We got this idea with the help of our teacher, Mr.Tynan and we have decided to do this project because we thought it would be interesting and fun to do. To investigate this, we will use a variety of materials such as cotton and denim. We are also going to use a microphone (to gather the sound), a Lab Quest (to measure the sound differences on graphs) and also a 2 litre bottle to block the sound occurring throughout the room. We are hoping to find the best insulator, which we are expecting to be egg carton, and good graphs to show the results clearly. Summary/Abstract The name of our project is ‘What materials block sound effectively.’ We were trying to investigate which material is the best sound insulator. The materials we decided to use were cotton, polycotton, egg carton, denim and paper. To investigate this we decided to connect a microphone to a Lab Quest and place the microphone in the mouth of the bottle. We then placed each material, one at a time, into the bottle. Finally, we repeated the same phone alarm for each material and recorded each sound difference on a graph. After carrying out this experiment, we have learned that denim is the best sound insulator out of the five materials we investigated on. Experimental Procedure We connected a microphone to a Lab Quest. Then we placed each material (one at a time) in the bottle and placed the microphone in the mouth of the bottle. We used a phone to repeat the same sound through each material as the Lab Quest was recording the sound difference on a graph. Results No Insulator CONTROL = 3.060 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Denim= 2.709 Paper= 2.821 Polycotton= 2.834 Cotton= 2.872 Egg Carton= 2.971 Are investigation showed that out of the five materials we have tested. Denim is the Best sound insulator. Conclusion After carrying out this project, we have discovered that Denim is the best sound insulator and the egg carton was the worst. Acknowledgements We would like to thank our teacher, Mr.Tynan, for helping us with this project and entering us into this competition.
