Bounce Back - Building Resilience for Children and Young People

Bounce Back - Building Resilience for Children and Young People
Last Friday teachers worked with Professor Helen Mc Grath, co-writer of the Bounce Back Program that is being implemented in all classrooms at our school. Bounce Back is the term used to develop resilience in students.
Professor Mc Grath defined resilience as the capacity to cope with times of adversity or hardship (and often be strengthened by the
process). It is the ability to bounce back from difficult times to a fulfilling life while retaining a positive sense of self.
From this we see the need for our children to experience adversity to be able to learn the skills to cope when bad things happen.
It is only through experiencing, feeling, thinking, and acting, making mistakes and trying again that these skills can be learnt and
developed. We need our children to work through issues and be allowed to make mistakes and take responsibility for them from a
young age. Skills learnt and practised when young build independence and confidence. Learning to deal with conflict and hardship is a
normal part of learning about life.
This is sometimes difficult as parents when we believe our role is to protect and nurture. This though, is like wrapping them in
cottonwool and they fail to learn how to cope for themselves. We are not suggesting that children need to learn to cope without
support. This is the role of Bounce Back as part of our school curriculum. They need to learn strategies for positive self-talk and ways to
bounce back. Professor McGrath tells us that no research has proved that self-esteem makes a difference; rather we need to support
children to learn self-respect.
Bounce and Bounce Back acronyms are formed by the key principles underpinning the coping statements.
We will be trying to develop this consistent language across our school for dealing with issues as they arise. Please support
your child to build self-respect by using the statements to practice responding to issues. Let them make mistakes and learn
how to Bounce Back!
National Assessment Program
These annual tests for students in Year 3, 5 and 7 will be held from Tuesday to Thursday in the second week of next term. Students are
assessed on their Writing, Reading, Language and Punctuation and Numeracy skills over the 3 days. If a child is away on one day they
can make up a test on the Friday. Parents can withdraw students for family, personal reasons and principals can exempt students with
disabilities. Accommodations can be provided if organised in advance. Teachers and parents can discuss options at interviews in week
10. Alternatively please email me [email protected] if you would like to consider withdrawal, exemption or
specific accommodations. Paperwork is required for this by the end of the term.

During week 3, the year 7
students took part in a week long
leadership training program.
This week was designed to
provide students with an insight
into how the qualities for
successful leadership are relevant and useful in different fields.
In line with their term 1 unit of inquiry, ‘Leaders of the Future’, the
students heard from numerous guest speakers about the
importance of Responsibility, Cooperation, Communication,
Respect, Integrity, Team Work and Resilience, to the development of
effective leadership.
On Monday, they participated in a team building sports program,
called Sportshall, run by Nic Robertson. Through this opportunity,
they were able to experience shared leadership; adopting specific
roles in teams and reflecting on their success.
On Tuesday morning, they were
visited by Sergeant Jane Tan from
SA Police, who spoke with them
about good decision making and
leading in a community. In the
afternoon, Beth Dally, an
emergency care nurse in our
school community, spoke with
them about the consequences of
making poor choices.
On Wednesday, the students
watched the ‘Brainstorm’
performance, which dealt with
issues such as safe online
behaviour, and learning to control emotions in a positive way.
Following this, all year 7s learned strategies for practising Mindful
Awareness, to build emotional intelligence, focus and compassion
for others. They also listened with great interest to the experiences
of Andy Milazzo, a leader in the field of engineering, who spoke
about the importance of tolerance, team building and an open mind,
to effective leadership.
On Thursday, they
were very lucky to be
visited by Airlie Koo,
a gifted violinist in
our school
community.
Here, they heard
about her experiences in rising to the top
of her field, with an
emphasis on
persistence,
resilience and
seeking opportunity.
Year 7s have now been placed in their community service positions
for terms 1 and 2, providing an opportunity for them to practise
their new skills. Look out for them in the front office, the grounds,
the resource centre, the canteen and many more places around the
school!
The Year 7 team would like to sincerely thank all
of the guest speakers and parent helpers, who
helped to make week 3 a memorable learning
experience for all of our new school leaders .

I am Dilhani Daunda and I am a 3rd year social work student at the University of South Australia. I was a
junior primary and art and craft teacher for 13 years in my home country of Sri Lanka. As a social work
student I will support and encourage children to achieve their goals, and help them to develop their mental
health and wellbeing. My responsibility is to understand children’s needs, values and rights. Therefore, I will
be here to work and help them with their difficulties. Also I would like to assist them with activities such as
classwork, Art, PE, Music, and other extra programs run by the school. As a social work student my role is
educating, counselling, communicating, listening and helping children to achieve their goals. My placement
provides me with an excellent opportunity to gain more knowledge, experience and understanding of children and the
school environment in South Australia.
I have all the necessary clearance and training to work in a DECD school. When working with students I am supervised by
teachers and leadership staff who maintain duty of care.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s class teacher or Angela Elkin (Assistant Principal).
Kind Regards,
Dilhani Daunda
My name is Cat and I am a 5th year UniSA student at the tail end of my double degrees in Social science and
Psychological science, before my time as a university student I was also a mental health worker and a community art therapist.
I have all the necessary clearances and training to work in a DECD school and when working with students I
will be supervised by teachers and leadership staff who maintain duty of care. As a human service University
student my goal is to both learn through observation, but to also gain hands on skills within a school and in
some circumstances working one on one or in small groups.
With this in mind I have been given the great opportunity to utilize my skills as an art therapist and will be running a student
art therapy program throughout this school term. This workshop is a chance to integrate both my history within the visual
art field and my knowledge and skills of the social work practices, as to create an arts program that supports a holistic
learning environment with a focus on social, emotional learning.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s class teacher or Angela Elkin (Assistant Principal). We would love to
hear any feedback that parents may have concerning these circumstances and are happy to sit down and have a chat if
there are any concerns.
Kind Regards,
Cat
My name is Yi Jun and I am a third year Social Work student from University of South Australia. I will be
undertaking my field placement at Burnside Primary School over the next four months. I have completed all
my first and second year social work courses in university and am equipped with the theoretical knowledge
to underpin my emerging professional practice. As a social work student working at Burnside Primary
School, I am expected to practice my professional skills here. I will be working under supervision throughout
this period of time.
One of my roles is to focus on the students within the school environment and work collaboratively with
teachers to understand and respond to the personal, interpersonal and learning needs of all students.
During this period of time, I will be available to students as a supporter, listener, encourager and advocator. I will be visiting
classes and work alongside students and teachers to facilitate successful learning outcomes. I may be interacting closely
with students, helping them in their learning in class, doing one-on-one group work, and running group programs or
workshops to help students function effectively in school.
I have all the necessary clearances and training to work in a DECD school. When working with students I am supervised by
teachers and leadership staff who maintain duty of care.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s class teacher or Angela Elkin
(Assistant Principal).
