Basketball Rules Tuckahoe Family YMCA (804) 740-9622 www.tuckahoeymca.org Coed & Girls 9/10 Year Old Divisions Winter EQUAL PLAY: All players should be given equal time in each game and an equal opportunity to start and play all positions. A player must play in both halves, and no player should play a full game unless necessary (5 players available). Teams play 5v5. TIME: There will be 2 – 20 minute halves. Players must enter game from designated area (scorer’s table). Clock stops on all whistles in final minute of each half, unless a team is winning by 15 points or more. Each team has 2 (30 second) timeouts per half. All games are final at the end of regulation even in the event of a tie. DEFENSE: Any defense will be allowed. Double-teaming is allowed within the 3 point line. Full court pressure is only allowed during the last 2 minutes of each half. If a team is winning by 15 points or more, they are not allowed to apply full court pressure. Players can steal the ball off the dribble. Fast breaks are allowed. There will be no “Free Zone” in this age division. Once the offensive team advances past half court, the defense is allowed to apply pressure. OFFENSE: Walking/Traveling - Player cannot move more than one step with the same foot without dribbling the ball. Traveling will be called closely, and result in a change of possession. Player holding ball for 5 seconds without moving or passing, and player standing in the lane for 3 seconds - team loses possession. The Offensive team must cross mid-court line in 10 seconds from taking ball out of bounds. Offensive team should immediately run back to defensive position when defensive team gets possession of ball (cannot steal in the back court unless full court pressing in the last 2 minutes). After a made basket or on an inbounds play, offensive team must pass ball in from behind end line. BASKET HEIGHT: 10 feet BALL SIZE: Women’s Ball 28.5 REFEREES: 2 referees will be appointed for every game and will serve as officials and backup instructors. FOULS: Player should play the ball, not the player. Tripping, pushing and jumping into an opponent will result in a foul and possession change or foul shots. Fouls will be tallied. A player totaling 5 fouls must leave the game. Penalty for ejection for unsportsmanlike conduct by a player or coach will result in immediate 1 game suspension (the next scheduled game) and a meeting with the League Director before they are allowed to participate further. (Flagrant Technical Fouls and Direct Technical Fouls by a Coach for unsportsmanlike conduct are all under the jurisdiction of the penalty above) a) Flagrant Technical-malicious behavior or intent that will result in harming another player. This can be deemed a fight with contact, w/o contact, taunting or rough play and is at the discretion of the officials on site. b) Cursing is unsportsmanlike conduct and is subject to the judgment of the official which may lead to a technical foul or immediate ejection from game. c) 2 technical fouls are an automatic ejection. FOUL SHOTS: One and one at the 7th team foul per half. At the 10th team foul 2 shots will be taken (double bonus), 3 shots if player is fouled beyond 3 point circle. Foul shots will be taken 1 ft. in front of regulation line. Foul Shot lane violations: All Players, including the shooter, may not enter the lane until the ball hits the rim. No arms above the shoulders. No clapping or talking to the shooter. JUMP BALL: A jump ball will take place at the start of game. Any jump balls during the game or the start of the half will follow the alternating possessions. COACHING: Coaches should remain on sidelines at all times in the designated coach’s box. Max of 2 coaches on sideline per team. If coaches are repeatedly warned, the team will be assessed a technical foul. Substitutions should be kept together on sideline and be prepared to enter the game quickly from the scorekeepers table. Coaches under no circumstances should direct any negative comments to referees or children. OUT OF BOUNDS: If a ball goes out of bounds or a player steps out of bounds with the ball, the opposing team gains possession. 3-SECOND LANE VIOLATION: There must be team control of the ball before the 3 second count goes into effect. When a player has one foot on the line or in the lane the count starts. If ball is in flight, the count stops. FIVE SECOND COUNT: Player with possession of the ball in the front court is closely guarded while stationary, dribbling stationary or moving in an east – west direction. Once the player in possession dribbles in the direction of the basket the count stops. BACK COURT VIOLATION: Once front court has been established (all three parts - both feet and the ball must land in the front court). After the front court has been established, if the ball or a foot lands in the back court then a back court violation occurs. SLAUGHTER RULE: If a team is up by 15 points or more, the opposing team must stay within the lane area (essentially 3 pt. line) and play a zone to defend. If a team violates this rule, a technical foul will be assessed. GYM RULES: No Drinks/Snacks are allowed in the gymnasium at anytime Spectators are to remain on the sidelines at all times and are to act in an appropriate manner Use of abusive or inappropriate language is prohibited and will result in immediate dismissal out of gymnasium All spectator children are to be supervised by an adult of at-least 18 years-old.
