MEDIA KIT 7 billion Others Video exhibition by Yann Arthus-Bertrand A GoodPlanet Foundation project Exhibition at the Museum Of Photographic Arts (MOPA) in San Diego from February 21 to September 13, 2015 a project of the an exhibition produced by supported by 7 billion Others in San Diego > Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA), San Diego, Calif. from February 21 to September 13, 2015 This February, the 7 billion Others exhibit will be opening in the United States for the first time ever. The GoodPlanet Foundation is proud to present this project made possible thanks to BNP Paribas at San Diego’s Museum of Photographic Arts. In an extended run of 30 weeks, the portraits and stories of 7 billion Others will share space with the photographic artworks of the museum. As a prestigious cultural and artistic site, MOPA is the perfect setting to showcase this sensitive and humanistic video portrait of the world. Today, 7 billion Others invites audiences in the United States to share in a journey through the eyes and voices of thousands of humans. Visitors to the exhibit are indeed transported—around the world, to different cultures and within themselves—in search of that human spark that resides within us all. 7 billion Others, a video portrait of humanity today. 6,000 interviews 45 questions 84 countries more than 50 languages From a Brazilian fisherman to a Chinese shopkeeper, from a German performer to an Afghan farmer, all answered the same questions about their fears, dreams, ordeals, hopes: ” What have you learned from your parents? What do you want to pass on to your children? What was the most difficult event you ever faced in your life? What does love mean to you? ” Forty-five essential questions (see Appendix 2) that help us to find out what separates and what unites us. These portraits of humanity today are accessible on the website: > www.7billionothers.org Information on the San Diego exhibit is available on this page: www.7billionothers.org/sandiego I2 7 billion Others in San Diego 1 7 billion Others... ” Everything began with a helicopter breakdown in Mali. While I was waiting for the pilot, I spent a whole day talking with one of the villagers. He spoke to me about his daily life, his hopes and fears: his sole ambition was to feed his children. Interrupted from my work for a magazine, I suddenly found myself plunged into the most elemental of concerns. He looked me straight in the eyes, uncomplaining, asking for nothing, expressing no resentment or ill will. I’d come to shoot landscapes but was captivated by this man’s face and words. Later on, I was flying all over the planet for Earth From Above and HOME, and as I saw men and women below me, I dreamt of understanding their words, of feeling what linked us. Because, from up there, the Earth looks like an immense area to be shared. But as soon as I landed, problems emerged. I found myself confronted by inflexible bureaucracy and barriers laid down by men, symbols of the difficulty we have in living together. Living together... We live in amazing times. Everything moves at a crazy pace. When I think about how my parents lived, it seems scarcely believable. Today, we have at our disposal extraordinary tools for communication: we can see everything, know everything. The quantity of information in circulation has never been greater. All of that is very positive. The irony is that at the same time we still know very little about our neighbours. Now, however, the only possible response is to make a move toward the other person, to understand them. For in struggles to come, whether it is the struggle against poverty or climate change, we cannot act on our own. The times in which one could think only of oneself or of one’s own small community are over. From now on, we cannot ignore what it is that links us and the responsibilities that this implies. There are more than seven billion of us on Earth, and there will be no sustainable development if we cannot manage to live together. That is why 7 billion Others is so important to me. I believe in it because it concerns all of us and because it encourages us to take action. I hope that each one of us will want to reach out and make these encounters, to listen to other people and to contribute to the life of 7 billion Others by adding our own experiences. I’m really happy that this project is being presented at San Diego’s MOPA in California for its United States premiere. Visitors will be able to meet the people who inhabit our planet—those Others who are so far away, yet so close to us. ” Yann Arthus-Bertrand President of the GoodPlanet Foundation I3 7 billion Others in San Diego 2 The realization 7 billion Others was born of a simple desire to meet the Other. Learning to live side by side starts with the desire to know each Other; it starts with daring to take the first step, to question, to listen and to immerse oneself in an Other’s story. The thousands of stories filmed around the world and presented in 7 billion Others illustrate the diversity of cultures but also the universality of the human condition. The crew chose to adopt a common “language” to bind these portraits together, to put them in dialogue with one another and to highlight their diversity: • Variety in interviewees: We always sought to interview as wide a range of personalities as we could while still representing the entire population as accurately as possible. For every country in which the filming took place, the reporters interviewed young and old people, city dwellers and rural people, and individuals of all social backgrounds, genders, age groups, professions, religions and ethnicities. • The same questionnaire: More than 40 questions were asked about aspects that affect us all, such as family, love and happiness. The questions also touch on topics that set us apart like war, certain values and beliefs. • The same composition: Each face is shot the same way: close up and framed vertically. Interviewees speak directly to the viewer, just as we saw them. • The same approach: The filming equipment was chosen with intimacy in mind. A light camera on a tripod, two simple microphones—each reporter can control the audio and video of each interview without the need for extra help. They tried to capture the most unique and intimate portrait possible in every discussion. This involved giving generously of themselves in each interview; through this interaction, trust is built. Even though the interviewee is aware of the universal scope of the interview, they address the reporter spontaneously and honestly. • The same film format: The footage is always presented the same way. The screen is split vertically: the person tells their story in their native language on the left while subtitles are displayed on the right. The exhibit at MOPA is bilingual, and will include subtitles in English and Spanish. I4 7 billion Others in San Diego 3 A living project that’s been around the world and is still going strong... To date, the 7 billion Others teams have collected 6,000 interviews in 84 countries. The 7 billion Others project has traveled around the world for more than seven years and has interviewed many people throughout the United States and in California. 7 billion Others is still collecting new stories as more footage rolls in thanks to users uploading on the website. This additional filming can be done in places where the 7 billion Others team has never gone before or organized by theme. For example, in 2009, a new film called Climate Voices was completed. It was made with 600 additional interviews recorded in 17 countries. The film was screened at the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference in December 2009 and at all subsequent exhibits. In 2011, some films were produced, this time about the Millennium Development Goals, in collaboration with RFI (Radio France Internationale) and FRANCE 24. 7 billion Others interviewed more than 500 people in 16 countries as part of this project, titled Development Matters. 4 Californian voices emerging from the 7 billion Others project "I wanted to be superman when I was a little kid, I wanted to be a hero like everyone else but things never work out the way you want to." Rolando, lives in California, USA "Did you tell somebody you love them today? Did you tell somebody in your life you love them today? If you didn’t, please, tell him." Juliana, lives in California, USA "Life is not a problem to be solved. I think life is a mystery to explore. So I don’t know what the best moment of my life is yet. I’m absolutely certain that it is still to come. I’m still waiting. Martin, lives in California, USA "Happiness is in every moment potentially. It’s so close, so close to us all the time. We can get a child to laugh so easily and that is what happiness tumbles out of that. Happiness is everywhere. But it’s not a big loud thing, it’s not a big expensive thing. Happiness is a little quiet human connection." Sharon, lives in California, USA "My challenges to the world is become aware of this incredible gift of life that we have, and protect it.We only have it for a very short time. And for those that come after us, be caretakers of this gift of life that we have, every moment, every day, take a little time to appreciate this blessing of life that we have around us. Take a moment and say thank you. Just breathe and say thank you." Richard, lives in California, USA "My dad says: ‘Anyway when you find the meaning of life, you die. It’s like the minute I’ll figure all out, within 2 hours, I’ll be dead.’ So maybe we shouldn’t try to figure it out." The exhibition opens with a spectacular video art display: Mosaic. Symbol of this bold project, the film Mosaic is projected on a wall 42 feet in length. A multitude of faces, eyes, expressions and smiles share their view of the world and life. The exhibition continues with an exploration of the thematic films making up the project. Visitors make their way through small, intimate screening spaces at their own pace. The programming will change to show a total of 22 thematic films, more than 12 hours of video. Virtually, the whole collection of 7 billion Others films will be presented in this way to the Californian public from February to September 2015. Visitors can then discover Making-Of. A key element of the exhibition, the film looks at what went on behind the scenes. Seven years of filming from the other side of the camera are thus revealed: How did the reporters meet the people interviewed? How did a 7 billion Others interview unfold? What was the interpreter’s role? What did the reporters feel after thousands of hours spent listening to the experiences and stories of these men and women from around the world? This 49-minute film explores the project from a different perspective on the other side of the lens. The exhibition ends with a second art installation, Messages, which illustrates the final question posed by reporters in the interviews: “We are 7 billion human beings on Earth; what message would you like to address to the inhabitants of the planet?” The replies take the form of many cries from the heart, of hope, of warning or of awareness-raising as to the problems which affect us all. Messages of love, of rebellion or confidences murmured in the ear; some sing, laugh or let silence settle, as sometimes a message does not need words. See appendix 3 for details of the screening schedule. 6.3 INTERACTIVE SPACE – HOW TO TAKE PART IN THE PROJECT Free Internet access points at the heart of the exhibition allow visitors to post their testimonies on the project’s interactive website: www.7billionothers.org/your-testimonies These testimonies, which can be shared via email and social networks, are an integral part of the project and extend the community of 7 billion Others across the Web and beyond borders. I8 7 billion Others in San Diego 6.4 MORE THAN AN EXHIBITION – SOCIAL, INFORMATIVE ACTION AND A GESTURE OF SOLIDARITY MOPA and the GoodPlanet Foundation have come together around a common initiative: to raise awareness of the richness of life and the need of living together sustainably. The enthusiasm and professionalism of the museum teams is allied to an unwavering desire to be part of their environment, to involve surrounding communities and to help the least advantaged. Interactive and educational activities resulting from in-depth consideration and a humanist vision of the world further enrich the exhibition experience. It is crucial for the 7 billion Others project that each exhibition is accompanied by a fringe program of specific events, identified in partnership with the exhibition venue and local organizations. A broad range of activities is offered and is addressed at everyone, adults and children alike. These activities provide an opportunity to develop the discussions prompted by the videos, particularly during debates and conferences on selected topics. The discussions are enhanced by face-to-face sessions with different contributors, local organizations and NGOs, who come along to present their experiences and to exchange views and ideas with visitors. This two-way aspect is a cornerstone of an open dialogue between the various interlocutors and the visitors, and between the visitors themselves. In addition, designated spaces are set aside for this purpose inside the exhibition itself. A special place is also given to students, communities, young people and seniors to develop the pedagogical and interactive value of the project. Educational resources designed specifically for the exhibition will be distributed to different classes in San Diego and its surrounding region. The project will also be displayed through various activities located in MOPA’s new 1,200 square-foot gallery with interactive technology. Screenings and activities will be organized within and outside the museum for disabled, remote and disadvantaged public to raise awareness among a diversified audience. I 10 7 billion Others in San Diego Appendix 1: About the GoodPlanet Foundation LIVING TOGETHER IN A SUSTAINABLE MANNER I have been contemplating the wealth and beauty of the Planet for more than forty years. I’ve been seeing it change and I’ve been feeling its fragility grow. In the year 2000, I wanted to establish a wide range inventory through my project «Earth from above». But the imbalances are getting larger and I understood that I need to go further in my commitment. I thus created the GoodPlanet Foundation in 2005 to raise awareness and to inform and educate audiences of all ages and backgrounds. But also to take action and to make each and everyone eager to get involved in projects that contribute to greater respect for the Planet and for Mankind. I really believe that with GoodPlanet, we invented a new manner to speak to men and women about the great challenges of our era. A more humane and generous manner. More engaging as well, because whoever you are and wherever you come from, taking action builds happiness.
