Singalong There is an invitation to anyone who would like to join with us this Saturday March 18th at 2pm, for an “Informal Singalong” with the Hyden Choir, singing some old gospel favourites and learning some new ones. This will be followed by afternoon tea in the hall. Everyone welcome to come and join in if you enjoy a good old fashion sing along. Baptism It was a great day last Saturday March 11, to see Jake Ashmore give his heart to the Lord in Baptism. The church was filled with family and friends as they came to witness this great occasion. Jake likes the colour Yellow and the church was decorated in yellow sunflowers and Jake and Tahlia brought along their yellow Weiro’s who gave us much pleasure as they sang throughout the service. We wish Jake God’s Blessing as he lives his life for Him each day. Choir Last Friday members of Hyden, Quairading and Narembeen choirs gathered together at the Narembeen Church Hall for a day of singing and fellowship. This event has taken place for many years and has been enjoyed by all. The singing has been lifted to a high standard due to the efforts of the conductor Vivienne Marshall from Hyden and pianist Dianne Major, Mt Walker. As the Marshall farm has been sold, Vivienne and her husband will be moving to Australind. Best wishes with your move to the coast. Cheerio Cheerio to Maisie Cusack, presently a patient in the Mount Hospital. Also best wishes to Yvonne Treloar for a speedy recovery. Welcome A warm Narembeen welcome to Joanne May who is shifting into the Gum Tree Units. Joanne has been living in Northcliffe for the past few years and has moved to be close to her sisters Colleen Crowd & Dianne Pember. News from America Megan McKay, granddaughter of Hendy and Anita Cowan, playing college basketball on a scholarship at St Mary’s College in Moraga, California is pictured in the Grand Final of the West Coast Championships for the 2016 - 2017 season just played in Las Vegas last week. St Mary’s men’s and women’s teams both finished the season well, being second and third in the Conference respectively. They both played Gonzaga; which finished on top in both competitions. St Mary’s were Runner’s Up in both Final games. Megan played a strong physical game and is pictured here against three opponents. Between the two teams there are 10 Australians on scholarships at the College. 3 The Fence Post 15th March 2017 4 The Fence Post 15th March 2017 5 The Fence Post 15th March 2017 6 The Fence Post 15th March 2017 7 The Fence Post 15th March 2017 8 The Fence Post 15th March 2017 Narembeen Garden Club I have been getting a lot of nice comments about my front garden and consequently given out quite a few cuttings. Then last week I went to visit someone in Ada Street and as it was a nice night decided to walk. I only had to pass a few homes to reach my destination but I got to look at each garden as I went and there were plants in each garden from which I would have loved to knock on the owner’s door and ask for a cutting. Initial discussions amongst other keen gardeners agreed that a Garden Club would be a great idea to get together to sell or swap plants, share tips and tricks, even fundraise. Interested, either to participate or just to donate cuttings from your own garden please let me know. Rosalie Post Office Licensee PS. I was truly surprised, delighted and inspired with the gardens at the Narembeen School. Congratulations Maria Hall, you have done a wonderful job. 9 The Fence Post 15th March 2017 10 The Fence Post 15th March 2017 11 The Fence Post 15th March 2017 12 The Fence Post 15th March 2017 13 The Fence Post 15th March 2017 14 The Fence Post 15th March 2017 15 The Fence Post 15th March 2017 16 The Fence Post 15th March 2017 ‘MASTER AND THE APPRENTICE’ Proudly sponsored by: Narembeen Roadhouse, Elders Narembeen, Landmark Narembeen, CSBP There has been many a story and the odd Hollywood movie that has been based around a master and an apprentice, think Star Wars or maybe the Karate Kid where an experienced campaigner teaches a young upstart new tricks. As the Hawks made their way into an unprecedented sixth consecutive Grand Final those present saw the rise of two apprentices and the class of some masters. Bowling first on a wicket that had a nice covering of grass new ball pairing Damon Hayter and Mitch Miolini started well, really well. Hayter continued his recent form as he charged down wind and challenged the Nungarin top order. Showing the benefit of years of experience Hayter made the most of the wicket by bowling straight and bowling fast, he made the batsmen play and held a length that made any front foot force a risk. Miolini, still only 23, has been bowling with the new ball for six years and on Saturday he came of age. The apprentice followed the lead of the master and he too held his length. He challenged the batsmen to drive on the up which was difficult to do on a wicket which was offering assistance and showing some inconsistencies even early on. Both openers took early wickets and quickly had the Panthers on the back foot. When it seams it spins and when you spin it like Glen Sands, if it seams it spins big! Sands bowling was the perfect follow up to the openers and his return of 4/27 ripped the heart out of any Nungarin resurgence that may have threatened. The Hawks backed him up well in the field, an effort highlighted by that catch. However I’ll let one A. Miolini tell you about that. Although a target of 87 seemed attainable Nungarin quickly showed why they had finished a clear second on the ladder as the Hawks slumped to 3/10. Here however came the second showing of the master and the apprentice. Chris Fields has been at the Hawks for some time and is somewhat of a unsung member of an at times brutal top order. Coming at 3/10 he showed his class and understanding of the situation by letting a lot of balls go, biding his time and striking when he could. Danny Gray has always been a cricketer of wonderful potential; a crushing ball striker he has played some fast and furious innings for the Hawks. On Saturday he only made 10 but it could well be his best innings for the club. Taking the lead of the master, the apprentice let the ball go, he understood the bowlers were on top and his club needed him to bat time. Gray and Fields took the wind out of the sails of the Panthers, protected the lower order for long enough to get the Hawks back in it. I’ve always been curious why followers of any sport discuss the size, or lack thereof, of finals results; 6/88 may sound like an unconvincing total to win a final by but it doesn’t matter. The Hawks have got their way there, two masters have shown the way for some apprentices to grow and the whole club continues to be a power. Nungarin 87 (Sands 4/27, Hayter 2/14) lost to Cricketing Hawks 6/88 Fields 39no, Butler 15no 17 The Fence Post 15th March 2017 DO YOU WANT THE FENCEPOST TO CONTINUE? The Ralph Thomas Shield, played as a pairs event, fielded 14 pairs in a round robin tournament of 3 games of 10 ends. The winners at the conclusion were Frank Copeman and Halley Cowan with Michael Hall and Peter Suckling the runners up. On Saturday Narembeen hosted the Ladies C of C Singles. Cheryl Auld (Yigarn) eventually won a very close final game against Helen Copeman. Cheryl reported that it was the first time anyone from Yilgarn had won the Champion of Champions. Well done Cheryl! On Sunday eight ladies played a social game of 3 bowl pairs with the pairing of Julie Hayter and Gwenda Pollard taking the prize. Social bowls will continue until the weather determines the viability of playing. Thursday scroungers will continue for a few more weeks.
