Vaudeville goes swimmingly
This year’s Vaudeville,
Under the Sea, has been another hit with a sold-out performance and three more nearly
sold-out performances. When
asked on how he came up with
the concept of the show, theatre teacher Matt Hart said, “I
basically wanted to do Vaudeville in that ‘place’ [the sea].
So I suggested [the theme sea]
to my classes. The students
then designed all elements of
a production. They presented
their show in a tri-fold presentation form. Then, I'm lucky
enough to take elements from
each presentation that I like.”
In the past, the department has had to go to extremes
of creativity in order to make
a show work. With a stage
lacking curtains and other
nearly vital equipment, they
have had to work extra hard
on the presention of shows.
Hart commented when
asked if the creativity of the
Theatre Department would
be compromised as a result
of the new facility. “It almost
makes me laugh to hear the
argument that we won’t be
as creative. It’s like saying a
house painter can do a fine
job with one color of paint.
The facility offers us so much
more to be more creative
with. It will allow us to go
further with our creativity.”
As for the pros and cons
of the new auditorium, Hart
claimed, “The list of favorites
is so long. Our sound board
is phenomenal. Literally it
is an industry-standard piece
of equipment. The full-fly
system is an amazing tool as
well. We’re very lucky. There
is not a least favorite on my
list. Really, it’s all just about
the time we have to learn and
work with it all. Like most
other people, I just wish there
were more hours in the day.”
Kristin Brokaw, a former
student and member of the
Gibson Southern Theatre Department, openly displayed
her envy of the new facility. Prior to a Friday night
rehearsal, she told this year’s
participants, “I wish I could be
on that stage one more time.
You don’t know how lucky
you guys are”. Other alumni
of the department, including
Joe Gilpatrick and Michael
Frohbieter, came back to reminisce and share their opinions on the facility and show.
The Theatre Department will also be performing
a new play entitled Almost,
Maine and written by John
Cariani. The play is a series
of short scenes about love,
friendship, and the consequences of both happening
simultaneously in time, but
shown one after the other.
The show that will be
prepared for ITS Regionals
has already been cast, but the
show that will be performed
here at Gibson Southern will
be cast soon. Both cast and
crew will be chosen only from
Hart’s theatre arts and technical theatre classes.
Performances will be in December.
