Incorporate the “Somerset Project” in schools across the country. How to Implement the “Somerset Project” in a High School Setting Cost Where will you get the money? Students will know how to operate an AED. Students will be familiar with signs of a heart attack, stroke, and choking victims. Heart Attack chest tightness, discomfort in one or both arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach, shortness of breath, cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness Stroke sudden numbness or weakness in face, arm, or leg especially on one side, sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding, sudden trouble seeing, sudden trouble walking, dizziness or loss of balance or coordination, or sudden bad headache. Choking knowing the universal sign of a choking victim Learning Outcomes Students will learn to… Recognize when CPR is needed. Check for responsiveness and know when to call 911. Open airway, assess breathing, and give rescue breaths (ABC’s). Be familiar with barrier devices. Check for signs of circulation if none, begin compressions (30 compressions: 2 breaths). Demonstrate rescue breathing without chest compressions (1 breath every 5 seconds). Put a victim in a recovery position (side position). Understand the steps of AED use. Recognize the signs of choking. Demonstrate the Heimlich maneuver. Develop self-confidence in what to do in case of an emergency. Students will be lectured and active learning during sessions 1 & 2. Tests, answer sheets, and surveys will be distributed at the end of class meeting 2. Students will do assessments within small groups (discussion and brainstorm).
