Class Handbook

Syllabus
Dear Parents,
I would like to take a minute to tell you how excited I am about this school year. I feel
honored to be able to review what your child already knows as well as present them with a new
curriculum that we will use daily. It will be a great school year! I am committed to the
importance of parent involvement in your child’s education. I firmly believe that your child
receives the best education possible when you and I work as a team. Enclosed in this syllabus
are copies of my rewards system and my homework policy. Please read all of these carefully.
They explain many of my expectations for your child in this class.
Please sign and return the back page of this syllabus.
Daily Work
Please see that the homework folder is sent back daily. It will have papers in it every
day. That does not mean that there will be homework every day. Most of the papers will be
notes from the school and papers that are already graded. Encourage your child to take good
care of his/her folder. These have to last all year long. Your child will have seatwork daily which
they should have enough time during the day to complete. If they do not, then they will bring it
home for homework.
If your student does not finish seatwork at school, they will be required to finish it at home. If
this happens on a Wednesday, they have the option of finishing it at home, or they may stay in
at recess on Wednesday to finish.
Homework
Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday each student will have a required reading assignment
from their group reader. The student is to read the selected pages to his/her self and then to a
parent or adult. I will send home a paper for you to sign or initial confirming your child has read
the passage so they receive credit for their reading. If the paper is returned unsigned, I will
assume that this student did not complete their homework. There will be NO reading
homework on Wednesday or Friday nights.
Spelling Lists will come home on Thursdays. Your student is expected to write their
words two times and turn them in the day before the spelling test to receive credit. The spelling
lists are to stay at home to be studied each night. Our spelling tests will be on Wednesdays.
Parent’s Homework Responsibilities
Try to supervise your child while they are completing their homework. Your child is to
use a #2 pencil to do their homework. Please encourage neat work on all homework papers.
Re-do Policy
If a student makes a 75 or below, then I will write re-do on the paper and send it home for
them to re-do. They can’t get full credit, but they will get half credit. If they do not bring back
the paper the next day corrected, then I will keep the first grade they received. I will not let
them do re-do’s for any grade above 75. They also need to learn to listen and read directions
carefully.
Tests
As the year gets under way, we will have a Spelling, Phonics, Math, Bible verse test and
Handwriting tests. Phonics test will be on Tuesdays, Spelling tests will be on Wednesdays, and
Bible verse tests and Math test will be on Fridays. That way the students’ tests are spread out
over the course of the week. I will hand out the Spelling list for the next week on Thursdays, the
day after the test. The other subjects will be announced in the weekly note.
Rewards and Discipline System
Each student has their own gumball machine with 5 gumballs. If the students are being
disruptive to the class, not following our class rules, harming themselves and or another
student they will be asked to pull a gumball. If a student that pulled a gumball during the day
changes their attitude and behavior, then they can earn their gumballs back. This
reward/discipline system is completely up to the student and their behavior.
1 gumball= 5 minutes of recess and end with prayer
2 gumballs= 10 minutes of recess and end with prayer
3 gumballs= teacher’s choice and end with prayer
4 gumballs= writing an apology letter to their parents
5 gumballs= a visit with Mrs. Miller
As a class we have two jars one that has colorful pom-poms and an empty jar. Each day the
entire class can earn 1-? Pom-poms. Once the class gets all of the pom-poms out of the first jar
and into the second jar we will have a class party. If the entire class or the majority of the
students are not behaving correctly, then pom-poms can come out of the second jar. We talk
daily about good and bad choices in the classroom and outside of the classroom. This is a whole
group behavioral system.

Nursing Home Project
One day every other month the first and second grade we will go to Grace Living Center.
The students will sing songs and greet the residents. Around the holidays the students will
make projects at school to give to the residents.
Bible- Our new bible curriculum is amazing. Each week your child will have a new memory verse
to memorize for our oral test on Friday. Please go over this with your child nightly. In January
we will go from an oral test to a written test with a word bank. We review it the memory verse
daily in class. For bonus points your student may write their memory verse twice, a parental
signature, and then turn it in before our quiz.
Book-It Goals
Please listen and read with your child. Reading with your child is very important. Each
child will need to read 20 books per month. A sheet of paper with 5 book slips on it goes in the
Tuesday folder each week. If your child needs more slips they can get a new sheet from our
classroom. At the end of our school year we will have a big party celebrating our success in
reading. If your child has read 20 books each month then they will be able to participate in our
celebration. The Book-It pizza program will start the first of October. Each child will receive a
pizza certificate for achieving the goal. Each child should return all slips by the first Wednesday
after the last day of the month. You may return it earlier, if it is finished. As a class we will
participate in the Thunder Reading challenge. As your child is reading please time their reading
and then record it on the calendar that will be in their homework folder daily. I will ask for their
calendars daily to initial. Please make sure you write down the time and initial. The reading
homework assignment does not count for Book-It slips. But can be counted towards their
Thunder reading challenge time.
Field Trips
We will go on one field trip every nine weeks for a total of four field trips. A note will go
home prior to the field trip outlining where we are going, what we will be doing, the cost of the
trip, and how many drivers we will need.
Birthday Parties
Birthday parties are allowed in the classroom. If you wish to have a party for your child,
please contact me to set up the date. The time for the parties will be around 2:40. That gives
20-25 minutes for the party. Cake, cookies, or cupcakes and drinks are great for the party.
Please do not send anything that may contain any form of nuts or peanut butter.
Holiday Parties
We will have three holiday parties during the school year. If you could sign-up to help
with at least one party that would be awesome. I will send home a sign-up sheet. Goody bags
are allowed at holiday parties, but not required. Again, please do not send anything that may
contain any form of nuts or peanut butter.
Other Activities
Second graders will participate in the yearly Spelling Bee and Speech Meets.
I will keep you informed if any changes are made to the information contained in this
syllabus. Thank you so much for your support. It is going to be a great year ☺! I believe in each
and every one of my students/children. This year we will cover several curriculums while
learning in a fun and creative ways!

I have read over the 2nd grade syllabus with my child. We understand the
requirements for a successful 2nd grade year. I understand that we, as the parents
and teacher are a team, and together we can help my child learn to the best of
their ability!
