There will be no pre-distributed list of study words. At the competition, each
participant will be asked to spell a randomly-selected word. If correct, the
participant moves on to the next round. If incorrect, the participant can stay in
the competition by giving the correct definition of the word. If the participant
gets the definition right, he/she will be given another word, which he/she
must spell correctly in order to remain in the game. The winner is the person
who remains in the game the longest. Participants who are rude, disrespectful
or disruptive will be asked to leave.

All about Spellbulary:
History
Spellbulary was started in 2005 as a fun and
competitive event to encourage spelling and
vocabulary. An annual competition, Spellbulary is a
huge and popular event as it is Hong Kong’s only
citywide Spelling bee. Not only do we test spelling
but we also include a vocabulary component in the
contest. This event usually attracts hundreds of kids
and parents.
AgeLevels
Your child will be automatically placed in one of
four age levels: Group 1 Ages 6-7, Group 2 Ages 89, Group 3 Ages 10-11, Group 4 12-13.
HowtostudyforSpellbulary
Unlike previous years, there will be no pre-distributed list of study words. This is to
avoid the widespread student cramming for the event that occurred last year. Instead, we
will do a few practice rounds in each of our KYP classes to get the students comfortable
with the rules of the game. We also have attached the list of study words from LAST
YEAR--this list is only to be used as a rough guide so that you can have a sense of the
difficulty level of the words. The words on the list may not necessarily be the same words
used this year. Chances are, they will not be the same and only a few words may reappear. So please do not memorize this study list. Use it only as a guide.
Here are some other ways to study for Spellbulary:
z Read frequently and acquire a good vocabulary base through reading.
z When you encounter a word you do not know, look it up.
z Keep a journal of new vocabulary words and review the journal frequently.
If possible, make flashcards.
z Make studying for Spellbulary a family activity--test each other at the dinner
table and have practice rounds at home with your parents.
z Have fun!
