Dear Parents,
We would like to welcome your child back to school after the Easter Holidays.
This is the outline of the curriculum that Year 5 will be following this term:
Literacy
Numeracy
Science
 Reports- The children will be writing Newspaper reports about a strange happening
involving flying pigs! The children will also be working with a professional journalist
developing their skills even further.
 Stories from other culture- The children will be reading the Jungle Book as a class text.
They will be writing openings, descriptive pieces, developing their use of phrases and other
techniques when writing.
 Explanation Writing- the children will be writing to explain using language specific to the
subject.
 Film Narrative- The children will be studying a film and converting it into a narrative piece
of writing.
 Round any number up to 1 000 000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1000,
10 000 and 100 000.
 Count forwards or backwards in steps of powers of 10 for any given number up to
1 000 000.
 Multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers, supported by
materials and diagrams.
 Compare and order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same
number (including on a number line).
 Continue to read, write and convert time between analogue and digital 12 and 24-hour
clocks.
 Complete, read and interpret information in tables, including timetables.
 Solve problems involving converting between units of time.
 Understand and use approximate equivalences between metric and common imperial
units such as pints.
 Solve comparison, sum and difference problems using information presented in all
types of graph including a line graph.
 Distinguish between regular and irregular polygons based on reasoning about equal
sides and angles.
 Use the properties of rectangles to deduce related facts and missing lengths and
angles.
 Identify 3-D shapes, including cubes and other cuboids, from 2-D representations.
 Compare and classify geometric shapes, including quadrilaterals and triangles, based
on their properties and sizes.
 Distinguish between regular and irregular polygons based on reasoning about equal
sides and angles.
 Identify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or
translation, using the appropriate language, and know that the shape has not changed.
 Divide numbers up to 4 digits by a one-digit number using the formal written method of
short division and interpret remainders appropriately for the context.
Forces- We will be investigating air resistance, water resistance, friction, and recognising that
some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have a greater
effect.
Animals including humans- describe the changes as humans develop to old age.

Spain
 The children find out more about where Spain is situated, identify some of the human and
physical features and learn more about the Spanish culture. Also the children will be writing
letters, designing and creating fact files as well as trying Spanish foods.
 Ancient Egypt
 Children will learn more about Ancient Egyptian times using secondary resources and
artefacts.
 The children will learn about different Gods, Egyptian life, Art and Hieroglyphs.
 Art Skills
 The children will be focusing on making clay sculptures and creating a textile piece.
 The children will be designing their own animation using Zoo3D. The children will plan and
then create scenery and props to use in their own animations.
 Our PSHCE topic this term is ‘Keeping Healthy and At the Movies’.
 In RE the children will learn about Women in the Old Testament and Islam.
In music we will be using the theme of ‘Keeping Healthy and At The Movies’.
 Indoor P.E. will be Cheerleading with our Sports Coaches. The children will be swimming at
Westhoughton Pool.
 PE will be taught on Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings. Please make sure your
child has their indoor and outdoor kits in school all week. Your child will need a swimming
kit on Friday.
 Through learning how to say where they live, talk about the weather and ask for items in a
shop or café/restaurant, the children will be learning about masculine and feminine nouns,
some prepositions and will become aware of the position and agreement of adjectives.
Homework:
Homework will be sent home every Friday to be handed in on Thursday, at the latest, the following week.
Spellings and/or Multiplication Tables will also be sent home on a Monday and tested the following
Monday.
The children must ensure to bring their Spelling Book into school on this day and bring their
Reading Book and Record every day to school. Children must remember to change their book every
week.
