Program Requirements - Students are advised to review the Academic Calendar carefully to ensure compliance with degree program requirements and program regulations. Students must ensure the correct courses are selected to satisfy all degree requirements. Final completion of degree requirements is the student’s responsibility. 5. FACULTY OF NURSING POLICIES & PROCEDURES Students are responsible for adhering to the Policies in the Calendar. Faculty-specific information is provided in the Faculty of Nursing section of the University of Manitoba Academic Calendar . 6. FACULTY OF NURSING PROGRAM INFORMATION Students admitted to the program must complete a minimum of three (3) credit hours of course work in the Faculty of Nursing in the Fall Term or Winter Term of their admission year. Students are expected to maintain contact with the program by registering in at least one Nursing course during each consecutive Fall Term and Winter Term while they are registered in the program. General Curriculum Information – Refer to the program outline in the Academic Calendar for the list of required courses: http://crscalprod1.cc.umanitoba.ca/Catalog/ViewCatalog.aspx and refer to the Program Planning Form at: http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/nursing/current/undergrad/media/program_planning_form.pdf Advance Standing – Nursing Student Advisors will send you an Academic Summary sheet, indicating the courses that will be transferred into the Faculty of Nursing for credit. If an Academic Summary sheet is not included with this package, it will be emailed to you under separate cover. If you have any questions, contact a Nursing Student Advisor or obtain a blank form at: http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/nursing/curr_undergrad.html 6 Information for LPNs – If you graduated from the Practical Nursing Program at Assiniboine Community College or the Diploma in Practical Nursing Program at the University College of the North, you should make an appointment to meet with a Nursing Student Advisor no later than July 15, 2014 to: • discuss advance standing • arrange challenge for credit for NURS 2120 Nursing Health Assessment (4) and NURS 2220 Pharmacology in Nursing Practice (3) LPNs may be required to demonstrate their skills and will be required to successfully complete the calculation test with other NURS 2130 students at the beginning of the term before receiving advance standing in NURS 2130 Nursing Skills Lab (2). It is important that LPNs arrange challenge for credit in July and meet the requirements prior to the Registration Revision period in Fall Term (see the Academic Schedule in the 2014-15 University of Manitoba Academic Calendar for deadline dates). Prerequisites – All courses from one year are prerequisite to courses in a subsequent year. Students who have not completed all courses from a previous year may be permitted to work ahead on select courses with special permission. Students should make an appointment to see a Faculty of Nursing Student Advisor or the Nursing Registrar in order to request special permission. Voluntary Withdrawal – Students are allowed only one voluntary withdrawal per nursing course in the Faculty of Nursing. If you have previously withdrawn from a Nursing course, Aurora Student will not prevent you from withdrawing from the same course a subsequent time; however, all withdrawals from nursing courses will be checked by Nursing Student Advisors. Students who withdraw from the same course will be re-registered in the same section of that course. In other words, you may not withdraw. Such students will be responsible for the content of any missed classes and for completing all assignments in the course. Withdrawals from a course during the Registration Revision period are not counted as voluntary withdrawals. It is only those courses for which a ‘VW’ code appears on the Student History that are considered voluntary withdrawals. Some courses are pre-requisite or co-requisite to other courses. When students withdraw from the pre/corequisite course, it is their responsibility to withdraw from the course for which they no longer meet the prerequisite. Failure to do so will result in their removal when it is discovered. If you are considering withdrawing from a course, please discuss this with a Nursing Student Advisor or the Nursing Registrar as this might significantly impact your program. Immediately inform the Nursing Course Leader, the CEF and/or the Site Program Leader (if it is a clinical course) when you withdraw. It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw from any course(s) for which they have received a failure in the prerequisite course(s) in a preceding term. Grades – You must obtain a minimum grade of “C” in each course in the program. In the Faculty of Nursing, a final grade of D in any course taken to complete the degree requirement is considered a failure and is not accepted by the Faculty. NOTE: Effective Fall Term 2013, all Clinical Courses are evaluated as a Pass/Fail grade. Failed Courses – Although Aurora Student may indicate “minimum met” for a grade of “D”, it is a failure in the Faculty of Nursing and must be repeated or replaced. If you fail a required course (receive less than a grade of 7 “C”), you must repeat it. Upon successful completion of the subsequent course, the most recent of the two grades will count in your GPA. Withdrawal from the program will be required following a second failure in the same nursing (NURS XXX0) course or a grade of Fail in any two nursing clinical courses. Students who are required to withdraw are ineligible for re-admission to the Faculty of Nursing. If you fail an elective course, you may repeat or replace the course. Inter-Faculty Option in Aging - Choosing the Option in Aging gives you the opportunity to expand your area of study into six faculties and gain special expertise in age-related fields. See Nursing Sections of the Academic Calendar & Catalog for more details and the website at: http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/nursing/current/undergrad/all/option_aging.html Consult a Nursing Student Advisor as you complete each Option in Aging course to ensure you meet the requirements of the option. YEAR ONE - Students admitted under Option 2 are advised to meet with a Nursing Student Advisor for program planning and must attend the Mandatory New Student Orientation. Check the website before attending to ensure that you are apprised of revisions to the time and location of the sessions. http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/nursing/prospective/new_admits.html. YEAR TWO - Students admitted to Year Two must attend the Mandatory New Student Orientation. Check the website before attending to ensure that you are apprised of revisions to the time and location of the sessions. http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/nursing/prospective/new_admits.html. YEARS THREE & FOUR - Electives – Students are required to complete a total of 12 credit hours of electives (including the three credit hours of Humanities in Year 1 and the Native Studies course in year 3). Of the total 12 credit hours of electives, 6 must be completed at or above the 2000 level. The Faculty of Nursing has ultimate discretion in determining the appropriateness of an elective to the Nursing program. Students may complete the electives by: • choosing any subject area except Pass/Fail courses, graduate level courses, or courses with credit hour designations other than 3 or 6 credit hours. • choosing courses from other faculties. You must meet the prerequisite requirements for courses in any faculty. Some faculties place restrictions on the number of credit hours for which you may register, or restrictions on the date on which you may register. Nursing electives are courses offered by the Faculty of Nursing. These courses are open to nursing and nonnursing students. Nursing electives may not be offered each term. For more information, see the Nursing section of the Academic Calendar and refer to Aurora Student, Class Schedule for updated information on course offerings each term. Bison Athletes: If you are a Bison athlete, it is your responsibility to please contact the course leader (Theory, Clinical and Skills Lab courses) to inform them of your schedule so reasonable accommodations can be made. 7. We have compiled a number of tips and suggestions for New/2nd year students to assist you as you transition into the Faculty of Nursing. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7 Ensure that you understand what the Course Leader/Professor requires for course assignments. The syllabus is considered a “contract” and it is important for you to review all of the information in each course syllabus. Your Course Leader will provide their contact information. Cosette Taylor, Coordinator, Innovation and Learning, has developed an exceptional website of resources for students with writing and communication challenges in academic course, Please visit Cosette’s link: http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/nursing/current/communications.html . If you are experiencing difficulty with communication in the clinical practice courses, please make an appointment to meet with Cosette ([email protected]). Your Course Leaders/Professors care about your progress. If you are going through a difficult time in your life (e.g. depression, anxiety, family member dying, sick children, divorce) please talk to your Course Leaders and/or a Nursing Student Advisor about the concerns you have. They will also direct you to supports that are available in the Faculty as well as within the University of Manitoba. Practice basic math skills, without using a calculator, especially with decimal points and fractions. Remember that for each hour of class time, you are required to study at least 2 hours. Study with a “buddy” or create small study groups. This will not only help you get through all the material, but will bring you closer to your fellow students. Clinical practice (e.g., hospitals, agencies, nursing homes) requires students to be knowledgeable about their patients and AWAKE while providing patient care. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep and have breakfast before nursing practice. Students must develop and demonstrate an understanding of the significance of the concept of “fitness to practice” in the context of self-regulation and public protection. Fitness to Practice is defined by the College of Registered Nurses, as: All the qualities and capabilities of an individual relevant to his or her capacity to practice as a registered nurse, including, but not limited to, freedom from any cognitive, physical, psychological or emotional condition, or a dependence on alcohol or drugs, that impairs his or her ability to practice nursing (CRNBC, 2006). 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. Everyone coming to the Faculty of Nursing is an adult. We will not be able to discuss your program with your parents or family. Please come dressed appropriately to class. Plan your “schedule” appropriately so you are in class when it begins. It is disruptive to everyone in the class when students walk in late or leave early. Contact your Course Leaders and let them know if you will be arriving late or missing class. Leaving the classroom early or arriving late lessens the learning experience for everyone. Remember, attendance in class, skills labs and clinical practice is MANDATORY. Please turn off your cell phones during class and clinical practice. You can check your messages during your break or lunch time. Your textbooks are valuable learning tools. However, you will also learn a lot during class. The interaction and discussion in class is important to your learning; therefore, it is imperative that you come to class prepared and ready to participate and be engaged. Please remember that your nursing courses build on previous learning. The knowledge you have acquired from courses you completed in University I (e.g., Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Growth and Development, Introduction to Nursing, electives) are important building blocks to the information in second, third and fourth year nursing courses. Make prompter cards for Health Assessment Lab (NURS 2120) that are based on a checklist, with added ‘prompters’ to assist you through the skill set. You can also make prompter cards for skills lab - i.e., when 21 14. 15. you may have forgotten all the steps for administration of oxygen or for medications, medical disorders. Ensure that you watch the Skills Videos. The Faculty of Nursing’s virtual “Student Suggestion Box” welcomes our students' constructive suggestions and ideas for improvement. If you wish to send your suggestions and ideas, please visit: http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/nursing/current/suggestion_box.html The Faculty of Nursing has a Facebook page with information, updates and upcoming events that you can find at the following link: https://www.facebook.com/NursingatUofM 22 APPENDIX F Tips for Students: From Fellow Students 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. You will need to purchase comfortable and workable white scrubs for all your clinical experiences. There are a number of places that sell scrubs in Winnipeg – though you can find white scrubs at big box stores. If you need specific sizes, lengths or simply need different sizes for your top and bottom you’ll have better luck at a local shop. Ask any nursing students you know where they found theirs or Google search for local shops if you can’t find out about any. Most places provide a student discount if you ask. Moreover, invest in a good pair of white runners. Most CEFs (clinical education facilitators) are okay with minimal logos but the bottoms of your shoes should be a light color and non-marking. Check your email every day. Your Instructors, Profs, Registrar, CEF, and NSA class rep will send you many important emails. These emails are almost always time sensitive. On the same note, stay up to date with your D2L accounts as some professors will use these programs to communicate information regarding class, assignments and exams with you. Additionally, you will usually be able to find your syllabus and class notes using one of these programs before your first class. “Care plans” is a term that you will hear over and over again throughout your nursing career. You will soon start to speak the language of nursing diagnosis, so don’t fret when you first hear this term. You will go over how to create a care plan during your first clinical rotation. Care plans take time, especially in the beginning, so start early and invest in a good care planning textbook that has rationales. At least one of your courses will list one as a required reading – it’s worth the money and will help you preserve your sanity. It is tempting to sell your textbooks ASAP, but you will find yourself referring back to your older textbooks throughout your nursing education. Your health assessment text and skills text will be very helpful during your practicum, for example. Another thing to keep in mind is that the library usually has a copy or two of books available which you may borrow or refer to. So, if you think you’ll only need to use a textbook for an essay, for instance, perhaps you should consider sharing a textbook with someone else from your cohort or borrowing it from the library. On the same note – keep the cue/recipe cards that you make for clinical, health assessment and skills lab as they will come in handy again! You may borrow instruments and assessment equipment from the Faculty of Nursing’s reception desk to take home to practice with or to use for clinical. Blood pressure cuffs, otoscopes, and many more things are available. Keep the date you need to return the equipment by in mind, otherwise, you will find yourself with a fine. You can also purchase printing credits from the front desk. Minimum $2.00 purchase of printing credit is necessary – cash only. You might feel scared coming into the Faculty of Nursing, but remember that everyone is going through the same experience. You will get used to the heavy course load. Creating study groups with your peers in your cohort will help you get through the material and to build friendships. You’re well aware that you should start studying for your courses as soon as possible. Exams like the skills demo can creep up on you, so make sure you’re fully using the time available to you in lab. Also, remember that most of your courses are more than 3 credit hours, unlike your prerequisite courses. For example, Health Promotion of Maternal Child Families (NURS 2240) is 6 credit hours in one semester. That means you’re learning twice as much information in one semester as you would in a normal (3 credit hour) class. Study accordingly and do not wait until the last minute. Always remember why you wanted to be a nurse. Remember why you wanted to be a nurse when you receive your first disappointing test mark, when you feel frustrated with the whole process, and when you are caring for your patients. Consider writing down all of these reasons so you can have a copy to look back to. Cultivate a strong support group. Become friends with fellow students (especially in your cohort) and get involved in student activities (e.g., the Nursing Student Association)! This may feel like too much to take on at first, but the support from friends and the student council will help you get through the program. On the same topic invest in your friends and family. They comfort you through the rough times and help you celebrate the good times and your achievements. 23 APPENDIX G Who we are: Senior Stick/CEO: Daniel Sushko Vice Stick/ Executive VP: Caitlyn Farr Secretary: Kateri Muys Treasurer: Courtney Paquette UMSU Rep: Jaqueline Robert Mentorship Chair: Evan Graham Programming Chair: Réjean LaBelle Programming Coordinator (Publicity): Susan Nanthasit Programming Associate: Danielle Koop Student Senator: Brittany Silverstein Senior MaHSSA Rep: Jace Lloyd How to contact NSA: In person: 222 Helen Glass Centre for Nursing Email: Senior stick: [email protected] or Vice Stick: [email protected] Website: http://nsa.umsu.ca Facebook: UManitoba Nursing Student’s Association Instagram: umanitobansa What NSA does for you: The Nursing Students’ Association would like to congratulate you on your acceptance into the Faculty of Nursing! Faculty of Nursing: Check out the Faculty website at www.umanitoba.ca/nursing. This includes information on faculty, different programs offered, announcement and course/curriculum updates. Skills Lab Videos are also accessible from this website. Here is a quick link: http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/nursi ng/current/undergrad/4year/course _management.html Uniform Guidelines: Clinical practice uniforms consist of all white scrubs with the UofM crest sewn on the left sleeve, all white shoes (not previously worn), nametag and a stethoscope. Scrubs can be purchased at the U of M Bookstore or other establishments that sell uniform pieces. Bring your student card with you if you visit these other establishments as you may receive a student discount. Make sure to do a “bend and stretch” test when purchasing your scrubs to test that they do not reveal your lower-back, and don’t reveal in the front with movements. It is also a good idea to invest in some nude-coloured undergarments. All tattoos must be hidden (you may wear a long white sleeved shirt under your scrubs). Jewelry and piercings must be limited to one simple stud earring per ear, a single nose stud, and a simple wedding band. Community practice uniforms consist of business casual clothing. Black dress pants, non-revealing tops and skirts that reach the knee level are considered appropriate for this rotation. Note: if a hospital staff member borrows your stethoscope during your clinical rotation, make sure that you get it back from them! It is easy for them to forget that the stethoscope they are using is borrowed! Crests and Nametag Crests can be purchased in the University of Manitoba bookstore located in University Centre. You can also order your nametag at this time too. Nametags will be passed out during class times. Please ensure you give both your first and last names for name tags. CPR Faculty of Nursing students must re-certify their CPR every year. NSA provides re-certification courses between the months of April and May. Check the website for upcoming dates. Best of luck throughout your studies in the Faculty of Nursing! We are looking forward to meeting you!
