Seville is the capital of the region of
Andalucia and southern Spain’s cultural
and financial center. Its cathedral is
among the largest and most beautiful
in the world. Christopher Columbus is
buried here. You can explore examples
of impressive Moorish architecture,
as well as experience flamenco and
bullfighting firsthand in this historic city.
(Accommodations, Seville)
Day 2 ~ Seville: After breakfast,
you’ll depart with your guide for a
three-hour walking tour of the city,
including admission to the cathedral’s
magnificent bell tower, La Giralda,
which was actually built as a minaret
tower for the mosque that once stood on
the site, during the time that the Moors
ruled southern Spain for 800 years.
(Breakfast, Seville; accommodations, Arcos de la

Day 4 ˜ Arcos to Ronda: After breakfast in
your hotel, you’ll drive to Ronda, one of the most
beautiful of the “white villages.” Founded by the
Romans, the town is set around a deep gorge and
is approached by crossing a massive bridge. Here
you’ll have a two-hour city tour led by a local
guide to see Ronda’s highlights, including Spain’s
oldest bullring with time to stroll and shop along
Calle Espinel as well as visit a former Moorish palace. (Breakfast, Arcos; accommodations, Ronda)
Day 5 ˜ Ronda to Granada: After breakfast at
your hotel, you’ll drive east to Granada, a strikingly beautiful city set at the foot of the Sierra Nevada
mountains and at the confluence of four rivers.
Granada is most famous as the location of the
Alhambra, a 1000-year-old Moorish palace of stunning architecture and art—one of the world’s great
buildings and a UNESCO heritage site. Granada’s
cathedral is a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and
Baroque elements. The adjoining Royal Chapel is
the resting place of King Ferdinand and Queen
Isabella. (Breakfast, Ronda; accommodations, Granada)
Day 6 ˜ Granada: After breakfast you’ll have a
Day 7 ˜ Granada to Córdoba: After breakfast
at your hotel, drive northwest to the city of Córdoba, an important city in Roman times and later the
capital of the Arabic Caliphate which comprised
almost all of the Iberian Peninsula. In the tenth
century Córdoba was the largest city in Europe.
Rich in architecture, this city should be explored,
as you will do on a two-hour walking tour with a
local guide in the afternoon. The building known
as the “Mezquita” was built as a mosque by the
Moorish conquerors, starting in the ninth century.
After Fernando III captured the city in 1236 it was
converted to a cathedral. In the building you’ll find
Roman columns, Byzantine mosaics and Moorish
arches, as well as Gothic elements. Other sites to
explore include the Roman bridge across the river,
and the Museum of Andalusian Life nearby. (Breakfast, Granada; accommodations, Córdoba)
Day 8 ˜ Depart Córdoba: After breakfast at
your hotel, drive back to Seville to return your
rental car, or drop it at another city if you’re continuing with another Avanti adventure. (Breakfast,
Córdoba)
2 ½ hour private tour of the Alhambra complex of
buildings, including the central Palacios Nazaries,
perhaps the finest Islamic structure in Europe
with its impressive use of light, water, shade and
plants to make a harmonious whole. Don’t miss
the Courtyard of the Lions, with a fountain that
channels water through the mouths of twelve stone
lions. In the late afternoon, if time permits, climb
the hill behind the town at sunset for a spectacular
view over the town and the Alhambra. (Breakfast and
accommodations, Seville)
