Establishing an Auditorium and Library for the New High Tech

Establishing an Auditorium and Library for the New
High Tech Tichon Net High School in Tel Aviv
Serving and enhancing the daily educational needs of the students and
faculty of this unique school
A PROJECT OF THE TEL AVIV FOUNDATION
Meeting the evolving needs of the City of Tel Aviv through the
establishment of Social Services, Educational, Cultural, Environmental
and Innovation projects.
The new Tichon Net High School, located in North West Tel Aviv, is about to revolutionize the Israeli
educational system. It will be the first school in the country in which students will be educated
completely without textbooks, pencils, and paper-based notebooks. Instead, the learning tools utilized
will be state-of-the-art hi-tech devices. Students will arrive to school each day with their "digital
backpacks" that contain their electronic notebooks and digital textbooks. Currently, there exists a
strong disconnect between how one learns in school and the technological world we live in. The new
Tichon Net's pedagogy aims to provide students with the tools necessary to operate in the digital age
while simultaneously developing young citizens who have a strong sense of personal and social
responsibility. Because the student of today is different from those in years past, curriculum must be
amended and geared towards a generation that communicates and obtains information with the press
of a button.
Students from various Tel Aviv-Yafo neighborhoods and socioeconomic backgrounds are slated to
attend this new unique high school. A municipal foundation will cover the cost of digital supplies for
low-income students. Each grade level will contain a special education classroom. The school contains
42 classrooms for learning and additional space for a gymnasium, library, auditorium, and
laboratories. The structure encompasses 161,458 ft² over a 140,000 ft² piece of land. The population
is expected to rise by 250 students each year reaching well over 1,000 students within its first 5 years.
The facility is modern and welcoming, with large classrooms each containing their own set of lockers
for students to store their computers. Each classroom will have an interactive projector, acoustic
ceiling, air conditioning, lighting instillations, tables and chairs.
The Microsoft Corporation partners with the school to provide Skydrives for online downloading of
class lessons and digital notebooks for students. From within the digital books, students can highlight
sentences, search via tags and search engines, superimpose maps, insert videos, notes, and attach
relevant articles by experts. Each digital book will be designed according to student's preferences and
needs. Test will be given online and the option to take online virtual courses exists. Through the use of
voice/video technology students will meet students from around the world to share research and
knowledge.
In addition to promoting academic excellence, Tichon Net’s culture will encourage a sense of Israeli
patriotism through the core Jewish-Zionistic values of personal commitment to society, community,
and the State. The students of Tichon Net will one day give back to society through contributions to
Israel's many industries including medical, high tech and advanced education.
THE NEED
The Municipality in partnership with the Tel Aviv-Yafo Foundation is looking to establish a state-ofthe-art school auditorium complex and library center for the Tichon Net School in order to serve and
enhance the daily educational needs of the students and faculty of this unique school. The idea
exchange, research, and sharing allotted by these new facilities will allow for optimal learning to
occur. The state-of-the-art auditorium and library center will provide school personnel with the space
and supplies necessary to further student academic growth, development and potential.
The Auditorium: The 320 seat state-of-the art scenic auditorium, located in the main 1st floor level of
the school, will feature a large glass window behind the stage that faces the dunes of the
Mediterranean. The facility will provide a location for student performances, concert recital space for
musically inclined students, performance space for dancers, and a large venue for integrated academic
lessons. Specialized audio/video devices will be installed to employ shared learning experiences
amongst international sites of hi tech academia.
The Library: The new Tichon Net library Center, located on the pedestrian entrance level, is designed
to be a locale of research based learning, idea sharing, and information gathering. The library will be
fitted with tables and chairs for large and small group learning and private workstations for individual
learning. Computer stations will have audio/visual internet connections for research and synchronous
online learning. Bookshelves will contain reference materials, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and digital
books.
The Eliakin Architectural firm designed the floor plans for the creation of an auditorium and library
for the new Tichon Net School. The state-of-the-art complex will provide school personnel with the
space and supplies necessary to further student academic growth, development and potential.
