CHATTANOOGA HOUSE OF PRAYER ! Dear Praying Friends of Chattanooga: ! ! Monthly Prayer Guide for the City THE NATION: Obviously with the 4th of July, it’s good to remember our nation in prayer. Christ called us to make disciples of all nations (not just neighborhoods or individuals around us). Therefore, let us pray fervently for our country, and work to make it His. For these prayer points, we’ll be taking excerpts from America the Beautiful, which was a prayer for our nation originally published as a poem to commemorate the 4th of July. ! Pray: “America! God mend thine ev’ry flaw, / Confirm thy soul in self-control, / Thy liberty in law.” Being independent is a beautiful thing. Without it, we cannot be the perfect image of Christ that each of us were made to be. However, independence requires tremendous self-control, not being a law to ourselves, but being instilled with the law of God’s love on our hearts. Pray we would be filled with self-control and free from personal enslavement to anything, and not merely free to be slaves to things we cannot control about ourselves. ! Pray: “America! God shed His grace on Thee! / And crown thy good with brotherhood / From sea to shining sea.” If we are too strong in our love and value of independence, we will lose one another and harm relationships, dividing ourselves in a way that will keep us from standing. Let us seek God to crown our good (independence in this case) with brotherhood across the entire nation. ! Pray: “America! May God thy gold refine. / Till all success be nobleness / And ev’ry gain divine.” Our best qualities must be refined by God. Our best without God will miss the mark of all we are called to be. We must have God’s mercy and blessings poured out on us to be the nation we are called to be. ! ! DENOMINATIONAL CONVENTIONS: Whether you’re a fan of church denominations or not, they are making influential decisions at their national gatherings this summer that will affect our communities and the way pastors and lay ministers carry out their jobs on a local level. • Pray for leaders of denominations—they’ve humbly asked us for this—that they would be filled with God’s cheer and power, live Godly lives, be protected, and would avoid temptation, and the pride of the Pharisees and Sadducees. • Ask God to bring revival to struggling denominations. • Pray for good relationships in denominations: evangelism that loves outsiders to the faith well, and brotherly love among all who already know Christ. • Ask God for unity among the churches, for collaboration that benefits their communities and this country—that their collective strengths would work together as the various parts of the Body should. CHATTANOOGA HOUSE OF PRAYER Monthly Prayer Guide for the City CHATTANOOGA SPEAKS: This event, recently hosted at the Camphouse in downtown Chattanooga, was an open forum and panel discussion concerning issues affecting our city featuring Dr. Franklin McCallie, Mayor Andy Berke, CPD Chief Fred Fletcher, Moses Freeman, Michelle Peterson, Dr. Eleanor McCallie Cooper, James McKissic, Linda Wiley and and James Chapman. ! Please pray for these individuals as they are, will continue to be, and desire to be, influential in our city. While this was not a religious meeting we want to back them up with our prayers, and take action wherever God leads us to help transform our city. ! ! Prayer Points that were the Topics of Most Concern During the Meeting: • Pray over things that divide us socially: economic, racial, cultural differences. There were also exhortations for embracing discomfort, social awkwardness, and for being intentional about developing relationships across these lines. • Ask God to give us the social boldness, wisdom, sensitivity, and forgiveness to cross these lines. • Ask God for people who would use their personal influence in small but positive ways. • Ask God to help us think of and make intentional decisions to alleviate poverty in our city. • Continued economic development: • Ask God to prosper us in growing our small businesses, and Chattanooga’s “local feel” as a unique community in the Southeast. • The continued safety in and around Chattanooga is a concern. Ask God for crime, rioting and danger to be kept far from our city. This is important for our continued prosperity in every area of life. • Pray for job opportunities for those with criminal records. God help those who really are looking to start over; grant that they would bear fruit in keeping with repentance (Matt 5:8). Pray for business leaders to be willing and well equipped for hiring and loving these new employees. • That God would grant multifaceted, complex solutions that only He can bring: • Government (at all levels) working efficiently and cooperatively. • For churches to be actively engaging the community on personal and corporate levels. • For good relationships between police officers and troubled communities. • For real solutions to be found and enacted for our education system. This is desperately needed. • Ask God to grant hope for the future in communities of little hope where they no longer have belief that things can change. ! ! Thank you for praying. As always please send us testimonies of ways you’ve seen God work. We are grateful for all of you as we collectively seek the good of our city. Your prayers are working! Keep up the good work of intercession! -Chattanooga House of Prayer Staff At ChattHOP our mission is to participate in the city-wide transformation of Chattanooga by modeling, resourcing and equipping the Body of Christ for sustained and unified prayer, worship and outreach.
