Sam Houston Area Council 2016 Popcorn Sale Unit Kernel Guide www.shac.org/popcorn www.popcornordering.com SHAC website: SHAC Facebook: SHAC Phone: www.samhoustonbsa.org www.facebook.com/shac.bsa 713-659-8111 Thank you for your participation in the Sam Houston Area Council’s 2016 Fall Popcorn Sale. Each year the sale achieves three main objectives for our organization. The sale raises over $850,000 for our units within our council and gives us the opportunity to instill a strong work ethic in our youth, encouraging Scouts to earn their own way to activities and events. Thanks to the fact that over 70% of the sale comes back to Scouting, our annual product sale is a huge resource for our local Scouting program. By participating in the sale you not only guarantee your unit a good revenue stream, but also guarantee that prices for programs stay low, that camperships continue to be available for Scouts, and that services and training are available for your leaders. On behalf of all our members, thank you for your leadership and involvement to this important program. The five ways to sell, selling tips and safety tips will give you everything you need to sell like a pro. 1. Take Order This is the most traditional way to sell. Scouts go door-to-door with the take order form, supplied their leader or the district. The customer chooses the product(s) he or she wishes to buy and writes the order on the form. Scouts are encouraged to collect payment with the order and inform the customer about the delivery time frame. 2. Selling Online This is the best way to sell to your friends and family who live out of town. You can acquire a unique 10 digit code along with a note to your customers asking them to purchase CAMP MASTERS products online. They order products online and pay with a credit card, and CAMP MASTERS ships the products directly to your customers. Online sales count toward prizes and incentives from August 1 – November 1, 2016. No product delivery or money collection. Ability to reach your friends and family who live far away. Think viral, encourage family and friends to ask three more friends to support Scouting in your community. 3. Selling at Work Parents take an order form to the work place. Co-workers write their order on the order form and collect the money. The parents deliver the popcorn a few weeks later. Expands your customer base Offices often need snacks and gifts. Explore businesses that purchase gifts for employees. Selling Tips Safety Tips Wear your uniform. Smile and introduce yourself. Tell your customers why you are selling popcorn Know the different kinds of popcorn you are selling. Say "Thank You", even if they don’t make a purchase. Sell the Program: People buy popcorn to support the Scouting program (they do realize that they can get the popcorn cheaper at Wal-Mart, but also realize that they cannot buy the Scouting experience for a young person through popcorn at Wal-Mart) Don’t ask people IF they will buy, ask which level they would like to support your Scout, with the various popcorn products and prices representing the various levels. Visit more people—Most people who do not buy popcorn, do not buy because they did not get asked…over 80% of people will buy popcorn when asked! Over 90% of people who buy popcorn from a Scout have made up their mind to support Scouting before they have even seen what the Scout is selling! 2016 Popcorn Unit Kernel Guide Page 5 of 15 NEVER enter anyone's home NEVER sell after dark unless you are with an adult DON'T carry large amounts of cash with you ALWAYS walk on the sidewalk and driveway ALWAYS sell with another Scout or with an adult Revised May 2016 Popcorn Deadlines Popcorn and Prize Order (Due November 1, 2016) Popcorn orders and prize orders must be placed on the CAMP MASTERS website by November 1, 2016 at 4:00 pm. No part of this presentation may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any electronic or mechanical means, including photocopying, recording, or by any information storage or retrieval system, without the permission of the author. 1) Be Neat! - You will make a great impression if you are in your class A uniform. Wearing your uniform when selling gives an impression of professionalism and shows people that you are proud of what you are doing. 2) Be Prepared: Learn the presentation below and don’t change it. Your presentation should never be, “Do you want to buy some popcorn?” That question all too easily leads to the one word answer, “NO”. People will not be purchasing from you because you asked them to. They will be buying from you because YOU will have created a relationship with them very quickly and they will want to help you and the scouts. 3) Maintain Eye Contact! This is very important. Maintaining eye contact shows that you have confidence in yourself, your product, the program, and your group. The Presentation Tell them who you are: “Hi sir / ma’am, my name is ______________________ (First name only!) Continue with the group you are representing: “and I’m a scout with pack / troop ________” Tell them what you are doing: “We’re selling popcorn to help raise money for our Pack / Troop.” Tell them what they can do for you: “You can help us by buying some of our delicious popcorn. Now get the sale by telling them to buy in a question: “You’ll help us out, won’t you?” _________________________________________________________________________________________ Hi sir / ma’am, my name is __________________________, and I’m a scout with Pack /Troop __________. We’re selling popcorn to help raise money for our Pack / Troop. You can help us by buying some of our delicious popcorn. You’ll help us out, won’t you? __________________________________________________________________________________________ 3) Always Be Polite & Courteous: You will be surprised by how many people who will tell you “NO” just to see how you handle the rejection. You will be even more surprised by how many people who will change their answer to “YES”, just because you were polite and professional in the face of rejection. 4) Thank Everyone: Even the people who don’t buy. Just saying, “Thanks for listening”, will often cause people to change their mind. 5) Keep Moving!: If you are selling at one of the commercial locations (Acme, Wawa, etc.), you must continue to move and talk to people. Don’t assume that they will walk up to you, they won’t! The more people you approach, the more you will talk to, and the more sales you will make. 6) Keep Smiling: Do you like grumpy people? Neither does anyone else. Keep a smile on your face. 2015 Popcorn Unit Kernel Guide Page 15 of 15 Revised July 2015
