MetalSkin® Solid Expandable
Cased-Hole Liner Isolates Thief Zone
to Re-Establish Water Injection of
80-Year-Old Well
Objectives
Location
California, USA
Well Type
Water injection
Hole Angle
6° to 8°
Casing
7-in., 26-lb/ft K-55, ID 6.276 in. (159.4 mm)
• Isolate the perforations in a thief zone to re-establish effective
injection rates and pressures. Production in this field, first
produced in the early 1920s, is enhanced with a secondary
waterflood oil-recovery project that commenced in the 1970s.
Water-injection profile tests on the 708 well indicated a thief
zone in the interval that was taking 61% of the injected water.
Lost production of wells in the flood pattern was estimated at
40 BOPD for the previous 12 months.
• Prepare the wellbore for potential establishment of a
waterflood project below the formation currently being flooded.
Liner
• MetalSkin cased-hole liner:
5 1/2-in., 17-lb/ft VM-42
• Pre-expanded ID: 4.892 in.
(124.3 mm)
• Post-expanded ID: 5.488 in.
(139.4 mm)
• Pre-expanded length: 328 ft (100 m)
• Post-expanded length: 309 ft (94 m)
Liner Setting Depth
5,895 ft (1,795 m) MD
Work String
2 7/8-in. PH6 P110 tubing
Products/Services
• MetalSkin cased-hole liner system
• Fishing, tubular running, and
completion services

• Caliper log inspection of the casing and blank-pipe
spacing between perforations in the thief zone indicated
minimal to slight casing wall loss below the injection
packer, which was set inside the 7-in. casing at 5,590 ft
(1,704 m). The expansion cone, designed for 7-in., 26-lb/ft
casing, was used to compensate for the casing wall loss
and to ensure an adequate hydraulic seal.
• A short MetalSkin liner was installed as a packer seat
from 6,350 to 6,370 ft (1,942 to 1,935 m). This measure
would allow the operator to run an injection packer
through an upper MetalSkin liner and set it deeper in the
well at a future date if needed.
• The upper MetalSkin liner (5-1/2 × 7 in.) was successfully
run from 5,560 to 5,895 ft (1,797 to 1,625 m) and then
expanded to isolate the formation perforations and
re-establish effective injection rates and pressures.
Tripping in hole with running tools and the
5 1/2-in. MetalSkin cased-hole liner on the
operator’s 708 well. This MetalSkin system
answers mature-field challenges by permanently
repairing corroded or parted casing. Elastomer
seal elements give more reliable zonal isolation
than cement squeezes, and they do not
significantly reduce well ID as do scab liners.
• The operator installed a new injection packer just above
the upper MetalSkin liner and resumed water injection.
Value to Client
• Water injection rates and pressures are higher than
before the MetalSkin installation, and injection surveys
indicate that there is no longer injection into the thief
zone, which should ultimately restore oil production to
rates recorded before the sharp decline.
• The success of this operation demonstrated the
effectiveness of the MetalSkin cased-hole liner, giving the
operator a new cost-saving option for repairing many
similar wells in this 80-year-old field to substantially
increase overall production.
