Doubles Plus One Activities
The activities below require the use of small items, coins, a 10-sided die,
deck of cards, or Uno cards. A number line or ten frame mat can also be
used for extra support.

Count and add
Set out a number of items for your child to count. Then, add a
second group of the same number of items as they first group. Last,
add one more. Have your child count how many items there are in
all. Encourage your child to count on from where he/she left off,
but if necessary, he/she may count all items again. Then, ask your
child to say or write the math fact. Example: 5+6=11.

Roll and add a double
Roll a ten sided dice. Add the number to itself. Then, add one
more. Say the fact aloud or write it down.. Example: 9 + 10 = 19.

Flip and add one more
Shuffle the number cards from a standard deck of cards or Uno
deck. Place the cards face down in a pile. Flip a card over. Add
the number to itself. Then, add one more. Say the fact aloud or
write it down. Example: 3+4 =7.

Coin Counting
Set out a number of pennies for your child to count. Add a second
group of pennies that has the same amount as the first group. Then
add one more and ask your child to count how many there are in
all. If your child can easily identify nickels and dimes, try replacing 5
pennies with a nickel and 10 pennies with a dime to make the
activity more challenging.
