Nematodes feed on turf root systems causing stunting and
lesions which provide an easy entrance point for bacteria and
fungi. Nematode damage can cause yellowing symptoms and
reduce growth and vigor of turf grasses.

The BioSafe Systems program for nematode/disease reduction
is a tank mix of ZeroTol® 2.0 and AzaGuard®. ZeroTol 2.0 is a
broad spectrum bactericide/fungicide with proven efficacy
against Pythium and Phytophthora. AzaGuard is a multi-mode of
action nematicide that stops feeding, egg laying, and is effective
as an insect growth regulator. Together, the two chemistries have
been proven to be an effective tank mix drench application.

In 2013 BioSafe Systems conducted trials at two separate golf courses in central and
southwestern Florida. These trials tested the reduction of nematodes on a total of 6 test plots;
each test plot is one green.
Golf Course 1 treated 3 greens and applied 3 applications, 21 days apart. Golf Course 1 applied
2 gallons of ZeroTol 2.0 per acre and 19 oz. of AzaGuard per acre.* Before using the BioSafe
Systems Nematode Reduction Program, the greens were receding at a fast rate and after the
second application the receding had stopped. By the third application the greens started to
come back. Before the program these greens also had Pythium issues and now
do not.
Table 1 shows the total nematode counts before and after treatment with ZeroTol 2.0 and
AzaGuard tank mixed of Golf Course 1. Results show an overall reduction of 88% nematodes
and notice how the Sting Nematodes were completely eradicated. The superintendent
preferred the BioSafe Systems program and overall noticed healthier, greener greens. The
superintendent was glad to see the receding and disease gone from his greens and is confident
the greens would recover fully. He also realized the BioSafe Systems program was more
cost effective.

Golf Course 2 treated 3 greens and applied 4 applications of the ZeroTol 2.0 and AzaGuard tank
mix, 7 days apart. Golf Course 2 applied 0.5 oz. of AzaGuard per 1,000 sq. ft. in each application
but used four different rates of ZeroTol 2.0; 6.5 oz., 9.0 oz., 12.0 oz. and 9.0 oz. per 1,000 sq. ft.*
They treated two greens with the BioSafe Systems Nematode Reduction Program and the third
green was split in half, and treated with the BioSafe Systems Nematode Reduction Program and
MultiGuard®.
Table 2 shows the total nematode count reduction by species of 3 test plots at Golf Course 2.
Notice on Test Plot 2 (TP2) the Lance Nematode was nonexistent after treatment and on Test
Plots 1 (TP1) and 3 (TP3) the Sting Nematode count was brought down to zero. Each of the
greens had significant nematode reduction after treatment with the tank mix of ZeroTol 2.0 and
AzaGuard. The superintendent was happy with the results from the BioSafe Systems program
because it showed the most consistent efficacy and it was the most cost effective program.
