The Sequal News 2016 Setting Lively Minds Free (incorporating the Trustees’ Annual Report and Accounts for the year ending 31st March 2016) Registered Charity Jim's new Voice No. 260119 45 year old Jim who lives in a Residential Home in Worthing, has been disabled from birth, being diagnosed with Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. Jim has very little natural speech, has learning disabilities and extremely limited movement in all his limbs meaning that he relies on a wheelchair at all times. Despite these difficulties, Jim lives a very full life – he has a mischievous nature and loves the company of others, especially that of his brother who takes him on activity holidays where he can take part in assisted climbing, canoeing, sailing and archery. Jim is an extremely sociable man and so attracts friends through his friendly, outgoing nature. Although he lives in residential care, Jim goes home at weekends when various members of his family are also there and he is very lucky to have such loving support. However, as he is unable to communicate verbally, Jim relied on gesture, facial expression and body language to get his message across. Whilst those who know him well could mostly interpret his requirements, he found it difficult to communicate with people who were new to his social world and so he needed someone familiar with his form of communication to interpret what he wanted to say. Jim has an excellent sense of humour and loves to laugh with people but needs to be able to ‘talk’ to be able to socialise and interact more. His situation was so frustrating for all concerned and Jim badly needed some form of assistive technology to provide him with a ‘voice’. As Jim himself indicates “I love talking! For making decisions I use eye pointing and I will choose an item by looking at it” Last year he was referred to a Speech and Language Therapist in order to explore the possibilities of using an augmentative device and Jim took to a tablet which was eye operated and could be attached to his wheelchair for full-time use. The device provides so much more than a means to communicate though – Jim is able to take and store photos of his family and to listen to the music which he loves, on the web. Apparently Jim is a great fan of Status Quo and so it is very likely that his room at the Home reverberates to their music! Sequal was able to provide this system for Jim and whilst it has taken him some time to get to full grips with all it offers, he now finally has a means with which to fully express his needs, to be more independent in interacting socially and to give full rein to his cheery sense of humour! The Sequal Trust, 3 Ploughman’s Corner, Wharf Road, Ellesmere, Shropshire, SY12 0EJ Tel/Fax: 01691 624222 Email: [email protected] Website: www.thesequaltrust.org.uk Hannah Helps Many members will recognise this lovely smiling face as Hannah who has been a member of Sequal since she was a little girl and who is our Publicity Ambassador – for the very obvious reason that she is so photogenic and has such a happy smile! Hannah has Cerebral Palsy and uses a Tobii assistive device to help her communicate. Hannah’s mum Jackie, who is a Sequal Trustee, knew that as Hannah utilises her communication device so well, she was more than capable of gaining employment where her abilities could be put to the best use. With this in mind, Hannah completed a year’s Works Skills course with Pure Innovations, an organisation which promotes independent lifestyles by providing support to people with a disability, and they found her voluntary work at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport. Hannah’s parents provided her with an assistant to help her through her day as a ‘Meet and Greeter’ in which capacity she sits at the Help desk and having input all the areas of the hospital on her Tobii device, she is able to tell people how to get to where they want to go. If the route is a complicated one then Hannah will accompany them in her wheelchair to ensure that they reach their destination. Hannah started there properly last September and it looks very hopeful that the position will turn out to be a permanent one which makes Hannah very happy as she loves helping people, being determined that having Cerebral Palsy will not deter her from achieving what she wants to do. Jackie tells us “Hannah absolutely loves it, it makes her week. We are so proud of her, she's an inspiration for others and it just shows how anyone with a disability can achieve whatever they set their mind to”. At the end of the course, Hannah achieved an Entry Level 3 Open Awards qualification in Further Learning & Employment Skills, a wonderful addition to her CV. It is great that Pure Innovations and Stepping Hill Hospital recognised Hannah’s qualities and offered her this opportunity to be such a helpful and integral part of their community and Sequal is only too happy to have been able to provide Hannah with the means with which to complete her duties and so set her ‘Lively Mind Free’. AGM - A Diary Note Sequal’s next AGM will be held on Thursday 30 th June 2016 at 11.30 a.m. at The Holiday Inn, Solihull. If you would like to attend, please contact the Sequal office for further details. Trustees’ Report - Review of the Year The Sequal Trust came into existence almost 50 years ago, founded by a group of people who understood what it was like to have difficulties in communicating with other people, both at first-hand and by living or working closely with these problems. The aim of the organisation was to ensure that everyone who needed vital augmentative equipment would be able to obtain it and the training required to use it to enable them to have a ‘voice’ and a means of communication – a very basic thing which most of us take for granted. The range of equipment available to help in communicating is now amazing, and there really is a way to communicate for everybody, although finding the right piece of equipment is not always easy, and the cost can be prohibitive to families whose resources are already stretched by other needs. NHS England now have a separate budget for communication, and have set up regional ‘hubs’ which service the most complex cases and their aim is to assess needs, provide suitable AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) aids, and provide training on those devices. The remaining people needing help are still applying to their local authorities. This is a major breakthrough which we support in every way and we have been in contact with all the hubs to let them know that we are here to help with funding in cases which don’t meet their own criteria. At the moment, due to this newly developing service, referrals are slower in coming through to us although, from speaking to parents and carers we know that some people are still having problems getting the equipment they so urgently need. However, it is still early days and some of the hubs are still being set up. We are hoping that The Sequal Trust can step in where needed and continue to provide the aids to communication which can change a person’s life and open up all sorts of opportunities previously denied to them. Throughout the year our staff have attended various disability exhibitions and we have also been to Communication Matters road shows which are attended by suppliers, SLTs, and Parents Groups. We are very pleased to announce that we have appointed two new Patrons during the year, Roger Jeffcoate and Lee Ridley. Roger has been involved with Sequal right from the start, being the leader of a team who invented and developed the ‘Possum’, the original aid to communication, at Stoke Mandeville in the early 1960’s. He worked closely with the other founder members, and also went on to launch other healthcare and disability charities. Lee is also known as ‘Lost Voice Guy’ and has proved an inspiration to people with no natural speech in his career as a stand-up comedian! Lee has cerebral palsy, and uses a Lightwriter and iPad to project his act, which won the BBC New Comedy Award in 2014. We are proud to have Lee on board and applaud what he has done Thank you to everyone who has supported us this year. We really appreciate your continuing support, which makes it possible to do what we do and give people ‘a voice’! Every donation is vital to us, and we are very grateful. Thanks to all the fund giving organisations who are so generous and to every individual who has donated. Especial thanks to those who have organised events via Just Giving, which not only helps financially but also increases the profile of our charity. The donations we receive make it possible for us to provide communication equipment to those who really need it, and we thank you all so much and hope that you will continue to support The Sequal Trust in the future, and help us to ensure that everyone in the UK has that precious gift of ‘speech’. Our aim is to provide every one with a means of communication as a basic right, and we will continue, with the help of our supporters, to try to fulfil this. Do you also know……about the aids, opportunities, or advice and information available to the disabled community? The Disabled Living Foundation is a national charity providing impartial advice, information and training on independent living since 1969. It is a founder member of the Information Standard, a certification scheme for health and social care information. They have built up over 40 years an unparalleled range of information on daily living equipment and other useful advice for people who might need some help in living their lives to the full. With a huge range of equipment available, sometimes it can be confusing. How do you know what is available? Where do you go to buy equipment? How do you know what is right for you? How do you know if a supplier is reputable? DLF provides all the answers to these questions. You will be amazed at the sheer inventiveness of some of these tools for living. You can put your cat’s dinner on the floor without bending down, you can remind your mum who has a memory problem to take her keys as she goes out of the house or you can trek up hills even though you cannot walk. But far too many people don’t know that these items even exist, never mind where to get them or how much they might cost. That’s why DLF is so important, their advice and information reaches everyone and provides individuals with options rather than just opinions. Whether you’re finding certain tasks a bit more difficult as you get older, have a disability yourself, or you know or care for someone in this situation, DLF can help. More is possible than they – or you – might think.
