NEW TO CLIFTON KNOLLS
OR MILL CREEK?
FROM THE EDITOR
First things first... Thanks for reading!
We hope that you are off to a good
start for 2013. There are a lot of things
coming up in the next few months for
the residents of Clifton Knolls and Mill
Creek. First up is the Daddy Daughter
Dance on February 9th. On March 2nd
we will be having our annual (Not Just)
Wine and Cheese Party. And, please
come join us for the CKMCCA Annual
Meeting on April 10th. All the information for these events can be found in
this edition of News and Views.
As always, we welcome any comments,
suggestion or contributions (we would
love some contributions, please!!). Contact us at [email protected]
First of all, welcome to our
neighborhood, which is now your
neighborhood. Many of us have been
here since the neighborhood started in
1960, and some of us have only been
here a few years. But one thing we all
have in common is wanting to live in
a neighborhood that is clean, safe, and
reflects our pride in living here.
The Clifton Knolls-Mill Creek Civic
Association has been a part of the
neighborhood since August 1962. The
CKMCCA is not a homeowners association that everyone must join, and
imparts universal requirements, like
mailbox styles. We are a true civic association—our goal since our inception
has been to make our neighborhood
better by fostering a sense of community.
To that end, the CKMCCA sponsors
a number of events in our neighbor-
hood, from the Halloween parade and
party every fall, to the neighborhood
garage sale every year, to the summer
picnic, winter wine and cheese party,
and college scholarship. CKMCCA also
publishes this newsletter (which goes
to everyone in the neighborhood), and
the annual directory (which only goes
to dues-paying members of the CKMCCA).
As someone who is new to our neighborhood, we ask you to contact us to
give us your contact information to put
in the next version of the directory, and
to provide us with your e-mail address,
so we can get in touch with you between issues of the News and Views. In
re-turn, we’ll give you a free copy of the
latest
CKMCCA Neighborhood Directory,
regardless of whether or not you join
the Association. Thanks for choosing to
live in our neighborhood!

MEETING SCHEDULE
The CKMCCA regular board meetings of the
2013 membership year will be held on every
second Wednesday of the month between
the months of September through June.
We will send out an e-mail regarding the
location of these meetings, and post them
on CKMCCA.org as well. Meetings start
at 8:00pm, and typically run 60-90 minutes, depending on the number of items
on the agenda. All are welcome to come
and participate, be it to suggest something
that would enhance our neighborhood, volunteer to help
in one of our existing events, or to raise an issue or two.
E-MAIL NEWSLIST
The News & Views gets published four to five times a year. Often times, there are
things that arise between publication dates, and more and more, e-mail is the best
way to get quick messages out. The Civic Association has an e-mail distribution list of
about 400, but most of those are from individuals who have paid their Civic Association Dues. As paying dues is optional—but highly encouraged!—we don’t get e-mail
addresses from most of the approximately 900 homes in Clifton Knolls and Mill
Creek.
In the past, we’ve used it to alert residents about power and flooding issues, send a
head-start on leaf pickup, as well as reminders on neighborhood events. If you would
like to be put on the e-mail distribution list, please send an e-mail to mailinglist@
ckmcca.org.
Be assured that your e-mail will not be used for commercial purposes or spam, and
when neighborhood-wide messages go out, all e-mail addresses are hidden, so people
won’t be able to get everyone’s e-mail addresses. Thanks for your cooperation—e-mail
really is the quickest way to get messages out these days.

The Halloween Parade held on October 28th was a brisk, but dry day. There were
many children in costume (along with some adults!). We were lucky to have the fire
trucks come along. The route was changed this year due to the sewer work on
Barney Road. The parade ended at Locust Lane with Halloween treats and Mr. Twisty!
Santa once again came for a visit this year. Since his sleigh was being serviced at the
North Pole, he toured our neighborhood on a decorated trailer. All the children that
came out to see Santa were given a candy cane and a “Ho! Ho! Ho!”.

Welcome to MICRO VIEW! It’s the place

read, write and share. Have a story or
article you’d like to share? Submit it! All
entries are welcome and we will do our
best to print them here.
Last issue one of our questions was
“When do you think we will get
our first snow storm?” There were no
guesses, but I bet a lot of you would’ve
said “December 25th!”. And if that
was your guess, you would not have
been too far off! We didn’t have a white
Christmas but we were lucky enough
to get a good amount of snow for the
rest of the holiday break from school.
Did you take advantage of all the snow
the week you had off from school? Let’s
hope we get some more to play in soon!
WoRlD RECoRD snoWMAn
Maybe you built a snowman over your
break? I bet it wasn’t 122 feet, 1 inch
tall, though! That is the world record
for the tallest snowman ever built,
according to the Guinness Book of
World Records (and it was actually a
snow WOMAN).
“Residents of Bethel, Maine, USA, and
surrounding towns, built a snow woman
measuring 37.21 m (122 ft 1 in) tall,
over a period of one month, completing
her on 26 February 2008.”

STAR GAZING
ORION THE GREAT HUNTER
One of the largest and best known
constellations is standing over us during
these long winter months.
It is the brilliant and majestic Orion.
In Greek mythology, Orion was a
hunter, the son of the sea god Poseidon.
His constellation is easy to see as a man
raising his club and shield, facing the
charge of a bull, represented by the
neighboring constellation Taurus.
Orion is rich in celestial objects -- and
you only need a warm coat to view
them!
He is home to two of the sky’s brightest
stars, has one of the best known multiple star clusters, his belt is located on
the celestial equator and he also hosts
by Amy Smith
the Orionids, his annual meter shower
held each October.
Go outside around 9 pm and look
towards the east. Let’s begin by looking
for his belt, which is the easiest way to
locate him. The Arabs called this the
‘string of pearls’.
Look for three equally bright stars, in a
slight upwards line, as shown below.
Hanging from his belt is his sword.
The sword is also known as Trapezium
Cluster and includes a famous nebula in
its middle.
The middle ‘star’ in the sword is not
actually a star but rather a cloud of
glowing hydrogen gas called a nebula.
Deep within this swirl, hundreds of
suns are forming from the clouds
that make up this celestial nursery.
Astronomers cataloged it as simply
“M42,” but most stargazers know it
as the Great Orion Nebula. The
Orion Nebula was first studied with a
spectroscope in 1864. A spectroscope is
a device that can aid in determining a
star’s age by its color. It is estimated that
what you are looking at is 1350 light
years away - meaning the light hitting
your eye left in the year 662 AD.
Now look to your upper left where his
shoulder would be. Notice a bright
reddish star named Betelgeuse. Betelgeuse is Arabic for ‘the Hand of Orion’.
Betelgeuse has a diameter of approx.
640 million miles and is 700x larger
than our sun. To give you a sense of its
massive size, if Betelgeuse were our sun
its outer edge would extend to the orbit
of Jupiter! Betelgeuse’s red color defines
it as a dying star (a red giant due to its
immense size) but don’t worry, it will be
around for another million years.
Looking to the lower right of the belt
is the luminous blue-white star Rigel,
making Orion’s knee. Rigel is Arabic
for ‘left leg of the giant’ and is the 6th
brightest star in our sky. In 1831 it was
discovered Rigel was actually a binary
star system (Rigel A & Rigel B), and
may even be comprised of 4 stars! Rigel
A is considered a middle-aged star and
resides 850 light years away from us.
So if you find yourself bored, channel
surfing on one of these clear January
nights, grab your coat, get outside, and
look up! Spend some time with Orion
and enjoy what he has to show!

who have served the US Submarine Service.
If you have an organization or group that would
be interested in this subject, I have ten of these
talks and if you e-mail me back I will send you a
synopsis of each talk, my contact information and
bio. These presentaions are not technical in nature
but are powerpoint presentations about missions that
the submarine service undertook, especially during
the cold war era.

CKMCCA ANNUAL
MEETING
The CKMCCA Annual Meeting will
be held on Wednesday, April 10. It is
traditional at this meeting to have a
speaker or topic that is of interest to
everyone in the neighborhood. This
year, in support of the 50th anniversary
of the first house being built in Clifton
Knolls, we’re going to focus on the
history of the neighborhood. We’re
planning on asking Clifton Park
Historian John Scherer to give a short
presentation, but what we’d REALLY
like, is to hear from you, our neighbors. Sharing stories about what the
neighborhood used to be like, how the
neighborhood was built, etc. are what
we’re looking for. For many neighborhood newcomers, these stories will
really add a sense of history to our great
neighborhood.
If you, or someone you know, might
be willing to participate in a panel or
roundtable about the history of Clifton
Knolls (and yes, Mill Creek too!), please
send a note to [email protected] or
call Bryon at 253-7287.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS:
CKMCCA Annual Scholarship Award 2013
Your annual dues to the Clifton Knolls/Mill Creek Civic Association helps our neighborhoods have the children’s Halloween party,
have the adult wine and cheese party, and publish this newsletter and our annual directory. For the past several years, it has also
granted a scholarship to a different deserving neighborhood student each year.
The CKMCCA is again offering a $500.00 scholarship award to recognize an outstanding high school senior who shows academic
achievement, extracurricular activities, and involvement in the community. Besides showing these characteristics, the other requirements are that the student must live in the Clifton Knolls or Mill Creek neighborhoods, and their family must be dues-paying
members of the Civic Association. Students are eligible regardless of the school that they attend, or even if they’re homeschooled.
To apply for the scholarship, high school seniors are required to submit a letter describing their qualifications and interest in receiving the scholarship. Because the scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and civic involvement, it would be wise to include this information in the letter. A copy of the student’s most recent high school transcript is also
required. Other information, such as letters of recommendation, could prove helpful in the selection process, but are not required.
Applications are evaluated and ranked by a group of business, governmental, and academic leaders in the Capital District. They are
not members of the Civic Association, to ensure their impartiality.
If there are questions regarding the scholarship or the application process, please contact: Bryon Backenson, 8 Eldorado Drive
Clifton Park, NY 12065. 518-253-7287 [email protected]
There is no formal application form. The application consists of the letter/essay, transcripts, and optional supporting documents.
These should be submitted to Bryon Backenson at the address above by March 15, 2013.

CLIFTON KNOLLS/MILL CREEK CIVIC ASSOCIATION
UPDATE FROM YOUR CLIFTON KNOLLS/MILL CREEK
PARK DISTRICT ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Hello Neighbors,
Your Park District Advisory Committee is one of two different volunteer
organizations in our development that
help to keep our community as well run
and beautiful as it is. The CKMC Civic
Association is the other.
If you are a regular reader of this newsletter, you are aware of the many social,
service and civic activities that the
CKMCCA provides that enhance the
quality of life in our community. Fun
events like the Halloween Parade and
Party, Neighborhood Picnic, and Wine
& Cheese Party are anticipated every
year. Community members appreciate
the many avenues of communication
that the board of the civic association
has made available to us such as this
newsletter, ckmcca.org, the directory,
etc. These are only examples of the
many things that the CKMCCA accomplishes through your civic association annual dues.
The Clifton Knolls/Mill Creek Park
District Advisory Committee is responsible for keeping the fields, playgrounds,
ball playing courts, ponds, pathways,
perennial gardens, most entrance markers, trees and shrubs, benches, and fencing up to date and in good condition.
Improvements recommended each year
by the Park District Advisory Committee are paid for from the Town from
monies collected from your tax assessment. Any project undertaken by the
park district must be approved by the
Clifton Park Town Board. We look for
direction for any improvements from
the surveys we have received from residents. The Clifton Knolls/Mill Creek
Park District Advisory Committee
meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday
of most months in Town Hall. You can
check the schedule at cliftonpark.org
Community Calendar.
Both community groups described
above also attend Town Board meetings
to advance community interests such as
our input concerning the town purchase
of the golf course.
Here are the projects that have been
completed this year by the Clifton
Knolls/Mill Creek Park District Advisory Committee:
The area behind the tennis and basketball courts which had been cleared, has
now been reseeded and several new trees
have been installed. Other new trees
in other park areas are also at Barney
Pond, Barney Peninsula and Locust
Lane Field.
The area behind the three post and rail
fencing on Belmonte Lane has been
cleared to enable a lovely view of the
meandering stream below.
The tennis backboard was rebuilt and
installed. Four plastic chairs are provided in the courts.
A stonedust pathway has been installed
around the back of the courts for easier
access.
Weather permitting, we will attempt
a new ice rink on Locust Lane Field
instead of on the basketball court.
Pathways around the ponds have been
improved once again by cutting back
impeding branches and remulching.
And a new stonedust pathway access
was installed on lower Broadleaf from
the road to the pond.
The rusted fencing behind the Beechwood Playground has been replaced.
A number of benches have been added,
repaired and or reset, and all benches in
the park have been power washed.
The areas along the roadways on Broadleaf and Par Del Rio have been reseeded
and grass is growing.
Residents helped to water and care for
the planter boxes on entrance markers
and /or newly planted additions to the
perennial gardens. A special THANK
YOU goes out to Doreen Croteau,
Bill and Nancy Connor, Sheila Suozo,
Claudia Hroncich, Kathy Anselment,
and Pat Miller.
Watch out for a bubbler to be installed
in the northeastern edge of Barney
Pond to help clear the pond scum.
We continue to keep the playing fields
much cleaner and attractive with the
added work of our goose chaser. We still
have geese to observe and enjoy but the
huge numbers that seemed to take over
our grounds are kept to a minimum.
We thank the residents of our community for their wonderful support.
So often we receive compliments about
the good looks of our park areas. Our
landscapers: Cliffsides Landscaping,
A-Z Property Management and A
Cut Above Lawnscapes have all done
outstanding jobs caring for our trees,
shrubs and perennial gardens. We
would highly recommend these companies to our residents as hard working,
dependable and skilled workers. We
would also thank the Buildings and
Grounds Department for their help
in mowing, and many other repairing projects that the park committee
requests.
Sincerely,
Members of Clifton Knolls/Mill Creek
Park District Advisory Committee:
Kathy Anselment, Pat Brackins, Claudia
Hroncich, Ron Johnson, John Laviano,
Marlys McGinnis (Finance Officer),
Pat Miller, Loretta Parsons (Secretary),

Once your ideas for the remodeling

It is always a good idea to ask for

Many of us are so very fortunate to

If you have hardwood, are your

Gleaming hardwood

How is your landscaping? If it could
