CAPE History Exemplar
Unit 2. Paper 02
Comnen op Resppjqq to Ouetion 1
This is a document based item which requires candidates to demonstrate understanding of the
significance of the Treaty of Tordesillas and its later implications for relations among European
nations. In addition students are expected to be knowledgeable of how rival nations succeed’ in
breaking Spain’s trade and territorial monopoly.
This exemplar is illustrative of the type of understanding brought to the task for a candidate’s work
to be deemed exemplary.
The candidate outlined the signatories of the treaty and noted the
specifications of the treaty in Part (a) of the item. The candidate did a good job in specifying the
reasons for the attack on the Spanish fleet in Pan (b). the strategies used to “supplant” Spain in the
West Indies (part c) and the consequences of the rivalry (part d).
