Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage, Stellenbosch 2012 Kanonkop is the leading producer of South Africa's very own pinotage grape, a crossing of cinsault and pinot noir. Kanonkop means ‘Cannon Hill’ and originates from the days when cannons were fired to signal the arrival of Dutch trade ships into Cape Town harbour. This estate is probably the most famous producer of pinotage internationally and was one of the first ever estates to even grow the grape. Incumbent winemaker, Abrie Beeslaar won the esteemed title of IWSC International Winemaker of the Year award in 2008, having taken over from legendary predecessor and so-called ‘king of pinotage’, Beyers Truter. Kanonkop is renowned for its red varietals, and chooses to specialise in only a few wines. Apart from its famous pinotage, the other grapes grown here are cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc which go into its very approachable Cape Blend, and the best into its iconic cabernets and Paul Sauer bottlings. These tend to be big, robust wines which go superbly well with red meat and spicy dishes. Registered as : The International Exhibition Co-operative Wine Society Limited. Producer : Mullineux Family Wines Started only in 2007, after success at Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards, Mullineux Family Wines has quickly established itself as one of the most dynamic producers in the Cape's thoroughly dynamic wine scene. Chris and Andrea Mullineux are both qualified oenologists, and are passionate about the land and their vineyards, sharing all that goes into their award-winning range of wines. These wines earned them the accolade of Winery of the Year in the influential Platter's guide 2014, which describes them thus: ‘To think it nearly didn't happen. He on a path to accounting, she reaching for the stars as an aspirant astronaut. But good fortune (theirs and ours) set them on converging courses in wine, and today Chris and Andrea Mullineux are partners in life and in a Swartland boutique venture whose modest quantities completely belie their stellar quality. This edition's haul of four maximum ratings gives them an astonishing 11 five stars to date, and places them firmly in the league of the greatest modern-era wineries. This in just seven years of operation.’ They have since, towards the end of 2013, entered a new chapter, selling a stake in the winery to Indian businessman Analjit Singh. The small winery is in the heart of Riebeek-Kasteel and the grapes all come from the Swartland, mostly found around the shale and schist based Riebeek-Kasteel Mountain, as well as the granite-based Paardeberg Mountain. The Mediterranean grapes varieties planted (syrah, chenin blanc, viognier and clairette) are ideally suited to the climate here. In the winery, the team uses small open-top wooden and cement fermenters and all of the wines spend time in oak of varying ages, and the overall aim is always to capture the truest expression of Swartland. Indeed the Mullineuxs were co-founders of the successful Swartland Revolution and leaders in the initiative to raise Swartland's profile abroad, which includes a thus far voluntary agreement to bottle all WO Swartland wines in Swartland. They were one of the 15 original members of PIWOSA (Premium Independent Wineries of South Africa), and Andrea is a member of the prestigious Cape Winemakers Guild. Now leading viticulturist Rosa Kruger advises them, particularly in her field of unrivalled expertise: old vines. They are also involved in a new project Devil's Peak Brewery and still visit California regularly. ‘We feel proud to be part of that generation where there are no boundaries and the sky is the limit,’ says Andrea. The winemaker is Fabien Reboul with the looks and physique of a rock musician. Over the years his style of winemaking has changed from big, heavy wines to wines that have more freshness. 'I simply got tired of my own wines,' he used to say. The first wine to change was the white made from marsanne and roussanne grapes. The grapes are still picked perfectly ripe and yields remain low. Indeed his vineyards on poor soil couldn't produce much more. The real difference is in the winemaking. Only stainless steel tanks are used with little in the way of intervention. Bottling is early to preserve fruit flavours. Registered as : The International Exhibition Co-operative Wine Society Limited. He made the smart move of paying attention to French traditions and buying plots of older vines planted in the early to mid 20th century, which had been planted at the optimum lower density of 6,000-7,000 vines per hectare. His vineyards planted in the commune of Vistalba at about 1100m altitude - interspersed with olive trees - are some of the highest in the city of Mendoza. Hervé and his team at Temporada use drip irrigation to ensure the vines get an adequate water supply during the hot, dry weather. In the past irrigation has caused vines to be superficially rooted because the systems were only hydrating the surface of the land; now they are buried around 60cm beneath the soil so the water penetrates deeper. Hervé buys in some fruit and uses younger vines for his everyday wine production, but his oldest vines - malbec, planted in 1908 - are used to make his wonderful Grand Vin. In all cases, grapes are sorted both before and after destemming to ensure that only the best fruit is selected. After that, there is minimal technological intervention in the winery: grapes are fermented using natural yeasts, with extended skin maceration for extra colour and structure. This technique allows the quality of the raw material to shine through in his consistently excellent wines. Registered as : The International Exhibition Co-operative Wine Society Limited. Producer : Domaine Sainte Eulalie Château Sainte Eulalie is an outstanding estate run by a young and enthusiastic couple, Laurent and Isabelle Coustal. The domaine was first established in the earlier part of the 20th century, but it has been since this dynamic pair took over in 1996 that it has gained its excellent status. The property is known as a campagne – meaning that the vineyards, winery, main house, workers’ lodgings, and cellar are all located on one site – and Isabelle and Laurent have worked hard to revitalise the entire complex. Sainte Eulalie lies in the heart of the Minervois appellation in the south of France, just above the tiny village of La Livinière. The vineyards are spread over the Aude Valley, on the south side of the Black Mountain and Massif Central and not far from the Canal du Midi. This area isn’t just an idyllic, laid-back sun-trap, it’s also brilliant for vines: Eulalie’s terraced vineyards lie on south-facing slopes at between 200-250m altitude, where they are protected from the northern winds. The 34 hectares of vines – planted on pebbly soils with a high proportion of chalk, clay and manganese – are mostly over 20 years old, with the exception of two hectares of syrah planted by the Coustals in 2000. The balance of vines comprises 36% syrah, 28% grenache noir, 27% carignan and 9% cinsault. Machine harvesting is responsible for most of the picking, but once the grapes reach the winery they are sorted by hand to ensure only the best fruit is used. Grapes then undergo fermentation and are aged in a mixture of vessels. The everyday Minervois spends 15-18 months in traditional concrete tanks, whereas the premium bottling, Cuvée Cantilène, which comes from old vines and contains more syrah, ages for a year in barrels, 25-50% of which are new oak, depending on vintage conditions. The rosé is much fresher, containing more grapes from the younger syrah vines, and is designed for younger drinking with fresh summer fare. Producer : Bleasdale Vineyards The historic Bleasdale vineyards were founded in 1850 by Frank Potts, who arrived in South Australia from Portsmouth, England in 1836. Potts spotted the potential of the rich alluvial soils of the area and the impact of the Bremer River on which the isolated, tiny town of Langhorne Creek region depends for flood irrigation. His sons and grandsons operated and built up the winery, and even today the fourth and fifth generation of the Potts family are still involved in the winemaking and running of the winery. Their property, much of which enjoys conservation status, offers a fascinating insight into the history of Australia’s early settlers. The cellars at Bleasdale are a national monument, constructed from red gumwood and limestone, and some of the original winemaking equipment is still occasionally used. Nevertheless, the emphasis here is on using modern technology to produce wines of consistently high quality. Until the 1990s much of the region’s fruit went into multiregional blends and it was only when a group of long-term family growers – including Bleasdale – started promoting 100% Langhorne Creek wines that the region became recognised in its own right. We are proud that The Society’s Spicy Australian Red, a robust and generous blend, true to the Bleasdale spirit, originates from these family vineyards.
