. cannot=can't. Contractions with a short word as the 2nd word, drop the weak vowel and put apostrophe in its' place. examples: I am=I'm, let us=let's, is it=it's, etc. Contractions with "would" as 2nd word, drop everything but the "d" add apostrophe and you're done: I would= I'd, she would=she'd, etc. Usually with contractions the first word doesn't change, but unfortunately with phonics there are always some rule breakers: will not=won't. Contractions will be on the Terra Nova. We will go over these a lot during the year. Have your child sing the contraction song in their poetry binder to easily learn the contraction rules. :) Math: The class will take a chapter 4 quiz on graphs on Tuesday. In chapter 5 we will: review counting on to find sums; explore doubles and doubles-plus one facts; use the make a ten strategy to find sums to 18; use strategies to find the sum of three addends; use the problem solving strategy "draw a picture" to solve problems. When I was a kid and maybe when you were a kid, we were just "taught" addition facts to memorize. Children today are taught strategies to help them solve problems. It makes them active learners and trains their brains to problem solve and look for patterns. Once we have totally finished learning all addition and subtractions strategies, I will then ask you to begin using flashcards to help your child master the facts. Knowing strategies will help them memorize their facts much more quickly. Social Living: Geography of the world and the Americas. Reading: This week's story is called Abraham Lincoln.
