hris Gonzalez played
fast pitch softball at
the Eagle’s Nest ball
field in the Argentine
community of Kansas City,
Kansas when he was a young
child. He has never forgotten
those days of scraping his
cleats on the dirt and sand, the
feel of the bat in his hands as
he swung and connected with
the ball, racing around the
bases and sliding into home.
The softball days of summer
memories are fresh in his mind
as if it just happened yesterday.

For many of these HSF recipients, each have a story to tell. “The scholarship lessened the burden
of tuition and worrying about how I was going to pay for school. I was the first person in my family
to go to college, so I was navigating it on my own and paid for it myself. Knowing I had that support
from the Hispanic Media Association and HDF meant I could focus on school and getting the most
out of college,” said Sarah Plake (blue top) reporter for KSHB Channel 41.

Changing a student’s
life forever

For over 30 years, the
Hispanic Development
Fund (HDF) has been
helping area students
with scholarships. From
the beginning, HDF
focused on a critical
need that emanated
directly
from
the
community: developing
a scholarship program
to empower Hispanic
students to attend and
graduate from college.
It was also considered
important from … to
make this a communitywide effort relying on
other Latino nonprofits
to assist with the review
of applications and
pooling of resources.”
Though the scholarship
fund
has
had
a
tremendous impact in
the Hispanic community,
one thing it has not
been able to stem is
the need generated by
the growing number
of
students
seeking
assistance. To mitigate
that pressure, a new
6-week
crowdfunding
initiative called Cambio
para
Cambio
was
introduced last month
at a reception of former
scholarship recipients.
Kristin
Littrell,
of
Communications
Consulting and one of
the organizers of the
new initiative, reference
the need. “This year,
we
received
more
scholarship applications
than ever before - a
27% increase! We know
our work is making a
difference,
because
Hispanic students tell us
so every day. Most of our
scholarship
recipients
are
first-generation
college students, and
receiving a college
scholarship is truly lifechanging for them.” “Through
the

campaign, we hope
to
empower
our
scholarship alumni and
friends to work together
to raise money for the
next
generation
of
scholarship recipients.
The
Cambio
para
Cambio campaign will
run for six weeks, ending
at the HDF Scholarship
Program
Awards
Ceremony on June 5.
All money raised will go
to the HDF Scholarship
Program to award even
more scholarships to
deserving, hardworking
Hispanic students from
the KC area.”
The scholarships are
familiar to many as the
Hispanic
Scholarship
Fund (HSF). Sandra
Olivas was one of those
students awarded a HSF
scholarship.
“I was raised in
the heart of KCK in a
wonderfully
diverse
neighborhood
called
Argentine. Both of my
parents punched their
timecard
everyday
working hard in local
factories to support our
family. They encouraged
me to study and prepare
for college not knowing
where the money would
come from to pay the
tuition,” she recalled.
Olivas remembers the
joy and concern that
came when she received
her acceptance letter
from KU. “The cost was
daunting for my family,
but when I applied for
the Hispanic Scholarship
Fund
and
received
the scholarship award
along with matching
dollars from KU; my
dream seemed possible
and within reach.”
Olivas
made
it
through college with
monthly
contributions
from her parents, which
helped pay her dorm
costs. She augmented
the scholarship and that
assistance with two part
time jobs, “making ice
cream cones at Dairy
Queen and serving up
breakfast at Country
Kitchen to cover books
and the rest of the bills.
“I still remember my
mom bragging to her
friends on the phone
that I had received the
Hispanic Development
Fund Scholarship. I will
never forget how the
awards ceremony was
such a proud moment
for our whole family,”
she said.
Randy Lopez is also
a former scholarship
recipient and along
with Olivas, made a
personal appeal to those
attending the kick-off
event,
“This year unfortunately we didn’t have as
many funds as we have
had in the past. … Even

number of applicants
this year we have also
had to turn down a
lot of students that we
were not able to award
scholarships to because
of a lack of donors and
donations. … That is
where we as individuals
and community come
in.”
Lopez
talked
of
the importance of a
scholarship that comes
from the community.
“When I received the
scholarship, sure it does
not cover everything but
knowing that there is a
Latino community in my
backyard that is going
out there and raising
funds for me to go to
school is an amazing
feeling.”
He told the former
scholarship
recipients
that they are now part
of that of pool of people
that will help make the
dreams of other students
a reality.
“We are here because
we benefited from this
scholarship at one point
and now it is … our time
as a community to give
back and invest in our
students, our community
and our future,” he said.
Olivas
encouraged
the attendees to reach
out to the networks they
have developed over the
years. “I love this quote
from Mother Teresa, ‘It is
not how much you give,
it is how much love you
put into giving. … Every
dollar matters. Every
dollar counts.”
Each of the attendees
received a package
and email with links to
a Network for Good
website that will help
them set up their own
appeal
page.
The
participants are tasked
with generating at least
ten dollar donations
from at least ten people
in their networks. A
minimum goal for the sixweek appeal is $5,000.

the name of the Hispanic
Media
Association.
The association has
been donating to the
scholarship
fund for
years… with a priority
on students working in
journalism or media.

los días, trabajando duro
en las fábricas locales
para apoyar a nuestra
familia. Me animaron a
estudiar y prepararme
para la universidad sin
saber de dónde vendría
el dinero para pagar la
matrícula”, recordó.
Olivas recuerda la
alegría y preocupación
que tuvo cuando recibió
su carta de aceptación
de KU. “El costo fue
desalentador para mi
familia, pero cuando
solicité
al
Fondo
Hispano de Becas y
recibí el premio de la
beca junto con el dinero
correspondiente
de
KU; mi sueño parecía
posible y al alcance de
la mano”.
Olivas
pasó
por
la
universidad
con
contribuciones
mensuales de sus padres,
lo que ayudó a pagar los
costos de su residencia.
Aumentó la beca y esa
ayuda con dos empleos
a
tiempo
parcial,
“haciendo conos de
helado en Dairy Queen
y sirviendo desayunos
en Country Kitchen para
cubrir los gastos para los
libros y el resto de las
facturas.
“Todavía recuerdo a
mi mamá alardeando
con sus amigas por
teléfono acerca que yo
había recibido la Beca
del Fondo de Desarrollo
Hispano. Nunca olvidaré
cómo fue la ceremonia de
premiación, un momento
tan orgulloso para toda
nuestra familia”, dijo.
Randy López también
es un ex becario y, junto
con Olivas, hizo un
llamamiento personal a
los asistentes al evento
de lanzamiento.
“Este
año,
por
desgracia, no tuvimos
tantos fondos como
los que hemos tenido
en el pasado. Aunque
hemos tenido un número
récord de solicitantes
este año, también hemos
tenido que rechazar
a muchos estudiantes
a los que no pudimos
conceder becas debido
a la falta de donantes
y donaciones. Aquí es
donde
participamos
como
individuos
y
comunidad”.
López habló de la
importancia de una
beca que viene de la
comunidad.
“Cuando
recibí la beca, es cierto
que no cubre todo, pero
el saber que hay una
comunidad latina en mi
patio trasero, que está
saliendo y recaudando

fondos para que yo
vaya a la escuela es una
sensación increíble”.
Él dijo a los ex becarios,
que ahora son parte
del grupo de personas
que ayudarán a hacer
realidad los sueños de
otros estudiantes.
“Estamos aquí porque
nos hemos beneficiado
de esta beca en su
momento y ahora es
nuestro turno, como
comunidad, de retribuir
e invertir en nuestros
estudiantes,
nuestra
comunidad y nuestro
futuro”, dijo.
Olivas animó a los

“This was always a fun place to play ball”

two decades, he decided it
was time to bring the field
back to the next generation
of ball players.
“I like to talk to the older
folks about their days on
that field. We talk about
the teams, the players, the
camaraderie in the teams,
it is a family there,” said
Gonzalez.
He wanted to pass
onto a new generation
of children the passion
that he and others had
for playing ball. So three
years ago it became his
passion to bring the former
Eagle’s Nest Field back as
a ball field and a place that
leagues could once again
hold their games.
“He had a lot of vision
where others didn’t have
vision to try to bring this
diamond back and get
leagues and tournaments
back down here. He was
persistent and tenacious
about his dream.
I
remember him playing
here and seeing him here
as a young man wanting to
play. This is where he got
his start and I think he feels
he wanted to help others
get their start here,” said
Art Ruiz.
Ruiz recalled his ball
playing days at the Eagle’s
Nest Field in the 70’s and
80’s.
“The decline of fast pitch
softball and the decline of
the area, what was going
on here, I don’t think they
(VFW Post 213) were very
active to keep the field up
the way they had in the
past,” he said.
Last
weekend,
a
rededication
ceremony
was held to announce the
opening of the Eagles’ Nest
Post and the Eagle’s Nest
ball field.
“It is a great improvement,
just the infield alone, you
can tell there was a lot of
money spent to make it
look fast. When we played
here before it was a lot of
sand, you would spin your
wheels when you came out
of the batter box, but now
it looks like a major league
infield,” said Ruiz.
When Chris Gonzalez
decided to renovate the
field, he was astounded
at the cost.
He held
fundraisers
but
wasn’t
raising enough money at
a very fast pace to set his
dream in motion. When
his brother Eric saw his
frustration, he stepped in to
see how he could help.
“He was very passionate
about opening the field
and had a vision of what
he wanted it to become.
He knew what he wanted
to do; he didn’t know
the right way to get the
funds for this expensive
project. His brother Eric
knew how to get the
funds and the two of them
worked together to find
the funding from grants,”
said Kerry Madrigal, Post
Commander.
Eric
Gonzalez
had
worked 11 years at
City Hall and it was his
connections there that he
began to ask questions of
the Unified Government
Parks
and
Recreation
department on who they
would recommend to help
them prepare the field.
He sought existing grants
through the Hollywood
Casino,
Schlitterbahn
Waterparks and others that
would give his brother the
funds to reach his goal.
They were able to raise
$40,000 through grants
but still need additional
funding to finish the field.
At the time of the dedication
of the renovated ball field,
Chris Gonzalez said he
had “$9 left in the account
from the $40,000 grant.”
The next project on his
list for the ball field is to
raise enough funds to put
bleachers in.
As Eric Gonzalez looked
over the field, he said, “This
field has been dormant for
decades. When you look at
the renovation, in the Latino
urban community, it is like
a new beginning all over
again. We have a bright
future for our kids who
will end up remembering
where they started playing
ball. I remember coming
to the field and watching
my older brother play,” he
said.

on the field in the 90s and

a fun place to play. I watched my dad and uncles play here. The field today looks a lot better than it used to.
Chris has been doing hard work on the field, getting it ready for all of us who have come back to play a game on
the new field today. I am anxious to step out on the field and play,” said Fernandez. It is Chris Gonzalez’ hope
that former players will return and either play ball again or come back and tell the stories of their time playing
fast pitch until dark.

Madrigal
recognized
the need to not only bring
back the ball field but also
bring back the VFW Post
213 in Argentine. The
post had been closed
for about 18 years but it
was her desire and many
others to get it reopened
for the veterans of war and
carry on their stories of
fighting for their country.
“Six years ago I never
thought this day would
come,” she said. Inside
the Eagle’s Nest, pictures
line the wall of war
veterans and the ball
teams that played on the
field. Madrigal’s husband
Louis played on the field
as a young boy and she
said, “It is cool to hear
the stories of when they
played the game.”
Although there is still
some work to do on the
field, the ball diamond is
ready for teams. Chris
Gonzalez has a schedule
for the field put together
and is booking leagues to
be on the ball diamond.
“It is like the Field of
Dreams, if you build it
they will come. Well they
built it and I think you will
start seeing teams come
down and participating
in tournaments here,” said
Ruiz.

Ruiz recordó sus días
de juego de pelota en el
campo de Eagle’s Nest en
los años 70 y 80.

un niño, dijo: “Es bueno

“We don’t see crime every minute”

trajectory since 2012,”
said Zeigler.
Statistics
show
that
Kansas City, Kansas had
22 homicides and 144
drive-by shootings in 2012.
Last year, homicides had
more than doubled rising
to 47. Drive-by shootings
were at 286, many of
which happened in a
historically
crime-ridden
area of the city.
Through the DDACTS
(Data Driven Approaches
to Crime and Traffic Safety)
research, he found that
the area between Seventh
Street and 18th Street and
from Grandview Boulevard
to North Pacific Avenue
would be the area the
department would focus
the initiative on.
“In this 1.2 square mile
area we experienced 80
out of the 286 drive by
shootings, 14 of the 47
homicides last year. This
area needs attention. We
are going to attack the
crime issues, homicides,
robberies, gang activities,
burglaries, dope houses,
street sales and blight
issues. With your help,
you will identify the areas
that we need to roll our
resources to in order to
address those issues,” he
stated.
The police department
took the data gathered
for the last five years and
looked at violent crime
and traffic data.
“Whichever parts of
our city have high levels
of violent crime and traffic
issues, that is considered
your DDACTS zones. That
is how we created our
zone, we took the data
over the last five years
and looked at where was
the highest crime, had the
highest traffic issues and
we pinpoint the area that
will be considered the
zone for the enforcement,”
said Public Information
Officer Cameron Morgan.
According to the data,
researchers have said
there is a correlation
between high traffic issues
and violent crime.
During Project Act,
a year long initiative,
neighbors will see police
officers in their area on a
regular basis. The police
department
surveyed
about 600 residents and
asked what was their
number one issue in the
community.
“The survey showed
that the number one
concern for the residents
were speeding and traffic
incidents. We are going
to do additional traffic
patrolling in that area.
Residents may see more
officers having lunch in
the area, more officers
interacting with the kids.
If anyone is there doing
bad things, they will see
officers there all the time,
officers running radar
on Central Avenue, they
will always be doing
something to steer them
away from the area,” said
Officer Morgan.
Edgar Galicia, Executive

Betterment
Association
(CABA), supports the new
Project Act initiative and
explained that “we want
the security, we want our
neighborhoods to be safe
and secure.”
“We
have
to
do
everything we can as
a community to better
the neighborhoods and
improve the quality of
life. Regarding the Act
program, we welcome any
initiative that comes to be
positive and constructive,
that is open and welcoming
and does not promote
segregation but inclusion
and helps everyone feel
more secure regardless
of their origins,” said
Galicia.
CABA is working closely
with the police department
to ensure that everyone is
taken into consideration
and will benefit from the
program.
“Being a heavily Latino
community in Wyandotte
County, our participation
in this program is very
important.
We believe
it will build, we just have
to work together in the
communication
part,
both ways, not just from
the
government
side,
not just from the police
side, but from all the
community groups, all the
neighborhood
groups,
all the residents, so they
all have a chance to
express their concerns,
their opinions and their
perspective on things,” he
said.
Galicia is happy that
the police department has
done an extensive study to
find the hotspots for crime.
He is sadden that crime is
rising in his area.
“We don’t see crime
every minute.
In fact,
through the last years,
Central
Avenue
has
changed quite a bit, it
feels much safer and
business
is
booming.
We have some of the
strongest
neighborhood
groups working here. As
Central Avenue Betterment
Association promotes our
mission … higher quality
of life for all, business
and residences, we are
happy to say we are not
the only ones doing it.
We are happy to back
initiatives that are positive
and inclusive for our
community,” said Galicia.
Besides Project Act,
Police
Chief
Zeigler
announced that they are
reinstating
the
police
chase policy if someone
flees from an police officer.
In 2014, Garciela Olivas
and Jasmine Rodriguez
were killed in two separate
crashes in a span of two
months due to police
chases of people who fled
from them during a traffic
stop.
Shortly
after
their
deaths, the Kansas City,
Kansas police department
announced in 2014 they
would not get involved in
police chases unless the
suspects had committed a
serious felony.
“The data we collected
shows that since we
stopped
pursuing--the
number of people fleeing
from us increased. When
we were pursuing not as
many people fled from us,
not as many people were
attempting to allude us.
The fact that violent crime
has increased and the
number of people fleeing
from us has increased,
KCK Police will be more visible on Central Avenue and drivers may see more cars
being pulled over due to a broken tail light or a driver that runs a stop sign.

understand that as long
as they are law-abiding
citizens they have nothing
to fear.

and working hard to make
a life here, we want them
to feel secure. We want
them to feel that we are
not going to criminalize
them just because they are
undocumented as long as
they don’t participate in
criminal activity,” he said.
The Police Chief is
working to help the Latino
community, documented
and
undocumented
immigrants understand that
the new crime initiative is
not an immigration issue.
“We understand that
people may be scared.
The Chief is trying to put
his message out there
and be clear that this is
not about immigration. It
is not why the zone was
picked. It has nothing to
do with that … it is about
the data. We don’t care
about your immigration
status; it is not a factor in
what we are doing. We
are releasing videos about
what this initiative is about
and we are releasing them
in Spanish as well. We
are trying to reduce violent
crime and the Chief has
said in multiple interviews
this project is not about
immigration,” he said.
The new crime initiative,
Project Act, will begin on
June 1.

No es por eso que la
zona
fue
escogida.
No tiene nada que ver
con eso, se trata de los
datos. No nos importa su
estado de inmigración;
no es un factor en lo
que estamos haciendo.
Publicamos videos sobre
lo que es esta iniciativa
y los estamos publicando
en español también.
Estamos tratando de
reducir el crimen violento
y el Jefe ha dicho en
múltiples entrevistas que
este proyecto no se trata
de inmigración”, dijo.

to the United States
Constitution, “Freedom
of Speech is the right
to express any opinion
without censorship or
restraint.” Freedom of
speech should be limited
because words can hurt.
In this paper I will talk
about different types of
Harassment.
Harassment
is
aggressive
pressure
or intimidation by one
person upon another.
When a person is
harassing
another
they might threaten
them. There can be
police
harassment.
Police harassment is
illegal but police are
still harassing other
people. In his article

hablaré sobre diferentes
tipos de acoso.
El acoso es presión
agresiva o intimidación
por
una
persona
sobre otra. Cuando
una
persona
está
acosando a otra, podría
amenazar. Puede haber
acoso policial. El acoso
policial es ilegal, pero la
policía sigue hostigando
a otras personas. En su
artículo “15 Ejemplos
más escandalosos de
mala conducta policial
en el Informe DoJ sobre
Ferguson”,
Taylor
Wofford afirma que “los

our president Donald
Trump was recorded
using it. According to
Lydia O’Connor in The
Huffington Post, when
the president went to a
casino, the black people
were asked to leave.
The author also claims
that Donald Trump said,
¨Gonzalo Curiel, the
federal judge presiding
over a class action
against the for-profit
Trump University, could
not fairly hear the case
because of his Mexican
heritage.” I believe
that
Donald
Trump
should not be racist
because in the United
States
everyone
is
equal. As I said before,
some people abuse
freedom of speech; as
a president, Donald
Trump should not be
abusing it.
Some people have
different opinions, and
some people might
believe that freedom
of speech should be
unlimited. One reason
why people don’t want to
limit freedom of speech
is because they want
to be able to exchange
ideas. Another reason
is that “free speech is
foundational to human
flourishing . . . it is
essential to democracy
and a bulwark against
tyranny,” says Steven
Pinker in “Why Free
Speech Is Fundamental.”
In
some
countries,
like
Libya,
Burma,
Equatorial Guinea and
many others, people do
not have any freedom
of speech and the
government
controls
everything they do and
say.
When we think of
different opinions about
the freedom of speech
we see that both sides
of
argument
have
good reasons. But if
the freedom of speech
is unlimited, lots of
people will get hurt. If
the freedom of speech
is limited, people will
not get hurt as much.
This is why I believe
that freedom of speech
should be limited.

FastTrac
NewVenture
class.
The event, which took
place May 11th at
The Exchange at Lead
Bank,
allowed
the
“empresarias” to share
with their friends and
family the history of
their businesses, and
how they plan to grow
and
continue
their
successes.
Keynote
speaker,
Elvira
Arizmendi of Elvira’s
Cakes, spoke to the
graduates’
children
about being patient
with
their
mothers
as they balance the
work of sustaining
their businesses, and
providing opportunities
for their kids.
“This
was
an
extremely
exciting
and emotional event”,
said HEDC’s Michael
Carmona,
FastTrac
instructor. “Knowing
that these women have
worked hard in their
businesses – balancing
their personal and
professional lives – we
wanted this to be a
celebration not only for
them, but also for their
children. As a kid, we
never understand all
the things our parents
do to make our lives
better. It was great to
see how excited and
attentive the kids were
tonight.”

7-step guide to turning
children into young adults
with healthy savings habits

A
s Jodi walked to class that
day the freshman noticed
a large circle of booths
spread out across the main
courtyard of campus.
Scattered among the booths was
one giving away free t-shirts with
the school’s mascot on it. All Jodi
had to do to get the free swag
was fill out a form. As a bonus she
would receive this little plastic card
that was practically free money.
Or so she thought. Four years
later she was stuck with a $5,000
t-shirt thanks to the debt she rang
up.
Children who learn the importance
of saving money at a young age are
much better prepared to manage
their money independently once they
are grown,” says Eric Hutchinson,
certified financial planner and
author of the book “The Financial
Briefing.”
Jodi’s parents never talked to her
about debt. Or how she could have
bought a similar t-shirt with cash,
stashed away a matching amount
in an emergency fund and been in
the clear financially by the time she
graduated. Instead she has joined
the average college graduate in
America who leaves school with
more than $5,600 in credit card
debt alone.
Hutchinson
recommends
that children begin to build an
emergency fund as soon as they
can so they can have some money
saved up and understand the
principals of savings and creating
an emergency account by the time
they become young adults.
Here are seven ways to help your
child develop a lifetime emergency
fund:
Encourage kids to save something.
Whether it be a 10-year-old stashing
away a dollar or teenagers opening
a savings or checking account, get
kids in the habit of saving no matter
how small the amount.
Help kids balance treats and
sacrifices. Help your kids by setting,
and meeting goals. Once those
goals are met allow them a little
withdrawal to buy something for
themselves.
Loose change goes to the
emergency fund. Loose change can
add up, so don’t let kids discard
those pennies or leave them lying in
the parking lot – no matter if they
are heads or tails up.
Set an example. Children don’t
miss much, and if they don’t see you
saving, they might wonder why they
need to save.
Keep kids away from credit as long
as possible. Credit card companies
have large marketing budgets and
much of those funds are spent on
marketing to older teenagers. Make
sure he or she understands what
credit pitfalls could lie ahead.
Schedule
money
meetings.
Meet with your child at regular
intervals so that you can discuss
their emergency account, answer
questions and discuss money issues
he or she might encounter.
Help kids set up a real budget.
The earlier kids learn to manage
a budget, the easier things will be
down the line. Younger kids can start
learning by jotting their plusses and
minuses down on a piece of paper,
while older kids can be introduced
to budgeting on software and apps.
“Circumstances
are
always
changing as people grow older,”
Hutchinson
says.
“I
would
recommend going over each year’s
changing needs with your kids. The
emergency fund has to adapt and be
ready for whatever circumstances
might pop up.”
