John 11:43-44 (nRSV) RoMAnS 8:31-34 (kJV) When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 33Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. 34Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 43 11:00 A.M. MINISTER: At times, because of our lack of knowledge and understanding, we find ourselves separated from our sisters and brothers with serious mental illness and substance abuse, as well as their families. We pray that God will help us all dispel ignorance and misinformation about substance abuse and serious mental illnesses, such as major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder. ALL: We acknowledge that we are often uninformed about these issues and how they impact persons and their families. MINISTER: We pray that the cloud of stigma, labels, exclusion, and marginalization might be dispelled for the sake of those touched by mental illness and substance abuse. We pray that we may be containers of hope for persons and families living with mental health challenges. We pray also for better treatment, for steadier recovery, and for greater opportunity to work and serve. ALL: We pray that troubled minds and hearts, and broken lives and relationships might be healed. MINISTER: O God, we seek the power of Your Spirit; that we may live in fuller union with You, ourselves, and those living with mental health issues. Grant that we may gain courage to love and understand each other, as You love and understand us. ALL: We live with gratitude for compassionate and dedicated caregivers and mental health professionals, for new discoveries in brain research, and better medications. Amen. After a bit of research and calls to the corporate office, the stores slated for closure across the country (which number 200) are apparently underperforming, and have been, to the point that the decisions were made possibly as early as last year. In Washington Heights, a community staple like Walgreens where folks shop for goods ranging from medicine to milk, this is a potentially devastating situation for a neighborhood already designated a “food desert” where lack of access to healthy fruits and vegetables is pronounced. Like in most food desert communities, preventable diseases (diabetes, hypertension, heart disease) in Washington Heights run rampant. It only heightens the public health issues faced by our very large senior population and exacerbates an already blighted 95th Street Commercial Corridor. Economically, it greatly underscores the lack of opportunity in Black neighborhoods, forcing families to make extremely difficult choices, often resulting in the growth and expansion of dollar stores. When a national chain leaves our neighborhoods to consolidate, that means (without our input) a decision was made about our community. The core mission of the Endeleo Institute is to strengthen existing assets in the Washington Heights community. As such, the Carter G. Woodson Regional Library (located just across the street from Walgreens) was the first salvo in revitalizing the asset that is our commercial retail corridor. In this store closing, we definitely see a silver lining. This is a community leadership opportunity to campaign for a high quality grocery store/coffee shop to anchor that high traffic corner. Then, in 2017 with the library project completed, Washington Heights’ residents can point to 95th and Halsted as the cornerstone of a Black-owned, community co-op store. Let’s fill this prescription ourselves. •Endeleo is Progress, Growth and Development• www.endeleoinstitute.org Youth Revival Sunday • July 31, 2016 ©2016 Trinity United Church of Christ. The store closures are most disturbing, particularly because they seem to be occurring in mostly African American neighborhoods. For example, stores in Chatham and Roseland have closed recently and the latest is the 95th Street and Halsted store in our own Washington Heights community. Indeed, the sign on the sliding door notifying customers (August 11th) is quite a shock. There is no law against these things! Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT) January – Love He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27 (NRSV) February – Joy Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy good food and sweet drinks. Send some to people who have none, because today is a holy day to the Lord. Don’t be sad, because the joy of the Lord will make you strong.” Nehemiah 8:10 (NCV) March – Peace Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9 (NIV) April – Patience Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord! Psalm 27:14 (NKJV) May – kindness “This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other. Zechariah 7:9-10 (NLT) June – Goodness Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. James 3:13-14 (NIV) July – Faithfulness Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 (NLT) August – Gentleness By the humility and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul, who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world. For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 2 Corinthians 10:1-3 (NIV) September – Self Control So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. 1 Peter 1:13-14 (NLT) october – Forgive one Another Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31-32 (NLT) november – Service one Another My brothers and sisters, God called you to be free, but do not use your freedom as an excuse to do what pleases your sinful self. Serve each other with love. Galatians 5:13 (NCV) December – Build Up one Another So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NLT) Friday, August 26, 2016 4:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (Gates open at 4:00 p.m.) Musical Guests include: Corey Henry • The Blue Note Gospel Band • Roxanne Stevenson and the Chicago State Community Jazz Band • Frank Russell • Yvonne Stroud The Edwin Daugherty Sextet: Chicago Legends (Featuring the music of Gene Ammons • Johnny Griffin • Eddie Harris) Tickets AVAILABLE FOLLOWING ALL WORSHIP SERVICES SUNDAYS, JULY 31; AUGUST 7, 14, AND 21!
