From the Leadership Team
Dear Concordia Village Residents:
Elsewhere in this Newsletter you will find the results of our most recent Annual Resident
Satisfaction Survey.
In it, 94% of our Resident respondents rated our overall services as Excellent–to–Good. 98%
would recommend Concordia Village to others.
We are grateful for this positive feedback from our Residents, and we do our very best to
continue achieving those results.
I extend my thanks to the Leadership Team and staff for their daily efforts that foster your
satisfaction with our Concordia Village services.
Yours truly,

Chaplain’s Corner by Hermann Dueck
Dear Residents and Fellow Employees at Concordia Village!
For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies… for the joy of human love, brother,
sister, parent, child, friends on earth and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild: Lord
of all, to thee we raise this our hymn of grateful praise.
These are lines of the well- known hymn For the beauty of the …by Sandford Pierpoint.
According to tradition Pierpoint wrote this hymn on a lovely day in late spring, inspired by the
view from a hilltop near his home in Bath, England.
This hymn came to mind as I reflected on my recent trip to Paraguay, my country of birth.
The verses above capture what my trip was about. I left for Paraguay on May 15 for a
two-week teaching assignment in the Mennonite Communities in Paraguay. I was lecturing,
conducting seminars and speaking on Mental Health, Spiritual Care and Self-care. I felt very
well received. This was a most rewarding experience for me.
Towards the end of these two weeks Renate (my wife) joined me for a vacation. We
connected with family, relatives and friends visiting and reminiscing. I met old high school
friends, fellow students from Normal School, former colleagues, etc. It was indeed a joyful
time. For a few days we travelled the eastern part of the country. A highlight was a visit to
the Iguazu Waterfalls in Brazil, close to the Paraguayan border. These waterfalls are
breathtakingly beautiful and big; spread over a huge area. The Niagara Falls would be one
section among many. Awe-inspiring beauty indeed!
After four weeks of working, visiting and going from place to place it was good to come back
to a place called home and to Concordia Village, my place of employment. It was wonderful
to be warmly welcomed back by so many of you. Thank you!
I wish each and every-one of you a blessed summer!
Love, your Chaplain, Hermann

Food Services News by Carla Mendres
We have some new team members that have joined the Food Services Department.
Please welcome Ainsworth, Danny, Jonah, Serena & Alexandra!
 New blinds were added to the windows in both dining rooms to increase the comfort
level of our residents. If you would like them raised or lowered please ask and a server will
be happy to adjust them for you.
 If you require a meal for take-out please do not take china from the dining room. We
are missing several bowls, plates, etc. Please ask a server for a disposable container. If
you have anything that belongs to the dining room in your suite kindly return them
as soon as possible. Thanks!
 Each morning we provide copies of the Winnipeg Free Press for you to enjoy over
breakfast. They are intended for everyone to enjoy so please don’t take them from the
dining room.
 At breakfast time please use the tongs provided to choose your food. It is very
important that residents refrain from using their bare hands to touch food. Using tongs
helps to prevent bacteria and viruses from being transferred from one person to the next.
When you are done using the tongs please be sure to place them back in the provided
containers. Using the provided hand sanitizer is also an effective way to guard yourself
from cold and flu germs.
 Breakfast is intended to be enjoyed in the dining room. If you prefer to take your
breakfast back to your suite, a server will be happy to package a breakfast for you
to take with you.
 We always welcome dinner guests. Please remember to write the information down in
the reservation book by noon of the day prior. It is imperative we know when you plan to
have dinner guests so that we can prepare enough food. If you have not made
reservations and would like to have guests for dinner the same day, please call the
kitchen and ask if we can accommodate your guests. If you would like to have a group of
6 or more, please book the private dining room. This can be done at the front desk.
If you have any questions with regards to nutritional needs or if you have a modified diet
and need some help making the best food choices for your individual needs, please call
Carla at 667-6479, extension 2227.

Resident Advisory Council by Glenn Nicholls
Your elected resident members on the council have given careful consideration to the results of the
resident satisfaction survey in December 2013. We have observed some very good trends, some
encouraging data in relation to percentages of responses, and some ongoing concerns. Overall, we
consider the results to be positive.
This year, we have the number of individual responses, in addition to response percentages. These
sheets are attached: The total results for all Villages, and the three individual Village results. May I
draw your attention to the following observations comparing “Prior survey results” to “ Current survey
results” with overall assessment:
A.
Meals
1. No consistency in comparing variety of meals, but…
2. In relation to quality of meals:
-The number indicating the quality of soups as poor/fair dropped from a prior 31
to a current total of 19 individuals.
-The quality of vegetables from 57 to 38
- The quality of meat from 31 to 22
- The quality of dessert from 16 to 10
3. Dining room experience is rated as poor/fair by only 3 residents
B. Spiritual Care
C. Recreation
D. Business
In all 3 areas, increased satisfaction, with some reduction in poor/fair responses.
E. Communication
There is some inconsistency in reporting here. The overall responses indicate a poor/fair 0
response to “Effort made by staff to address my concerns”, yet 7 individuals in CV II show
dissatisfaction in this area.
IN MEMORIUM:
F. Physical Surroundings
-In prior Surveys, 13 individual residents indicated they did not feel safe and secure; this year
there were 5 responses in this category.
-The attractiveness of the inside and outside surroundings responses, low ratings dropped
from 4 to 1 and 8-0 respectively.
6
Resident Advisory Council by Glenn Nicholls continued
G. General
All respondents would recommend Concordia Village to others.
So, overall a very positive response.
One 4th observation: In the future if there are 2 residents in a suite, then there should be 2 surveys
delivered to them.
If you have any comments or concerns on these responses, please feel free to contact me in CVII

All of the books donated since July 2013, have been processed and are on the
shelves. Now, we are in the process of correcting the cataloguing of non-fiction
books so they can be more easily found.
It is good having Mandy assist us in the library. Now, someone on staff has the
knowledge of what the library is all about!!!

Environment Services News by Ernie Goetz , Tammy Stolwyk and Glen Desrochers
A warm summer greeting to all our Residents and Families of Concordia
Village.
It seems to always amaze me, how mother nature looks after all its needs at the
right time. After this record setting long and cold winter we just had, I think many of
us got so discouraged that we were ready to give up on an actual nice Summer
coming our way this year.
Well, we no longer need to worry or wonder, summer is here and it is as beautiful as
always!!!!
Our new plants and trees that were planted last year have survived the bitter cold
and look beautiful. I am so amazed to see the new trees that were just planted last
year already bloom with beautiful flowers. I just cant wait to see them once they
mature into a big tree.
We as a Environment Services Team, Housekeeping and Maintenance staff would
like to welcome every new Resident to our Campus. We sincerely hope that our
services and daily presence will make you feel safe in your new home. We are
delighted you have chosen Concordia Village as your new Home and we hope that
we can meet your expectations and anticipations of your new Environment.

A quick look back at a few things that have happened in the past 2 months:

The parking lots have been swept and cleaned

The Dryer vents have all been cleaned in every suite of every Building

The air conditioners have all been cleaned on every balcony and are ready for use

Suite inspections have been conducted in every Suite of all 3 Buildings

Our Grounds has been raked, cut and fertilized

The flowers are being planted as I write my report

The windows will have been washed by the time the newsletter will be out
We completed a Spring Fire Drill for all 3 Buildings
There a few updates and subjects that I would like to report on that are very import for every Resident to
know:
Fire Life Safety and Suite Inspections:
1.
As mentioned, we just finished doing our semi-annual Fire Drill. We would like to remind every
Resident once you hear the fire alarm to make the effort to open your door and check the hallway to
make sure the Fire is not in your area. Leave the doors unlocked until the fire bells silence which is the
“all clear” sign.
2.
During the suite inspections, we took notes of any possible Fire Safety concerns and will be
giving Residents notices of what they need to correct if we found something concerning. Just as
information for all our Residents, the 3 most common Fire concerns that we found in suites are:

Window drapes are too long and hang down onto the baseboard heaters

Resident suite doors are wedged open

Many Residents use their stove tops as storage
These are all very important Fire Safety issues to avoid.
Please, lets all do our part to keep our building Fire safe!!!

3.
I notice that we still have some Residents that have floor mats right outside their door. This
again is a Fire safety hazard and a tripping hazard if someone would be in a rush to vacate their suite.
If you have a floor mat outside your suite, we ask that you please remove it.
4.
At the end of my report, I will attach the Fire/ Life Safety training sheet so that every Resident
(especially the New Residents) can read and refresh their memory on what to do in case of an actual
Fire.
Housekeeping Services:
1.
We would like to welcome a new housekeeping staff member that joined us as a casual and
weekend helper. Her name is Barbara Klassen. Please help us to make her feel welcome.
2.
I would also like to take this moment to say a very special “thank you” to Selena Hiebert for the
many years of service she has provided here at Concordia Village. Selena has decided to move on
to a new challenge and we would like to wish her the very best and much joy in her endeavors. We
are grateful that she has chosen to stay on as a casual housekeeper and that she will help us out
during vacation times.
3. It is with much joy that I welcome Tina Funk to our team as the new full-time employee for the CV
III main floor.
We still notice that we have several Residents that put out their garbage and recycling in the evenings
which defeats the purpose of our Courtesy check every morning to make sure that our Residents are
OK. We ask that you please don’t put garbage out in the evenings.
Maintenance Services:
1.
We would like to remind every Resident that we have 2 Live-in Caretakers on site that look after
our Building needs every day between 3:30 pm and 07:30 am and are here on weekends as well. If
you ever have trouble with your water/ toilet in your suite, or if you have trouble with your electricity or
your smoke alarm beeping, please feel free to call the “After Hours phone number.”
To reach the Caretakers after hours, please phone # 204-667-6479, listen to the message and then
press # 3.
For any medical emergencies or a Fire, please dial 911.
2.
After many years of service, we would like to say “Good bye and a Happy Retirement” to a very
deserving person. Neil Wiebe has looked after all the suite turnovers , locks for the buildings,
painting and shampooing and so much more since Concordia Village opened. Neil has decided to
slow down and enjoy his retirement as of July the 11th. Neil, we all “thank you” for your
compassionate care and service for all these years and wish you a very healthy and joyful
Retirement.

Security Services:
When we talk about having a Secure and Safe Building, we all have a role in making sure that our
building is exactly that: Safe and Secure!! We would like to share a few Security Reminders:
Make sure your doors and windows are locked when you leave your suite
For those that still have a vehicle, make sure you lock the doors at all times
If someone phones and says they are here to visit a family member and they are not answering, please do not open the doors for anyone unless you are absolutely sure you
know them. We all have a kind and trusting heart but that kindness and trust is exactly
what thieves take advantage of.
If you see something suspicious, please call the Caretakers or the Police to report the
incident.
Grounds and Gardens:
Our grounds are starting to look really nice. One of the projects coming soon is the new putting
green that we hope to see installed in July (weather permitting). This project will be done on
the East side of the Building between the CV II Dinning room and CV III Multi Purpose room.
We also will be doing some smaller landscaping projects on the North side where the grass has
faltered. We hope that all our Residents will find the time, the health and the energy to spend
as much time out doors as possible to truly enjoy this summer.
As the construction continues to make progress on Molson, we would like to continue to caution
all our Residents when walking or driving across Molson to be very careful and alert. It can be
very difficult at times to get onto the road.
As we say in every Newsletter, we sincerely appreciate the trust that you have given us to look after
your “Home”.
Thank you for your kind words of encouragement and appreciation, for your smiles of Love that you
so freely share with us as Staff.
I wish each and everyone a wonderful Summer filled with Joy and a generous measure of Blessings
and good Health.
Cheers,
Ernie

FIRE SAFETY PROCEDURE – RESIDENTS
-If there is a fire in your suite, leave the suite immediately, do not lock the
door. Pull the nearest ‘pull station’ and proceed to a common area. The fire
department will arrive shortly.
-If you are in your suite and you hear the fire alarm, and the fire is not in your
suite, stay there. Please unlock your door. Feel the hallway door; if it’s hot,
there is a chance the fire is nearby, do not open the door. If smoke is entering
your suite, open a window if you are able to. If opening the window makes
the smoke worse, close the window and proceed to your balcony. If possible
call 911 and inform them that you are on your balcony and need assistance.
The fire department will arrive shortly.
-If you are in a common area, such as the Garden Café, Dining Room, MPR,
etc, and the fire alarm sounds, and there is no fire in that room, stay there. If
the fire is in that area, please stay as a group and all proceed to another
common area, and wait for further instruction. The fire department will arrive
shortly.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION
-When the fire alarm sounds, the fire department is contacted immediately.
-Do not block the stairways, as fire fighters use the stairs to access all floors.
The only time residents should be in the stairwell is if there is immediate danger. The stairwell is a safe area.
-If you are in the elevator when the fire alarm sounds, please exit the elevator
at the very next stop and head to a common area, or your suite, if it is safe to
do so.
-When the fire alarm sounds, DO NOT use the elevators.
-The buildings at Concordia Village have a sprinkler system. If there is a fire,
the sprinkler will start spraying water in the area of the fire and not the entire
building.
-If you hear the fire alarm, treat it as a real fire. Please practice what you
have been instructed to. Once the bells go silent, all is clear, the danger is
over.
IN CASE OF FIRE, PLEASE CALL 911
13
