An amazing crew of actors, singers, producers, and musicians created a wonderful trip down memory lane in which we honored Ken Sperling and the community he built around CBJ Players. It was a beautiful evening. • We learn Torah. As Jews, we are heirs to one of the world’s great wisdom traditions. Whether at Bread and Torah on Saturday morning, or in one of my classes, or in one of the myriad adult ed offerings we have, or through our religious school, or at one of many family programs, we learn Torah together. We explore the depth and breadth of Jewish tradition – everything from cooking, to mysticism, to civil rights to Broadway, to Israel. Our lives are richer and more meaningful because we participate in a conversation that spans centuries. • We do gemilut hasadim, deeds of I was, however, disturbed about one lovingkindness. Some people find community at our daily minyan; The comment made me realize that we some people find it in the gift shop; some should, perhaps, clarify, the mission of people find it working side by side with our synagogue. We are a Kehilla, a sacred one another on a committee; some find community. What does that mean? Many it on Shabbat, and some find it at the things to many people. The synagogue is CBJ Players. At B’nai Jacob, there are continue to believe that people lack prayer services twice daily; Shabbat is two things most of all: community and filled with music, song, Torah, and, of meaning. At difficult times, people find themselves deeply grateful to have a community to hold their hands. From the Rabbi I really can’t imagine my life without synagogue and Jewish community. I hope you can’t either. But, if perhaps you look at this list and say, “Well, there is nothing here that interests me,” I would ask you to consider the following questions: do you think an institution that does the things listed above should exist in Woodbridge, CT? Should the Jewish sick be visited? Should Jewish children have a place to learn Judaism? Should there be a community where people celebrate and mourn together? If the answer is yes, then the reason to support this synagogue and to make sure it is here for generations to come is obvious. Last week the JCC, as all of you know, suffered a terrible fire. Thank goodness no one was hurt, but the damage to the building will take a long time to assess and repair. Within less than 24 hours of the fire, staff from the JCC was onsite at B’nai Jacob, figuring out if we could move Yeladim, the day care center, here. Over the course of three days, moving trucks arrived; furniture came and went; rooms were childproofed; inspectors inspected, and by Friday morning at 7am we opened our doors to 80 children who found a new temporary home at our synagogue. That is what community is about. We all should be proud to be part of this community. We should all know how lucky we are that the people who came before us had the vision to build this wonderful place. We should make sure that we do our part so that generations hence, Jews will continue to find kehilla, sacred community, here. We continue to have wonderful adult education programs, Bread and Torah, Shabbat Schmooze, and twice daily Minyan. Please consider joining us for these wonderful and important activities. As always, we really need your support. The success of our community rests on the desire of our members to engage with the congregation. To that end, we can really use more volunteers. We have many ways for you to get involved. You don't need to sit on a committee to help out. If you have some time and would like to help, let us know what your interests are, and we can figure out the best way for you to get involved. I am always happy to hear from you with the good and the bad. Please feel free to reach out and let me know how our synagogue can do more for our community. Board Notes Endowment Fund Update Endowment Fund’s Importance The B’nai Jacob Endowment Fund is vital for the current and future success and survival of our synagogue. Over the years, on behalf of the committee of trustees, I have written articles on the various ways you can participate to ensure the long-term viability of B’nai Jacob. We’re getting better, but it’s still not enough. Collectively, we need to support the Endowment Fund not only while we are alive, but also in our estate planning. A strong and successful endowment will help ease both the short-term and long-term financial burdens of the synagogue’s operating budget. Thank you to those who have already contributed and have included the Endowment Fund in your estate plans. For those who haven’t had the opportunity yet, I invite you to contact me, our Office Manager, Lynn Estra or any of the other trustees with any questions or comments. As I’ve already mentioned, the Endowment Fund plays a critical role in B’nai Jacob’s annual budget, contributing $85,882.58 in fiscal 2015-2016. This crucial revenue source has the significant challenge of trying to remain stable or even grow during a period of record low interest rates. As the needs of an aging infrastructure increase over time along with declining membership, so will the reliance on the Endowment Fund. Endowment Fund Investment Overview The Endowment Fund is run by a committee of trustees elected at the annual meeting by synagogue members in attendance. The trustees have chosen to hire a professional investment advisor who assists with overall asset allocation as well as institutionalized our investment process by diversifying the fund not only among asset classes (stocks, bonds, currencies, commodities), but also with different strategies, levels of risk and time horizons. As of September 30, 2016, the B’nai Jacob Endowment Fund is: • Valued at $3,064,704, an all-time high • Assets allocated 56% Fixed Income, 39% Equity, 5% Alternatives • Invested in 12 independent strategies plus two loans to B’nai Jacob Recent performance: • 2016 (through 9/30) • 1 year • 3 year • 5 year +9.86% +9.46% +3.04% +4.89% The B’nai Jacob Endowment Fund currently sits at all time high, before donations are taken into account. As the synagogue’s need for funds continues to grow, along with the fact that all dividends and interest are transferred from the fund to the operating account, it has been challenging at times to be able to deliver our goal of absolute returns, stability, and sufficient income in a longterm, record low interest rate environment. The investment process currently in place is sound and should deliver respectable longterm results to B’nai Jacob. Our Endowment Fund, your Endowment Fund, continues to grow, contribute, and be successful because of the hard work and dedication of the current committee of trustees as well as their predecessors and our professional investment advisor, Paul Schatz. I want to thank them along with my predecessor, Allen Lipson, for making my job so much easier. Respectfully submitted, Jerry Berg, Endowment Fund Chairman David Eder Ike Goodrich Susan Kaufman Jim Shanbrom Trustees 5 A Note from Malachi Cantor Malachi Kanfer The death of Leonard Cohen in early November deeply affected me. His poetry and music has comforted, challenged, and intrigued me since my first introduction to him as a teenager. In 2010, taking a break from college and nursing a broken heart, I remember sitting in a yurt at an avocado farm in California, listening to Leonard Cohen and regaining the strength to go out and pick avocados, and eventually return to college! Like liturgy, my connection with his words have grown as I have grown, too. An observant Jew, Cohen would have been a fantastic liturgist. His songs are quests for truth, testaments of human frailty and mortality, and ballads of praise - all the while being unafraid of discomforting or unsettling feelings. It's the stuff of great liturgy. In the recent congregational album, I used Pet Blessings his “If It Be Your Will” as an introduction to the Kol Nidre liturgy. His most recent album, “You Want it Darker,” released weeks before his death, is a powerful, searingly beautiful and Jewish work in which Cohen unflinchingly contemplates his impending death. On the title track, Cohen proclaims “hineni” - here I am, the call of our biblical patriarchs- “I'm ready, my Lord.” Cantor Gideon Zellermeyer echoes Cohen at the end of the track, supported by his choir. The rest of the album continues on similar themes. As clergy, death and illness is an ever present force in my life, and I draw inspiration and resolve from talking with the terminally ill, who face death with grace, courage and love. Cohen faced his death in the same way. And so, a quick plug: Barry Zaret and I will be presenting a program on Leonard Cohen, his life, his music and poetry on Saturday, April 29th at 4 pm. Please mark it in your calendars! This fall, we had a special event for our pets, giving blessings for a year of good health and relationships with the humans who care about them. 6 Be a Minyan Maker! At B’nai Jacob we are proud to have services each morning at 7:45am (9:30am on Sundays) and each evening at 6:00pm. It takes less than a half hour to perform this important mitzvah. This is essential for those who are saying Kaddish after the loss of a loved one or on the anniversary of the loss of a loved one. A minyan is necessary for the recitation of Kaddish. More participants are needed at morning and evening services. Please help make the minyan by performing this mitzvah! Thank you! Run by teachers, madrichim, parents, 7th graders, and our Israeli emissary, these activites gave each student a chance to: Make a Hanukkiah Play a Hanukkah memory game Unscramble the words of candle blessings Make (and eat) an edible dreidel Dig up and decode ancient pottery Create aa 3-D dreidel Eat a latke Play a game of Maccabian gaga Throughout the morning, we heard music by Tzvi and Cantor Malachi; and the program ended with the ever popular game of Hanukkah-style ‘Coke and Pepsi.’ Special thanks to Adam Dworkin for organizing the latkes, and to all the parents who helped cook, serve, run an activity, clean up, or just came to enjoy the morning with your child. December 3, 2016 marked a very special night in the history of Congregation B’nai Jacob. This celebration of Ken Sperling’s legacy on BJ Players left a lasting impression on all 275+ in attendance. For the creative and production team, committees and synagogue staff who worked for months putting this production together, the resulting effort, was a true labor of love. Guided by Ken’s love of theater, B’nai Jacob, and community, this show included live narration, film clips, photos, skits, songs, and memories that recaptured the emotions, excitement, music, magic, and ruach of the 25-year Ken/BJP era. Looking back, every individual who was part of this remarkable event is still, “taking it all in.” And from all accounts, the overwhelmingly positive energy of the evening still reverberates in our heads and in our hearts. “Classy," "tasteful," "hit just the right note," "moving," and “creative" --were the most frequent buzzwords and compliments we received. The cast, creators, and crew remain humbled by these accolades. Yet, we also feel blessed to have been part of something this genuine, loving, joyous… and successful. Applause, bows, and curtain calls all around!! 12 At Home 13 In the Community B’nai Jacob hosted this year’s Woodbridge Community Interfaith Thanksgiving Service The Woodbridge Community Thanksgiving Interfaith Service was held on Monday evening, November 21 at B’nai Jacob. It was attended by approximately 180-200 people from all religious institutions in Woodbridge. Cantor Malachi conducted the choir, comprised of members from all the various organizations. Readings and sermons were also shared by representatives from different houses of worship. I have been a member for several years, and my major responsibility has been our efforts for the homeless, specifically, Abraham’s Tent. For those of you who don’t know what Abraham’s Tent is, here is a brief explanation: The religious organizations in the area get together and house a total of twelve men and women for the winter. The people spend a week at each institution. We partner with Spring Glen Congregational Church in Hamden. See right column for more about this. The other thing that our committee has been doing is the Mitzvah Garden. We plant and care for vegetables in a garden at B’nai Jacob. It is across from the entrance to Ezra. When we harvest the crops, we bring them to local food banks. There are a lot of food banks in the area. I have been bringing food to the Seymour Food Bank. Every time I bring something there, they are extremely grateful. They don’t get a lot of fresh vegetables to offer to their clients. This is another easy effort that gives you a smile on your face, and you do a mitzvah for others. The name of our committee could easily be called the Mitzvah Committee. Everything that we do is a mitzvah for someone. Doing mitzvahs is our obligation as Jews. There are many ways The thrust of this letter is to get all of we do mitzvahs. Being an active part of you involved in our social work for the this committee will help you accumulate community. Everything that we do always the mitzvahs you should be doing every leaves us feeling fulfilled. The problem we day. usually have is that there is only a handful of us that gets all the pleasure. I just feel There are so many more things that we guilty, not having the whole congregation should be doing to help the community. get the same joy that I do. I would welcome everyone’s input. I would also ask, plead, and beg, that I want all of you to look forward to each of you get involved. We are a very helping all the many people in our fortunate group of people; we can’t forget community that can use our help. Not or minimize how important it is for us to everything takes up much time. Some give back to the community. things are only a few hours in duration, and you only have to commit to doing Just remember, that you will never regret it once. (Of course, I would love for the time you spend helping others. A little you to do things many times, join our effort can make a big difference in the life committee, become a co-chair with me!! of others. And at the end of the day, it will But, I would be happy to see you get the leave you feeling very good about what warm, fulfilling feeling that even two you have done. hours of social action can give you.) We have been supplying volunteers to the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen for years. Kal Watsky is our coordinator in this mitzvah. The second Sunday of each month is our turn. We report there at 4:30pm and have completed our volunteering by 6:00pm. We start by standing behind a table and serving the people. After dinner has been served, we wash the tables where the people have eaten, stack the chairs, and finally sweep the floor. That is it. Not much to do, but what a feeling it gives you to help those that so desperately need our help. 16 Call me; email me; stop me when you see me; just get my attention. I need all of you to get involved. I just want all of you to get the feelings that I always get when I help others. Gary Leibowitz [email protected] 203-887-8435 Volunteer to help serve the homeless.
