Memorabila Display in the Hall kindly loaned by Bill Stone from Burekup
Highlights of the Festival were the Hall – great display of
WW1 and Dardanup photos as well as memorabilia, Red
Cross display and school students artwork. The new attraction
– the clydedales put on a great working display and the local
art exhibition saw 6 works sold – a record and the art looked
good in the new location, the Clubrooms on the oval. New
activities - Suitcase Circus, Old Mc Donalds Farm, Free Run
boys and Sumo wrestling drew big crowds and the Down of
the Farm Arena showcasing 7 breeds of animals was very
popular. The Kids free Craft marquee saw 860 craft kits used
to produce some amazing creations and lots of fun had by the
littler ones with playdo, colouring in and play in the ball tent.
The fire sculpture created by local Russell Sheridan, and ably
assisted by Rob Gardiner was awe inspiring and burnt for such
a longtime which was a real treat for the thousands there.
Another wonderful celebration to end our 13th Festival.

unusual visitors, a Barking Owl called Oska and a Brown

The birds were there to take part in a rehearsal for a City
of Perth project conducted by Loren Kronemyer. The
rehearsal involved introducing the birds to two horse
riders, Chanti and Matt and their beautiful Percheron
horses.
Chanti and Matt were shown how to balance the birds on
their wrists so that the birds felt secure. Once the birds
became accustomed to being held by strangers, Chanti
and Matt mounted their horses and walked with the birds
accompanied by their trainer, Yvonne. Both Oska and
GT and the horses were not disturbed by this strange

Dale’s morning coffee catch up
Bonking Frog Winery Owner Julie Hutton
with “meet n greet” dog Winnie.
Bonking frog? It’s a great name isn’t it? It’s the
common name for the Western Banjo Frog which
lives happily on our property!
So you’ve been recharging over August, what is in store for
us come spring? There is lots happening – we are working
with a master sorbet maker in Perth to develop a wine sorbet.
On Sunday November 22nd, we have an open day where the
wine sorbet will be showcased. Initially we will trial 4
flavours; including SSB, Rose and Merlot. We will use the
open day to gauge our customer’s preference, and from this,
perhaps reduce to two. The invite is open to customers both
old and new to come along and taste.
Patrons may bring a picnic and relax in our garden. There are
also private functions held here so the garden is well used.
What’s happening in the vineyard at the moment? We are
currently doing shoot thinning. This is carried out to reduce
crowding in the canopy and subsequently reducing the chance
of diseases developing.
You grow the one variety, merlot? Yes, Merlot is our
passion. Originally we had 10 acres, with the first 5 acres
planted in 1996 but then decided that we either had to get big,
or stay small and exclusive, so out came 5 acres of vines. The
reduction in size makes the vineyard more sustainable for us
and is more manageable for Phil and I to run.

Also we produce one white wine as well as our Merlot, the
“Foreigner” SSB. These grapes are outsourced from other
growers but we do make the wine.
Our first commercial crop was produced in 2008 and we
opened our cellar door in 2010.
Vigneron’s recommendation – Any of our merlots of
course…. all are popular but our recommendations would
vary on our customers preferences and the food they’d like to
match with it.
As well as our cellar door, our wines are available thru
Boyanup Cellars, Bull and Bush Tavern, Condello’s, The Rose
Hotel, Frankel Street Liquor and Eaton Cellarbrations.
Bonking Frog’s best asset – Our name, it’s catchy and stands
out on any wine list.
On accommodation? There is one cottage. Our guests usually
use it as a central take off point for exploring the Geographe
wine region. We are generally booked out on weekends.
What’s great about having a business in the Dardanup
Times locale?
The whole Geographe wine region is developing and the local
area is becoming extremely popular. Our location is a strong
point, there is a large amount of passing traffic so we get
visitors who see our directional sign and pop in to do a
tasting.
Would you like your tourism business to be included in the
Dardanup Times monthly coffee round?

The 2015 ANZ Geographe Wine Show judging panel was led
this year by Jane Faulkner, of Winematters. Jane is an
experienced wine judge, chairs numerous shows both
nationally and internationally, and is currently chief of judges
at the Australian Alternative Wine Variety Show.
Much praise was heaped on the high standard of the wines
entered in this year's shows. The judges were very impressed
with the alternative varieties from across the Geographe
Region, in particular the Chardonnay. But equally the
Tempranillo, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties, and
blends all shone as well.
The judging panel included Glenn Goodall, Winemaker for
Xanadu and Peter Bradbeer, Liquor Barons. Associate Judges
were Brigitte Rodda, Assistant Winemaker, Willow Bridge
Estate and Michael Hartley, Sommelier.

Guinea pigs make fantastic pets when handled regularly. They bring them in for a yearly health check as health issues such as

common health problems are preventable.
Housing should provide a minimum of 30cm x 60cm floor
area for each guinea pig however the more the better! The
floor should never be wire as it damages their delicate feet.
Always provide a deep layer of soft bedding such as hay,
newspaper or pine shavings and clean it out twice a week. It
should be protected from the elements and guinea pigs love to
explore their environment so provide lots of toys such as hidey
castles, plastic tunnels, hay nests, food balls and other toys.
When guinea pigs are really happy they will squeak contentedly and may even “popcorn” with joy. For some fun enrichment
ideas, check out our Facebook page! Take care when the temperature goes over 28・C as guinea pigs are particularly susceptible to heat stroke. Provide lots of shade and frozen water
bottles or even better, bring them inside.
Guinea pigs need a minimum of 1C fresh dark leafy green
vegetables in their daily diet. Vegetables that are particularly
high in vitamin C include parsley, broccoli, kale, asian greens,
capsicum, spinach and silver beet – these are great for preventing scurvy as guinea pigs are unable to produce or store vitamin C. Fibre is also important for maintaining gut and dental
health so be sure to allow free access to good quality hay.

Garden Matters with Erika Mc Manus
Spring is an exciting time in the garden, with many trees and
shrubs in full blossom, followed by a burst of new leaves
which will transform your garden completely! With this warm
weather, plants are putting out new growth in leaps and
bounds, so now is a great time to fertilise all your plants, plus
your lawn! Also, now is the time, before the hot weather to
check that your soil isn’t repelling water, ie; it runs off and is
not absorbed into the soil! If this is the case, apply a good
“Wetta Soil” product! I use Baileys Grosorb as I find this is
most effective tho more expensive. This job needs to be done
before applying your mulch, which is a must before summer
arrives, so that we conserve as much moisture as possible during our hot weather! Pea-straw makes a fantastic mulch, and
as it breaks down, adds nitrogen to the soil! Remember to
keep any mulch away from the stem of the plant to avoid collar-rot!
Herbs, fruit & vegetables*****There is a lot of concern
these days about genetically modified food, and many experts
are advancing the case for chemical-free produce. This is
more than a trend, and there is no better way to get on the right
track than grow your own food! Indeed, there are many people who are quiet participants in a backyard revolution, growing their own herbs, fruit and vegetables. The possibilities are
endless; a patch of taste-laden, vine ripened tomatoes, an old
fashioned strawberry patch, the simple pleasure of picking
parsley from a pot near the back door, and the list is endless!!!! Planting fresh crops of herbs in spring will ensure a
summer harvest of annuals such as coriander and basil. Plant
basil around your tomato plants, as it is an effective companion plant, repelling whitefly and other pests! If in a unit, grow
a tomato plant in a pot, surrounded by basil! (there’s no excuse!!!) It’s all go in the vegie patch in spring as the ground
warms up, so plant lettuce, tomatoes, capsicum, beetroot, eggplant, radish, peas, carrots, cucumbers, corn, melons, pumpkins, zucchini, and the list goes on! Also a good time to plant
all herbs. Grow a Blueberry in a pot or plant a few in your
vegie garden, making sure they are in dappled or early morning sunlight, plus they need an acidic soil, so if planting in a
Help Needed
pot, use Azalea & Camellia potting mix. Grow a fruit tree,
whether it be a citrus tree, stone-fruit or an apple tree, nothing
beats the taste of fruit ripening on the tree, plus no chemicals
have been used! If you don’t have room, there are many dwarf
varieties available now! Grapes are easy to grow and with
many seedless varieties available, kids will soon love picking
their own bunch of grapes. Nothing beats the taste of fresh
passionfruit squeezed on ice-cream or add to fresh fruit salad!
Plant raspberry canes or Kiwi fruit vines, remembering you
need a Male vine which will pollinate up to nine Female
vines!!! Whether you have a big, productive garden or a few
herbs in pots, you will still get the same joy when picking your
produce! So if you have nothing growing to eat, give it a go,
have fun and enjoy your rewards! Remember to liquid fertilise regularly to get the most out of your crop, especially lettuce which need to be grown quickly, else they become bitter.
Virburnum opulus sterile….SNOWBALL TREE****A
snowball tree is a deciduous shrub that is also known as a
“guilder rose” which grows to approx.. 4m in height and
width. Thrives in moist, rich, well-drained soil in a sunny to
part shade position. This shrub likes cold or cool winters.
Water regularly as this plant cannot tolerate prolonged dryness. This shrub doesn’t really need pruning except for obvious dead or tangled parts. Enjoy the flowers which begin
green and turn white when they reach full size, and will cover
the entire shrub, making it an outstanding feature in the garden! Mulch well.
Spring is a busy time in the garden, with planting, weeding,
mulching and much more, so don’t forget to take time, stop,
and enjoy all your hard work during the year! So until next
month, keep cool and HAPPY GARDENING!

Don’t be distracted – turn off your phone while driving

Increased bushfire risk prompts burn permit ban
RoadWise Committees across the South West and Peel
Regions have banded together to drive home the message that
distracted drivers, in particular those who use mobile phones
while behind the wheel, need to change their behaviour.
Committees from the Shires of Dardanup, Collie and
Bridgetown-Greenbushes and Cities of Bunbury and
Mandurah have joined with police to crack down on drivers
who text or talk on the phone while driving.
Statistics show that almost one-third of all crash fatalities and
serious injuries in WA involved driver distraction.
Using the slogan “M8 the call can W8”, the campaign has
expanded from just two Local Governments in 2014
(including the Shire of Dardanup) with last year’s campaign
resulting in a positive response from motorists.
Ratepayers in the Shire of Dardanup have re-elected three of

Committee chairwoman Betty McCleary.
“Mobile phone use while driving is not exclusive to younger
generations with people of all ages taking risks by either
texting or talking on the phone.
“Our message is that it is not the end of the world if you miss
one call or a text message, but it could be the end of your way
of life if you are distracted by your phone and are involved in
a crash.
“We want to spread the message and ask that drivers turn off
their phones before driving.”
Bumpers stickers with the “M8 the call can W8” slogan will
be available across the regions to help drive home the
message.
Eds Note; M8 the call can W8 stickers are available at the
Shire offices.
A range of environmental factors pointing to an increased risk
of bushfire over coming months has prompted Shire of
Dardanup Chief Bushfire Control Officer Chris Hynes to take
the unusual move of placing a ban on burn permits during the
usual annual Restricted Burn period from November 1 to
December 13, 2015.
From December 14 the Shire enters a period of Prohibited
Burn until approximately March 15, 2016.

Preparing a Bushfire Survival Plan
If you live in or near bushland, you are at risk from a bushfire
and developing a bushfire survival plan is critical.
Being prepared for a bushfire can help save you and your
family’s lives, your property and your livelihood.
When developing your plan decide together if you will leave
for a safer place, which may be to relocate to family or
friends, or stay to actively defend your home.
Make sure you write everything down.
If you live alone consider creating a plan with a neighbour or
friend.
Everybody should have their own tasks and have a list of
actions to take if there is a bushfire.
Keep your bushfire survival plan in an easy to find place and
make sure everyone knows where it is.
Checklists and templates to assist in preparing your Bushfire
Survival Plan are available on the website below.
For further information on how to prepare for and survive the
bushfire season download a copy of Prepare. Act. Survive. or

Region
Editors note; The following plan has been made available to
our readers by a local who lives on a rural property. This plan
outlines what this family will do when they have decided to
stay and defend and gives you an idea of the preparation
needed and most importantly all documented. As we all know
in emergencies we tend to panic and we may make the wrong
decision when under stress so why not sit down this weekend
and make a plan if you have not already done so, then you
are PREPARED.
