The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ
November 20, 2016
It is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Most families have wonderful
traditions, which usually includes lots of food, maybe watching a little NFL football, and hopefully
some family prayers of thanksgiving before the meal. The history of the first Thanksgiving has a great
deal of controversy to it. I have read some descriptions of the first Thanksgiving as very negative and
even very scandalous, which involves Europeans massacring many Native Americans, including men
women and children. Unfortunately, throughout American history, there were many conflicts between
Europeans and Native Americans, in which both sides have done unspeakable things to the other.
However, there were also many cases in which Europeans and Native Americans worked with each
other. One of these historical situations involves a Native American named Squanto.
In the early 1600s Squanto and other Native Americans were tricked into boarding a British
cargo ship where they were captured and brought to England to be sold into slavery. While being auctioned, a Monk saw Squanto and moved with pity, bought Squanto and brought him to the monastery.
There Squanto learned English and the culture of the Europeans. With the help of the monks, Squanto
secured his freedom and after a decade of living in different parts of Europe, Squanto found his way
back to the “New World.”
In September of 1620 a group of Pilgrims began their perilous journey towards the New World.
After enduring many months of bad weather out on the sea, the Pilgrims finally found their way to the
New World but were blown off course by all the storms they endured during the journey. After seeing
the New World for the first time, they attempted to sail south towards modern day Virginia but were
unsuccessful. They ended up landing on Plymouth Rock and shortly after saw Squanto for the first
time. Squanto boldly introduced himself to the wearier Pilgrims and taught them how to plant corn
and squash and how to hunt and fish. Just like St. Patrick and St. Boniface, Squanto ended up helping
and ministering to the very people who enslaved him. After many difficult moments, the Pilgrims
became very successful at taking care of themselves. On November 29th 1621 the Pilgrims enjoyed a
massive dinner that many consider the first Thanksgiving dinner. During their first years in
Massachusetts, the Governor at that time, William Bradford, and another Pilgrim named Edward
Winslow, wrote about the experiences of the Pilgrims, including the intentions of the Pilgrims when
they gathered for that particular dinner. They both wrote that the Pilgrims gathered for this meal to
thank God for keeping them safe during the journey at sea and for taking care of them through the land
that they were on, through the help of the Native Americans, and through the food that sustains them.
They believed that God helped them in many and used this meal to gather as one and thank God for
this help.
During Thanksgiving, I will be with my entire family in North Carolina, but Fr. Tim Foley will
be Celebrating the Mass at Immaculate Conception. Please consider bringing your family to the
Immaculate Conception Thanksgiving Mass at 9:00am. This Sacrificial Meal of God is the ultimate
Thanksgiving “Dinner.” The word “Eucharist” is a Greek word that means “Thanksgiving.” If you can
remember, each family is asked to bring some non-perishable food to this Mass. During the Offertory,
your family will then have an opportunity to bring up your offering and lay the food down before the
Altar of God. There is no better way to kick off your family Thanksgiving than with Jesus present in
the Eucharist.

design how such a chapter might work. If you would
like to be part of this latest chapter in the Society's

to counting cookies and boxing them up. There is
a job for everyone. You can sit and work if you
need to! Please remember we can use your donations of gift cards to Shop-n-Save or Sams. We
can use your cookie tins and plates. We can use
your
helping hands Dec 3rh, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 10th in
the parish center. Please order lots of these tasty
beautiful cookies for client gifts, family or office
parties. To place an order or for more information

Christmas Choir/All Ages
Please consider joining the choir for Christmas this
year. I am involved in the school masses and know
there are some very talented voices in our school.
I would really like to combine young and
experienced voices for the Christmas Choir this
year. We only practice once a week. Practices are
from 6:30 – 8:00pm every Wednesday. I have no
problem going over the kid’s parts first so they do
not have to stay for the entire practice. We already
have a wonderful adult choir. This year I would
like to add some children’s voices to the mix. New
adult voices are always welcome as well. This
choir would sing at the 11:00 am every Sunday
throughout Advent and the 10:00 pm mass Christmas Eve. Please consider joining us this year.
If you have any questions you may call me,

Immaculate Conception
Parish School of Religion
In today’s Gospel, we are reminded that Jesus always reached out to the people that society generally found
unimportant. Even while He hung on the cross, Jesus preached the Good News to the criminals hanging
with him. Sometimes we find ourselves teaching the Gospel message to our children even when the
majority view is different. Jesus’ words in this Gospel give us the courage to share our faith even when the
Gospel message is not the majority viewpoint.
Have a Blessed week!

Bellarmine Speech
Holy Child School served as wonderful hosts of their 1st Bellarmine Speech Meet in recent memory. This
was the first meet of the year and 11 schools participated in three categories of speeches including:
Humorous, Serious and Duets. Our children, teacher’s & parents did a wonderful job of showcasing all the
great things going on at HC. To top it off, our Speech Team took home 5 blue ribbons and 2 red ribbons at
this meet! Thank you to Mrs. Marshall, Mrs. Kargus, & Fr. Charlie for preparing our talented performers
so well! Great job HC!!!
Technology Update
Thanks to a generous donation from the Home and School Association (via Raffle sales from last year),
and the diligent work of Bruce Brunts, we are moving forward with our installation of a new, unified
wireless network. The network will be professionally installed and is designed to clear up spotty reception
and increase Internet speeds across the Holy Child campus. Affected buildings will include the Main
School building, Parish Center, Pre-K building, Rectory, Church and Preschool buildings. Building this
new network is a critical component of our technology needs. It will serve as a platform to begin adding
new and exciting technology to our classrooms.
Coming Soon
Beyond Sunday is an Archdiocesan program designed to ensure the viability of Catholic Education in “the
here and now” as well as the future! This program has already had a significant positive $$ impact on
schools across the Archdiocese via scholarships awarded last year. Holy Child School was the recipient of
a significant number of these scholarships.
Holy Child School in conjunction with Immaculate Conception Parish will soon be kicking off our Beyond
Sunday Campaign. This campaign has been implemented at Catholic parishes/schools for the past two
years. It was rolled out in phases. Those parishes in Phase 1 participated last year. Our parish/school is
slated to begin its campaign in Early 2017. Every Parish/School will take part in this campaign by next
year.
Beyond Sunday also awards grants to schools to finance capital improvements to parochial schools. Holy
Child for example, was recently selected as a finalist for a Beyond Sunday Grant written by Mr. Cullen
Brokaw and myself to update our technology infrastructure capabilities and to purchase cutting edge
equipment. Mrs. Wendy Haglin will head this committee and will posting more information in the coming
weeks. She needs “boots on the ground” to help facilitate this campaign. If done correctly, we stand to
profit considerably as a parish/school. Let’s come together to make Holy Child School viable for years to
come.

Check out "Men and Women are from Eden", the
great work of Saint John Paul II. This CD introduces us to the pope's warm, deeply biblical understanding of God's original plan for men and women, a plan that brings with it healing of mind in regard to sexuality and the body. You will find these
in the kiosk in the foyer through the center double
doors at the back of church.
